These images illustrate the wonders of the Exposition including views of the Sunken Gardens European Forestry & California Buildings Agriculture Machinery & Mines Buildings the view of the Exposition lit up at night and more. Fred H. Kiser was an accomplished mountaineer and promoter who was one of the most successful and widely known landscape and commercial photographers in the American West during the opening decades of the 20th century. He and his brother Oscar operated the Lewis & Clark Official Photographic Company at the Exposition which gave them their start and he became well known for his images of National Parks and the picturesque Columbia River Gorge. The exhibition with its 16000 items on display made the public aware of the fabulous wealth of pictures by old masters and objects of art of every kind hidden away in English country houses and at the same time it opened up a new period of art-historical studies. The preface is at pains to extol the education value of the exhibition and to make known to the people of England the art-wealth of their own country and by inducing a greater familiarity with the beautiful to increase and extend its refining influence.</p><p>gThe Art-Treasures Examinerg contains a series of articles probably under the editorship of the journalist William Blanchard Jerrold who contributed articles on various subjects. An original pen and ink drawing showing Sir Edgar Boehm's 1834 - 1890 statue 'Young Bull and Herdsman' on a large plinth at the foot of the grand staircase at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition of 1888. <br /> <br /> A stylishly-dressed Victorian crowd of exhibition viewers strolls about the great hall with the statue on a large plinth highlighted with white accents. With the title penned below the image. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm 1834 - 1890 is recognized for his colossal statues including one of Queen Victoria executed in marble 1869 for Windsor Castle the monument of the duke of Kent in St. George's Chapel the statue of Carlyle on the Thames embankment at Chelsea and the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner. Boehm is also listed as a British exhibitor in the Reports of the United States Commissioners to the Centennial International Exhibition at Melbourne 1888 p111.<br /> <br /> The Young Bull and Herdsman was acquired by the Melbourne Art Gallery and Museum and was then gifted to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria where it is today outside the RASV offices in the show grounds.<br /> <br /> Unsigned with a small circular mark roughly at center of drawing and a closed tear through the caption but not affecting the drawing; mounted on an album page. 9 3/4 x 8 1/2" unknown‎

Reverse a little soiled minor wear folds a very good copy. This guide map of the 5th Domestic Promotion Exposition depicts the layout of the exposition grounds and provides detailed information about the various pavilions. The exposition was held at the site where Tennoji Park now stands. Over 5 million people visited the event between March and July 1903. <br><br>The map highlights agricultural and industrial pavilions along with a pavilion showcasing a refrigeration machine. The Taiwan pavilion features produce from the recently acquired territory. Displays of local produce and numerous food stalls offered entertainment and refreshments for visitors. First edition possible first state including the colour plate & extra-illustrated title & frontispiece which are not present in some printings of this lavishly illustrated catalogue of America’s first exposition inspired and patterned after the 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition in London. Mixed in with the familiar Arts & Crafts material which filled the early expositions including industrially produced glassware metalwork ceramics and more the 1853-54 Exposition served as a vital presentation of American invention and technology including Royal Earl House’s innovative printing telegraph with its piano-style keyboard a Henry Fitz refractor telescope John Whipple’s daguerreotypes shot of the Moon at Harvard College and even a publicity stunt featuring Elias Otis demonstrating his safety elevator by dramatically cutting the rope holding the cage preventing is descent when they deployed. The 1853-54 Exhibition was also vital to the development of iron construction in America including the striking octagonally planned domed structure by Castensen and Gildermeister as well as plans submitted by Paxton Downing & Vaux Bogardus and Hoppin all illustrated here. After the fair closed in November 1854 the New York Crystal Palace sporadically held tradefairs until 1858 when the iron and glass building burned to the ground in less than 30 minutes. ‎Portland OR & Seattle WA: Smith 1959. Ten RPPC silver gelatin photographs all w/ description and inventory number w/in negative at lower fore-edge slight age toning very slight edgewear still VG. A nice set of 10 souvenir RPPC’s shot during the 100 day run of the Oregon Centennial Exposition. The 1859-1959 Centennial Exposition lasted from June 10 to Sept. 17 on 65 acres along the Columbia River formerly Vanport wiped away in the tragic 1948 flood and also featured a Gayway Amusement Park Garden of Tomorrow & Adventureland. The Exposition featured everything from Mossman’s Can-Can girl revue to steam locomotives Modernist sculptures and murals by Louis Bunce and other Oregon artists and the striking Hall of Religious History in the Garden of Tomorrow which featured murals of Carl Morris. This re-created town from the 1870’s Old West featured the Golden Nugget dance hall & saloon as well as livery stable church post office and hotel and proved to be the most successful attraction. The Oregon Centennial only attracted about 1.5 million visitors and largely operated at a loss which encouraged the nascent Seattle World’s Fair organizers to strip out their Western theme and focus instead on their later very successful Century 21 futurism theme. ‎A very scarce set of original albumen souvenir photos shot at the 1901 Pan-American World’s Fair in Buffalo New York. These “unofficial†photos capture the Midway the US Government Building the Electric Tower the Fine Arts Building the Temple of Music and night shots of the Exposition lit with electric light.‎

‎Buffalo NY & Chicago IL: Mackson; Lyman 1901. Archive of 46 original albumen photographs sized from 3 x 6 in. up to 4 x 6 in. all of the images smaller than 4 x 5 in. on albumen paper stock many w/ embossed photographer’s stamps several w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative some w/ small rubber stamp at lower fore-edge of verso as well as pencil manuscript annotations identifying subject inventory nos. w/ in negatives of several a few w/ evidence of having been previously mounted a couple w/very slight dog-eared corners 1 w/ closed tear at lower fore-edge a couple w/ image evidencing poor process chemicals still an exceptional group of images. This set of photographs was created by two different Illinois & Missouri photographers at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY -- both of whom had lived and worked in Chicago at the beginning of the 1890’s offering reasonably priced “unofficial†vernacular images of the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair followed by the Pan-American World’s Fair. The fair featured a range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals “A Trip to the Moon†“Cleopatra’s Temple†Henry Roltair’s illusionist show “House upside down†and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. It is sadly largely remembered as the scene of the tragic assassination of President McKinley. Vernacular souvenir photos are quite scarce and these have an unusual sharpness in light of the fact that like the 1893 Columbian all were prevented from bringing in tripods to shoot the Exposition. One of the photographs captures African natives from the Midway’s “African Village†which incorporated Africans from the colonial empires of Great Britain Belgium Germany & France along with participants from Georgia who were “staged†in the “Old Plantation†representing the enslavement of African-Americans in North America. Another Black History exhibit included was the “Negro Exhibit†previously exhibited at the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris depicting the accomplishments of formerly enslaved people and languished at the far back of the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Samuel Lyman 1854-1939 was an intrepid tinkerer junk dealer and photographer who shot souvenir photos for his customers during the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two of his sons Joseph Lyman 1887-1953 and Harry Lyman 1883-1940 became successful photographers in Kansas City MO during the Roaring 20’s. Mackson fl. 1885-1910 immigrated from Russia into Chicago in the 1880’s and operated a small photo studio there until about 1900 before relocating to Kansas City and St. Louis MO during the opening decade of the 20th Century operating photography studios in both cities. Included are descriptions of the range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals Akoun’s Beautiful Orient Venice in America with Italian Gondoliers Roltair’s House Upside Down or “Palace of Illusions†the “War Dance of Cape Lopez Blacks†the Philippine Village the Hawaiian Village which featured a representation of the Kilauea Volcano ever erupting and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Augmenting the City of Buffalo map is a directory to all of the streets and cross streets and hotels restaurants and other services also receive mention. Sadly the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo New York is best remembered today as the site of President McKinley’s assassination Sept. 6 1901. This guide book was released with issues containing just one plan to the exposition as well as this version which featured the City of Buffalo map as well. ‎Souvenir pamphlet 8vo colored printed pictorial wrappers illustrated 16 pp. Folded and creased down the middle with a little wear at the fold some minor rubbing to wrappers normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a scarce piece of ephemera commemorating the 1911 groundbreaking ceremony by President William H. Taft for the exhibition in the Golden Gate Park. While the purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal it seemed to function more as a worlds fair held in San Francisco. It took over three years to construct and the exhibition ran from February through December 1915. There are a number of black and white photographs in the booklet including a double page panoramic view of the city of San Francisco. Of particular interest is the opening photo featuring Clyde Osborn’s Electriquette which were electric-powered cards that 1916 visitors used to travel around the park with rides costing a $1 apiece and battery life of 8 hours. Adolph Wittemann and his brother Herman began working as printers in New York in 1867 and first started printing books and postcards under the Albertype name in 1887.
