‎A propos de l’Exposition Universelle de 1855 (la première exposition française). C’est quelques jours avant l’inauguration de cet évènement que le peintre adresse cette lettre à Bartholony. Il considère que son ouvrage est « mal placé ». A cet effet, il a adressé une réclamation à l’administration. A cela, il espère une meilleure place pour son tableau et il a « bien besoin d’un appui ». Il demande à Bartholony de l’aider et le soutenir dans sa démarche « Je viens vous demander le vôtre sachant combien vous avez de bienveillance pour les artistes, et que par vos relations, vous pourriez mettre dans mon intérêt et appeler pour moi, l’attention de l’un des plus éminents personnages de la commission Impériale de l’exposition. Je pense que si ma réclamation est accueillie avec bienveillance il sera facile d’y faire droit. Je vous serais bien reconnaissant, Monsieur de m’accorder votre protection dans cette circonstance si importante pour moi».‎

Lorsque s’ouvrit en 1855 l’Exposition universelle des beaux-arts, c’est à lui que fut con fiée la tâche de juger toutes les écoles contemporaines dont les principales productions se trouvaient réunies pour la première fois dans une seule enceinte. Dans les quelques lignes qu’il écrivit en tête de cette longue et périlleuse revue de l’art contemporain, il a lui-même indiqué avec une grande modestie qu’il comprenait mieux que per sonne la responsabilité qu’il acceptait.
