Original Third Reich-era artwork caricaturing various Nazi organizations
NP: NP 1938. Original artwork. Loose_leaf. g to vg. Quarto 10 3/8 x 8". Loose cardstock leaf.<br /> <br /> Original pre-WWII ink and watercolor artwork caricaturing seven major Nazi organizations. Although the signature of the German artist couldn't be deciphered the style is strikingly similar to the one of Albert Hohenester.<br /> <br /> The artwork depicts an impressive and rather frightful SS officer framed by a member of each of the following Nazi organizations:<br /> <br /> On the left side from top to bottom features a member of the Jungvolk 1 of the BDM 2 and of the HJ 3.<br /> <br /> On the right side from bottom to top features a member of the SA 4 of the Frauenschaft 5 and of the PO 6.<br /> <br /> The six half portraits measure from 2 to 3". Each one has rosy cheeks and is looking towards the SS officer 7 who is dressed in his full black uniform. He is seen posing with a certain martial authority: his bare right hand holding his belt buckle while his white gloved left hand holds the other glove. On his left arm features a Swastika armband. The officer's facial expression is severe and this harshness is highlighted by the fact that his right eye is closed his left eye is hidden behind a monocle his complexion is grey and has thin sullen lips. <br /> <br /> The SS officer is depicted in full 9 x 3 1/4" and is featured at center.<br /> <br /> Each of the seven characters is hand-captioned in pencil. The artist's signature in pencil features at lower left margin.<br /> <br /> Moderate and sporadic creasing closed tears and age-toning to upper margin and right fore-edge. Folding mark at center. Captions in German. Leaf in overall good artwork in very good condition. 1 The Deutsches Jungvolk German Youth was a youth organization in Nazi Germany for boys aged 10 to 14 and was a section of the Hitler Youth movement. Through a programme of outdoor activities parades and sports it aimed to indoctrinate its young members in the tenets of Nazi ideology. Membership became fully compulsory for eligible boys in 1939. By the end of World War II some had become child soldiers. <br /> <br /> 2 The Bund Deutscher Mädel abbreviated BDM League of German Girls or Band of German Maidens was the girls' wing of the Nazi Party youth movement the Hitler Youth. It was the only female youth organization in Nazi Germany. <br /> <br /> 3 The Hitlerjugend often abbreviated as HJ Hitler Youth was the youth organization of the Nazi Party in Germany. Its origins dated back to 1922. From 1933 until 1945 it was the sole official youth organization in the Third Reich and was partially a paramilitary organization; it was constituted of the Hitlerjugend proper for male youth aged 14 to 18 the Deutsches Jungvolk German Youth for younger boys and the BDM League of German Girls. <br /> <br /> 4 The Sturmabteilung abbreviated as SA literally Storm Department functioned as the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party NSDAP. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Their primary purposes were providing protection for Nazi rallies and assemblies disrupting the meetings of opposing parties fighting against the paramilitary units of the opposing parties especially the Communist Party of Germany KPD and intimidating Slavic and Romani citizens unionists and Jews – for instance during the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses. <br /> <br /> 5 The Nationalsozialistische Frauenschaft abbreviated NS-Frauenschaft National Socialist Women's League was the women's wing of the Nazi Party. It was founded in October 1931 as a fusion of several nationalist and National Socialist women's associations. The Frauenschaft was subordinated to the national party leadership Reichsleitung; girls and young women were the purview of the Bund Deutscher Mädel BDM. <br /> <br /> 6 A member of the Politische Organisation abbreviated as PO Political Organization an association concerned with administering the territorial cadres notably those of the deputy Fuehrer the party treasurer the Reich organizational leader and the intraparty judiciary system. <br /> <br /> 7 The Schutzstaffel SS; literally "Protection Squadron" was a major paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers' Party NSDAP; Nazi Party in Nazi Germany. It began with a small guard unit known as the Saal-Schutz Hall-Protection made up of NSDAP volunteers to provide security for party meetings in Munich. In 1925 Heinrich Himmler joined the unit which had by then been reformed and given its final name. Under his direction 1929-45 it grew from a small paramilitary formation to one of the most powerful organizations in Nazi Germany. From 1929 until the regime's collapse in 1945 the SS was the foremost agency of surveillance and terror within Germany and German-occupied Europe. NP unknown

The project was a collaborative effort between Trecalli the Italian Cultural Institute in Edinburgh the Smith Art Gallery and Museum in Stirling and several Scottish academics. The story is one in which the male lead William Boyd is cast aside by his girlfriend and resolves that he could find a more suitable lover off the street which he does when he connects with a singer at a sleazy bar played by Lupe Velez. Boyd a popular Silent Era romantic lead would suffer a setback in the early sound era but resurrect his career and fortune in a series of Westerns in which he played Hopalong Cassidy. Some photos have touches of tinting although they are from full color. And much of the ornamental decoration on the page is in color. One could say that the souvenir expressed something of the ambition of the film-makers but the constraints of early sound severely constrained what they could have done otherwise temporarily reversing some of the breakthroughs in terms of movement and artistry achieved in the Silents made just a year or two earlier. Condition: edgewear tothe cover with slight loss of the paper pastedown upper front corner. A few leaves have a small corner dampstain which is only really conspicuous on one leaf and a relatively trivial issue even on that leaf. Otherwise clean and bright. And we will also note the color on the pastedown paper is very bright as well which often not the case with this publication. The Longacre Press, Inc hardcover

Archive of London Artist, Norman Walker James, Featuring a Notable Project Undertaken for Belgian Royalty, a Historic Emblem of the Kingsbury Parade of Shops in London.
Archive of London Artist, featuring a tribute to king of Belgium; comprises 5 published book dustjackets for notable authors, 2 bookplate designs, 11 heraldic arms of the British monarchy and the Royal Armed Forces, 30 hand-drawn and coloured Oxford coat of arms, 21 unique greeting cards, 7 photographs, and a few other items pertaining to publications and to colleges. Artworks and photographs range in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 11 cm and the largest measuring 20 x 25 cm. With the exception of the greeting cards and bookplates, all other works are mounted to large cardstock leafs measuring approximately 29 x 35 cm. Two series of works are accompanied by typescript descriptions; one is accompanied by a facsimile letter from the College of Arms in London. The lot in very good condition, providing insight into the works of an all but forgotten London-based commercial artist who was active before and during the Second World War. Norman Walker James (1886-1963) was a commercial artist and designer established in London from about 1910-1911. He is listed as a Decorative Designer residing at a boarding house in Kensington, in the 1911 census. Although little-known today, he evidently rose to some acclaim in his trade, as he was selected to design a memorial tablet for Belgian King Albert I. Born in Leicester, he was the son of a congregational minister. The present archive consists of an artist's own retained copies of his work, which form a fascinating portfolio of a man who was notable and active, not long ago from the 1920s into at least the 1940s, and yet seems to be vanished into obscurity. His undertakings and contracts connected him to Belgian royalty, notable publishers, and administrators of renowned college institutions. Especially interesting are the items pertaining to his contribution to a memorial located in the Sint-Maartenskathedraal in Ypres [St Martin's Cathedral re-built in 1930] , including a photograph of the tablet designed by James and accompanied by his design description, two coats of arms printed true-to-size as they would be on the tablet, as well as two rare large press photographs of its unveiling on 21 May 1938. The tablet served to honour Albert I King of Belgium together with the British Armed Forces for the gift of the exquisite rose stained glass window mounted above the south transept door. James designed the nine-foot tall tablet, on which he hand painted the inscription, and which was unveiled by King Leopold III. It featured the coat of arms of Albert I, as well as the Arms of the British Army, the RAF and the Dragoon Guards. Some of James' dustjacket designs retained here include: Commodore Anson's Voyage Into the South Seas and Around the World, by Boyle T. Somerville, published in 1934; The Recollections of Sir Henry Dickens, published in 1934; The Daughters of George III, by Dorothy Margaret Stuart, published in 1939; War & Peace, by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1942 (Also with original book boards); The Heart of Jade, by Salvador de Madariaga, published in 1944. Other book and publishing related designs include: Four photographs showing the dedication leafs and front boards of a book issued by Great Britain's Postal Administration to commemorate the tricentennial anniversary of Norway's postal service and to celebrate the two nations' collaboration in a Universal Postal Union; A front wrapper for a 1934 issue of "Paris Salon Illustrated" magazine for artists. On two leafs are mounted 30 hand coloured drawings of heraldic shields, being the Arms of the University of Oxford, and twenty-nine of its colleges or halls, some examples of which include Pembroke College, St. John's College, Jesus College, Queens College, Magdalen College, and Campion Hall. A ticket of R. P. Gossop Limited stamped "Norman James" reveals a connection to the agency. [Reginald Percy Gossop (1876-1951) was a commercial artist specializing in graphic and landscape art, and is best remembered for designing posters for the Underground Group from 1925 to 1932. This would prove very eventful as the city was a hotbed of creativity during this period with a number of acts that were sonically ahead of everywhere else even New York and London. Berkeley: Kelly's Cove Press 2012. Paperback. 126p. numerous illustrations most of these by RD see color vignettes w/ notes on terminal leaves plates are b&w but tinted where called for. Softbound first edition in 9x6 inch decorated wraps. Item provides some of the excellences of "fine press" but does not mention any limitation in its colophon. Bound in preceeding the half-title is a color-enhanced invitation to a 2012 release party this narrow insert inscribed by Lentine "for Robin". Find a lengthy further inscription to designer Robin on the titlepage opposite a frontis plate of a guy in jockey shorts all other pix of women. Covers appear to be slightly sunned without damage to graphics. A very good copy bearing only faint signs of handling. "A book like no other" runs Doty's intro; Lentine painstakingly recounts the experience of doing each drawing and what the model might have been going through as she or he was drawn. Diebenkorn's pencil-work is terrific; these may all have been done as two-minute poses and are very fluid. Kelly's Cove Press paperback

Uniformly toned at edges; gently worn; minor tears. <br/><br/>Book commences with the popular Italian tale "Fagiolino" by Elisa Amati translated by Alan C. Dunn. Containing 26 clipped illustration pasted to leaves and hand-colored pen and ink drawings depicting characters from the story. After which book includes typed poems by William Blake William Shakespeare Walter de la Mare Carl Sandburg; and other original works by the poet are clipped and pasted-in. An original hand-drawn paper doll with original hats and clothes are secured by decorative pockets. A charming "book of favorites" and a sophisticated compilation; sketches and poems collaged into this album offer a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a young artist and poet. hardcover books

Italy perhaps Sicily c. 1921. Paperback. Very Good. Student's notebook "Quaderno le Regioni d'Italia" with illustrated wraps and a full-color images of Palermo mounted to front cover; 156 x 210 mm; approx. pp. 50 lined paper nearly full with handwritten text in English and Italian and original illustrations in pencil and ink some of them colored. A charming volume it includes the story of Pinocchio handwritten in black ink and with nicely accomplished illustrations in black ink or pencil and an original story "Spettacolo di Gala" handwritten in black ink in a different hand and illustrated perhaps by a child in colored pencil. "Spettacolo" is about circuses primarily clowns. Both stories are translated into English on the facing page or below handwritten in blue ink -- some flaws in the translation suggest that this may be the work of Italian students of English. <br/><br/> paperback books

Very Good. Album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits on laid paper after illustrations to Aliprando Capriolo's 1596 Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri. Approximately 185 x 143 mm each tipped to larger sheets of wove paper. Small folio Italy: n.d. ca 18th century. Cased in full 18th-century Italian Neapolitan brown calf over pasteboard tooled in gold all-over covers with two outer border rolls surrounding three double-ruled panels filled with rolls and solid tools decorated with silver paint now mostly oxidized inner panel with tulip tools at corner surrounding cartouche of gouges with center lozenge of floral tools spine with raised bands in seven compartments with cherub tool rebacked preserving original spine later endpapers and edge gilding. For binding cf. BL c154g12/Davis 859; BL c27e18; Davis III 380. <br/><br/>An 18th-century Italian album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits based on Aliprando Capriolo's Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri 1596. These copies were probably made from Pompillio Tottis edition of Capriolo Ritratti et Elogil di Capitani Illustri 1636. Totti altered Capriolos engravings adding the coats of arms seen in many of the portraits here. Portraits include Tamerlane Gattamelata Roberto Sanseverino and the condottieri Vitelli brothers. The binding is in a style common to the Salvioni workshop. Davis Gift III 380 which Foot suggests was bound in an unknown Neapolitan workshop shows the same wide outer roll on the covers. hardcover books

Isle of Man 1960. Small quarto 18 x 23.5 cm. 90 pages; unpaginated. Forty-five pen and ink drawings some hand-colored on rectos only. Images are labeled on the pages with additional caption text on cards 6 x 19 cm. laid-in. An ownership label on the front paste-down states "Miss L.S. Garrad Rose Cottage Cronk Road Union Mills Isle of Man". Molluscs pictured include in common names the artist has employed Latin names throughout: mussels clams periwinkles snails scallops oysters and more. Larch S. Garrad 1936-2005 was Assistant Keeper at the Manx Museum on the Isle of Man and author of "The Naturalist in the Isle of Man" "Industrial Archaeology of the Isle of Man" and "A History of Manx Gardens." She was also the author of The Non-marine Molluscs of the Isle of Man published in three parts 1968 1972 1973 the first survey of Manx molluscs since Forbes' Malacologia Momensis 1838. We have not determined if these drawings were used in any of Garrard's illustrations or if the molluscs depicted were specific to the Isle of Man or more generally to Britain. Handwritten and Illustrated Family History
Worsthorne Lancashire c. 1950. Hardcover. Fine. Black white red and gilt decorative Christmas paper over boards; 185 x 273 mm; pp. 83 handwritten in ink with more than 20 drawings and watercolors including vignettes decorative flourishes and full-page scenes. A florid orderly feminine hands records a very personal account of her childhood memories and family history composed in hindsight and lamenting "the present world. of H. Bombs Nuclear Tests Atomic Secrets Radioactivity planes hurling through the air with deafening noise. The levity of my sketch Wordsorth forgive for like you 'Have I not reason to lament what man has made of man'" She also references "peace time" making it clear that she has some familiarity with war and this is perhaps why the entire volume is a careful balancing act between a retreat to the past told cheerfully as though to a child and a more somber rumination on her present. The artwork is invariably accomplished -- ranging from lovely floral themes animals portraits of children and one of Queen Elizabeth landscapes and family houses to somewhat fantastical renderings of human forms floating in the air. She also carefully draws and colors two pictorial maps of locales she recalls from her youth and tips on 2 photographs b/w silver gelatin prints of her grandmother's shawl and bonnet and 1 photograph of a broadside advertising the auction of her uncle's John Crowther sheep and sheep dogs. John her fathers younger brother died in 1887 after being struck by lightning. The family sells his home Jacksons House in Worsthorne in 1888 and moves north leaving their convent education for the Home Farm of Ormrod House belonging to her great grandmother. Photographs were printed in Cheriton Folkestone. Locations on her maps include the River Douglas Rufford Parbold Lathom House Ormskirk Scarisbrick Hall Ainsdale Birkdale Crossens Greeves Hall and more. A Christmas Carol by Shophound or Adventures of Shophound from A to Z
1931. Paperback. Very Good. A sweet little hand-made volume illustrated in full-color throughout; about 4.5-by-6 inches 20 pages including front and rear cover alternately bound with staples or glue. This joyful ode to Christmas booty as in presents features a Schnauzer in holly and red bow bounding through an alphabet of potential gifts as though through a store. Perhaps created as a mock-up story board or even a potential magazine lay-out it begins with Shophound sitting in his Vogue office on Christmas Eve most illustrations are drawn hastily though nonetheless legible and pleasing in colored pencil with two tipped-on illustrations cut from an unidentified source likely a Tiffany's catalogue. A little finger-smudged with graphite and with faint editorial notes in the margins buttressing the possibility that this is an early draft of a larger project. <br/><br/> paperback books

Mottled cloth over boards approx. 16-by-12 inches; contains 5 original pencil drawings the first a taxonomy of 11 tress then 4 landscapes average size about 11-by-8 inches with handwritten labels in the wide margins in blue ink in French. Artist's name pencilled lightly in the images appears to be "A. Borrel." Scuffing along spine and edges of boards. Drawings are lovely and accomplished rich in texture and tone with intricate details and white highlights -- features a castle cottage lake and train station with small human figures in the wide landscape.
