‎London, Alan Cristea Gallery, 1995. Softcover. Black & blue pictorial wraps, French flaps, [24 pp.], 5 color plates tipped in, 4 BW illus. Issued in conjunction with a 1995 exhibition of this series of four prints by British painter and printmaker Sir Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin (b. 1932). With an essay by Craig Hartley, which begins: "Howard Hodgkin's four Venetian Views show the same view of Venice at different times of day. Each is so distinctly different from the others that it is difficult, at first sight, to beleive that all four were printed from the same set of five printing plates. The printed colours, and the hand-colouring applied directly to the paper, vary from one view to another. But a close examination of the way the prints were made reveals a bold and subtle interplay between the four views that goes far deeper than a mere cosmetic change of hue." Includes the tipped in full-color plates, a chronology, and an exhibitions history. Nice!. VG- (Ex-art library with label and few marks, otherwise crisp and clean.) .‎

‎Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin's Transcendence‎

‎Laguna Beach CA: Laguna Art Museum in association with Gingko Press, (c.2007). First Edition. Softcover. [the faintest bit of external handling wear, still presents as like new]. Trade PB (color and B&W illustrations, photos, etc.) Large-format softcover catalog, produced in conjunction with an exhibition of the work of Griffin, "one of three or four quintessential American designers of the late 1960s, [whose] marriage of comics, surrealism, art nouveau, and symbolism into a decided visual language of sex, drugs, and rock and roll helped define an era that, contrary to revisionist theory, was the most unique of the late twentieth century." (from a cover blurb by Steven Heller). Born in Southern California, Griffin spent four years in San Francisco (1966-1970), where he became "one of a handful of artists internationally that changed the face of graphic design by initiating the psychedelic art movement," creating (among other works) some of the best-known rock concert posters of the day (for the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, and others), as well as being "at the forefront of the underground comix movement as one of the creators of Zap Comix." Following his move back to Southern California in 1970, he became a born-again Christian, and much of his later art "recast traditional biblical iconography and made it relevant to the time." He died in 1991 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident; this was the first book to examine the impact of his work on American culture. Includes contributions by Greg Escalante, Jacaeber Kastor, Chuck Fromm, Chaz Bojorquez, and Gordon McClelland.. Near Fine .‎
