GUN CRAZY DEADLY IS THE FEMALE 1949 Half sheet poster style A
United Artists. No binding. Just About Fine. Vintage original 22 x 28" 56 x 72 cm half sheet poster style A. Backed with conservation paper a tiny amount of conservation in white background above the word "VIOLENCE" overall just about fine or even slightly better. The film was very quickly retitled as Gun Crazy during its initial release. Hence any Deadly is the Female posters are unusually scarce because they were so quickly discarded in favor of the retitled posters all of which had entirely different artwork. Distributor United Artists created two entirely different half sheets for this film labeled styles A and B. This poster is the style A version. This poster is extremely scarce -- Heritage auctioned the B style only twice once in 2004 for $920 and once in 2007 for $717 and that last sale was nineteen years ago. Furthermore Heritage has never auctioned any example of this style A. United Artists unknown

In the Heat of the Night is a classic mystery drama film directed by Norman Jewison produced by Walter Mirisch and starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. It tells the story of Virgil Tibbs Poitier a Black police detective from Philadelphia who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation in a small town in Mississippi. The film was adapted by Stirling Silliphant from John Ball's 1965 novel of the same name. At the 40th Academy Awards the film was nominated for seven Oscars winning five including Best Picture Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Rod Steiger. Quincy Jones' score featuring a title song performed by Ray Charles was nominated for a Grammy Award. The success of the film spawned two film sequels featuring Poitier. A particularly famous line in the film comes immediately after Gillespie mocks the name "Virgil": Gillespie: "That's a funny name for a nigger boy that comes from Philadelphia! What do they call you up there" Tibbs annoyed: "They call me Mister Tibbs!" In 2002 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally historically or aesthetically significant". Although at the time considered a propaganda film and made under the authority of the Ministry of Information as part of a series of film productions aimed at morale in the United Kingdom it is elevated by the story and production values and is now considered one of the great British films of its era. Fine. </em></p><p><em>The Man with the Golden Arm</em> was the first major Hollywood film to tackle the subject of drug addiction which was still a taboo subject for American films during the 1950s. Its release defied censorship codes of the time while its success signaled moviegoers' growing interest in serious adult film themes. As early as 1949 the source material was considered as a vehicle for John Garfield and even in 1955 censors were very hard on the content of the film.</p><p>Saul Bass designed the crooked arm symbol used in the film's advertising campaign which director Otto Preminger liked so much that he threatened to pull the picture if an exhibitor changed the advertisements. Ranked at number 14 of the 25 best poster designs of all time here is Bass' art in its purest form. Bass also created the film's animated title sequence the first of many such sequences he created for films by Preminger Alfred Hitchcock and others. The West Coast premiere as indicated on the invitation was held on Dec 26th 1955 at the Fox Beverly Theatre and was a formal affair.</p> United Artists
