br. Questo libro del noto esoterista francese Eliphas Lévi, fu pubblicato nel 1856. Fra gli scritti inediti di Eliphas Lévi, pubblicati dalla Società Teosofica, questo testo è indubbiamente il più importante, perché rivela un aspetto del suo autore completamente diverso da quello comunemente conosciuto dai suoi discepoli. Nei suoi primi fascicoli The Theosophist ha pubblicato diversi frammenti intitolati "Scritti inediti di Eliphas Lévi". Uno di questi "scritti inediti" - che però non fu stampato su The Theosophist, ma separatamente come opuscolo, nella serie "Theosophical Miscellanies" - venne commentato con note di "E.O." Eminente Occultista, e pubblicato in inglese a Calcutta nel 1883 per poi essere venne ripubblicato nel 1922, con ulteriori note a piè di pagina di "eminente occultista". Sull'identità di E.O. molto si è ipotizzato, resta comunque sconosciuta e si suppone che, per stile e opinioni, potesse essere Helena P. Blavatsky. Questo manuale è una ristampa della precedente. Successivamente tutta una serie di manoscritti inediti di Eliphas Lévi furono pubblicati su Theosophist degli anni 1884-1885, mentre le istruzioni segrete, impartite ai suoi più intimi discepoli e mai divulgate, furono stampate sul supplemento del Theosophist del gennaio 1886 dalla signora M. Gebhard, sua discepola diretta per oltre sette anni. È degno di nota il fatto che Lévi negli ultimi anni della sua vita, caduto in miseria e infermo, fu ospite per lungo tempo di Gustavo Gebhard di Elberfeld, Console di Persia, al quale egli lasciò la sua eredità letteraria. In seguito, presso la stessa famiglia Gebhard, visse lungamente pure la Blavatsky e il Col. H.S. Olcott, fondatori della Società Teosofica. La famiglia Gebhard organizzò nel 1884 la prima Loggia Teosofica in Germania, ne facevano parte tutti e cinque i componenti della famiglia. Nel libro I Sette Paradossi Magici l'Autore fa appello a un equilibrio tra scienza e religione rivolgendosi a sette affermazioni paradossali tra cui "La religione è magia sanzionata dall'autorità", "La libertà è obbedienza alla Legge" e "La ragione è Dio". Si tratta di un testo indirizzato a tutti coloro che aspirano a raggiungere la più alta conoscenza esoterica. Lo studio attento delle intuizioni contenute nel manuale è raccomandato a chi si interessa seriamente di dottrine esoteriche, poiché aprirà strade di comprensione non raggiungibili attraverso l'analisi di altri autori di libri esoterici, specialmente nella ricerca della mistica profonda della divinazione attraverso i Tarocchi, che era, per Lévi, il fondamento su cui poggiava l'edificio della "scienza suprema".
