CESI or CAESIUS Bernardo
Mineralogia sive Naturalis Philosophiae Thesauri in quibus Metallicae Concretionis medicatorúmque fossilium miracula terrarum pretium colorum & pigmentorum apparatus concretorum succorum virtus lapidum atque gemmarum dignitas continentur
Large engraved vignette on title. Title in red & black. 8 p.l. 626 69 pp. Folio cont. blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards arms on covers effaced. Lyon: J. & P. Prost 1636. First edition Schuh's issue B no stated priority with the dedication to Charles de Neufville. "Very scarce. Compendium of all the author ever discovered or read about the subject of mineralogy. It was published posthumously from notes he left by his Order at Lyon six years after his death. Printed in a double column format in a relatively small type-size the work is a vast storehouse of all things mineralogical including new ideas restatements of earlier authors observations and superstitious belief. The uncritical selection of material led Webster in his Metallographia London 1671 p. 29 to criticize the author as too digressive and as mixing tares with the wheat. Partington thinks the use of the term 'Mineralogia' in the title is the first modern usage of the word. "The work opens by listing the evils and benefits of mineralogy. Mining is considered dangerous because of the lurking underground spirits.the author notes that the study of mineralogy helps one to understand the bible. It provides medicines and money ornaments for religious purposes tools used in agriculture industry painting music and alchemy. Cesi then answers the question he posed earlier and declares mineralogy to be a true philosophy worthy of careful study. "The numerous citations to earlier authors provide evidence of Cesi's wide reading. Commonly many authors are referenced on single points. For example in describing the generation of minerals he closely follows Aristotle but also cites Theophrastus Avicenna Albertus Magnus Agricola Gregorius Reisch Pliny Boodt Francis Rueus Marbode the Bible and numerous church fathers. The author is uncritical of the views he presents and accepts the authority of the ancient and medieval authors as his own. He believes that the Sun Moon and stars influence the subterranean world of minerals and metals and that gems have miraculous curative powers. He includes a chapter on the magnet. "Cesi divides his work into five sections: the first treats mineralogy proper the second the economic and commercial aspects for example colors and pigments the third lapidifying juices of the earth that congeal into minerals the fourth gems and the fifth metals. At the conclusion is a long and thankfully comprehensive index. Much insight about ancient philosophy and its affect in the 17th century can be gained from studying Cesi's Mineralogia."-Schuh Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobibliography 1469 to 1920 pp. 358-59. Cesi 1581-1630 was a Jesuit professor at Modena and Parma. A nice copy of a book which is now scarce on the market. ❧ Hoover 214. Partington II p. 94. Schuh 1113. Sinkankas 1221-who inaccurately calls this issue a reprint. Sinkankas knew mineralogy very well but nothing about bibliography. Thorndike VII pp. 254-57. hardcover books

CHADWICK, JAMES, LISE MEITNER , OR FRISCH, H von HALBAN, F JOLIOT, L KOWARSKI - PMM 422,b,c,d O R
Possible Existence of a Neutron Chadwick. Bound with: Disintegration of Uranium by Neutrons: a New Type of Nuclear Reaction Meitner and Frisch. Withbound: Physical Evidence for the Division of Heavy Nuclei under Neutron Bombardment. Frisch. . - DISCOVERY OF THE NEUTRON - THE ATOMIC BOMB.
London Nature 1932 a.1939. 4to. Blank wrappers. All 4 extracted from "Nature" Nos. 3252 Febr. 1932 3615 Febr.1939 3616 Febr. 1939 and 3620 March 1939.

All four papers in first edition. In 1932 James Chadwich proved the existence of th atomic particles carrying no electric charge which for this reason he called 'neutrons' the first item offered here. "In 1934 Senator Corbino head of the physics department at the University of Rome urged Enrico Fermi and his collaborators among whom was Brune Pontecorvo to patent a proces they had perfected for the production of artificial radio-activity by slow neutron bombardement. This process was a by-product of repetitions and enlargements of a discovery by Irene Curie and her husband Fredeic Joliot that the bombardment of certain light elements with alpha particles induced radio-activity. Further experiments conducted in 1938 at Berlin by Hahn and Strassmann were reported by Lise Meitner. She and her nephew O.R. Frisch working with Niels Bohr's laboratory found the true explanation of these phenomena. The interpolation of a neutron into the nucleus of a uranium atom caused it to divide into two parts and to release energy amounting to about 200000000 electron volts. This process bore such a close similarity to the division of a living cell that Frisch suggested the use of the term 'fission' to describe it.Halban Jolio and Kowarski established the theoretical possibility of a self-perpetuating reaction." Charles Bestland (Cantelowe or Cantlo Bestland) of the Royal Academy Schools [Col Serle; James Millar, Encyclopaedia Britannica
Charles Bestland Cantelowe Bestland Royal Academy Schools artist. Twelve Regency pencil portraits for engraving middle-class sitters including James Millar Encyclopaedia Britannica editor; Col. Serle; members of Trenchard family of Dorset.
English. The twelve dated in pencil between 1811 and 1829. Twelve pencil portraits executed in the same extremely capable style probably for the purposes of engraving. Each on a separate piece of 4to paper. All in good condition with light signs of age and wear a couple with minor flecking with red paint. All dated in pencil between 1811 and 1829 and all but two captioned. Several of the items with watermark date supporting the pencil dating. Three of the portraits have the tiny signature at bottom left of 'Bestland' and all would appear to be the work of the same artist although the last appears to be signed with the initials 'C H'. Apparently the work of the artist and engraver Charles Bestland 1763-c.1837 otherwise Cantelowe Bestland possibly of West End Hampstead who entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1779 as 'Cantlo Bestland' and exhibited miniatures from 1783 to 1837. See the 1802 engraving by 'Cantelowe Bestland' of Henry Singleton's painting of the Royal Academicians in council. Several embossed with details of a Bath stationers and a number of the sitters from Dorset perhaps implying a West Country connection. The last of the twelve is of particular interest as it is depicts a countryman while the other eleven portraits are of members of the middle classes. The only sitter of note is the editor of the fourth edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica James Millar 1762-1827 of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh lecturer at Edinburgh University. The sketch in light pencil is on a 22.5 x 18.5 cm piece of watermarked laid paper captioned in pencil at top left 'J Millar Esqr. March 20. 1823'. It shows a seated Millar in early old age in waistcoat and unbuttoned frock coat holding a book or papers in his right hand. The only other likeness of Millar noted in his entry in the Oxford DNB a crayon drawing by John Henning now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery shows a younger Millar in profile but the set of the mouth and lower face are the same. The other eleven portraits are as follows. TWO: 28 March 1811. 'Mrs Donne' wife of Rev. Henry Donne 1767-1830 of Cranborne Dorset whose obituary see in Gent. Mag. August 1830 Seated shrewd old lady in bonnet. THREE: 20 September 1811. Head and shoulders of balding old man in buttoned jacket staring with set mouth at viewer. FOUR: 30 November 1814. 'Mrs Cooper'. Only the head of a middle-aged woman with ringlets. FIVE: 12 November 1821. 'Mr Trenchard Pickard Monday November 12 1821 at Doctors Commons' John Trenchard Pickard later John Trenchard Trenchard d.1875 of Greenhill House Dorset Seated owlish young man in stock and buttoned frock coat. SIX: 19 June 1823. 'Robert Belt Esqr' d.1839 of the Inner Temple see obituary in Gent. Mag. February 1840 Signed 'Bestland'. Self-important figure in frock coat standing with hand on hip. SEVEN: 10 November 1823. 'Mrs Bridge'. Seated portly older woman in bonnet. EIGHT: 18 October 1823. 'Mr W. Trenchard' William Trenchard d.1830 of Litchet Maltravers Dorset see his obituary Gent. Mag. January 1830 Signed 'Bestland'. Upper body of seated older man in stock and buttoned jacket calmly seated with hands clasped on lap. NINE: 21 December 1824. 'Colol. Serle'. Col. Peter Serle d.1826South Hants Militia of Montague Place Russell Square whose daughter married Horace Twiss Signed 'Bestland'. Seated balding old man flapping book on right knee. TEN: 6 October 1827. 'Mrs Pain'. Attractive younger woman in bonnet head finished with outline of body. ELEVEN: 29 April 1829. Young man in stock and buttoned jacket hair somewhat unkempt. TWELVE: October 1829. Striking image of countryman with stick cradling in his arms a broadbrimmed hat while staring at the viewer. 'At the Revd Prettyman's Sherington'. i.e. taken at the vicarage of Rev.
