Saxony 1758. 8vo. Brown morocco Lyon ca. 1900 with gold-tooled turn-ins marbled end-papers headbands and ribbon marker in green red and yellow gilt edges signed by Louis GUÉTANT. With title-page printed in red and black and 16 numbered double-page engraved plates. 87 pp. First edition in French published one year after the first German edition of the first work attributed to David Cranz missionary in the Moravian United Brethren best known for his 1765 description of Greenland. The present work gives a history of the United Brethren their beliefs and their practices both in Europe and in their missions in America. The church was established in 1457 but the book concentrates on its history since its establishment in Herrnhut Saxony near the Moravian border under Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf in 1722. Under his guidance the church set up their mission in Greenland in 1733 and a 1747 act of Parliament under George II granted them permission to practice their religion freely in the British colonies in America. The illustrations show ordination induction baptism communion marriage exorcism an agape feast and other activities in the Moravian Church as well as their missionary work among black slaves in the West Indies 2 plates American Indians probably in Pennsylvania and native Greenlanders.With the gold-stamped leather armorial bookplate of Noé de Salvert. In very good condition with occasion light marginal foxing. The beautiful binding by the deluxe binder Louis Guétant active in Lyon ca. 1895-ca. 1920 is in fine condition with only a couple scratches on the back cover. Mr Roscoe tells me that it is decided by you Mr Campbell & Mr Colburn that Mr Galiano see Note 2 below should write an Article for the New Monthly - on the subject of Spanish romance - taking as a text my romances - Of course this is highly desirable & I have no doubt Mr Galiano would do justice to the subject which I think will be interesting - But as I have already spoken to Mr Galiano about the other article - I think the communication would come with a better grace from you & Mr Roscoe - as I was unsuccessful in the first negotiation & besides as my 'Castilian' a work of his is to be noticed in the same article that the propposal should come from a third person. Will you write me a word or appoint a meeting - Is the article to be for this or for the next month - because if it is the first case there's no time to be lost."WITH: two copies of the cartoon of Trueba y Cosio that appeared in Maclise's "Gallery of Literary Characters" in "Fraser's Magazine" as "The Author of 'The Exquisites' a farce published in 1832 by Bentley with a copy of the accompanying letterpress in which it is claimed he is English not Spanish and his work e.g. "The Exquisites or a new portraiture of exclusive society" slated.Notes:1. He contributed to the autobiographical collection "Our Exile in England: autobiographical sketches of Spanish Refugees" in the "New Monthly Magazine" vol.44.44-49 May 1835 and "The Spanish Novelists" in the "Foreign Quarterly Review" vol.2:486-511 June 1828; 2. Antonio Galiano "Born June 22 1789 in Cadiz; died Apr. 11 1865 in Madrid. Spanish political figure; participant in the military uprising of R. Riego y Núñez which led to the reestablishment of the constitutional structure in Spain 1820. During the revolution of 1820–23 Alcalá Galiano was one of the prominent leaders of the Exaltados. Between 1822 and 1823 he served as deputy in the Cortes. He opposed the Comuneros—the leftmost wing in the Spanish revolution. After the defeat of the revolution Alcalá Galiano emigrated to England returning after the amnesty of 1834. He joined the moderate party the Moderados. In 1834 he served as minister of the navy and in 1865 as minister of the economy." London 1872. Albumen print measuring 11-5/8 x 16-1/4 in 295 x 412 mm. Laid down on thick cream card with manuscript caption measuring 17 x 21 in. Image slightly faded card chipped with some minor soiling one tear not affecting image. Albumen print measuring 11-5/8 x 16-1/4 in 295 x 412 mm. A rare survival. This image appears in William Bradford's fabled book of photographs Arctic Regions. It was taken by either Dunmore or Critcherson the two professional photographers from Boston who accompanied Bradford on his 1869 expedition to the Arctic on the steamship Panther. It was probably taken at Upernavik a settlement on an island off Greenland's west coast or Godhavn.<br /> <br /> Arctic Regions included 141 albumen prints in addition to Bradford's account of the voyage. The title of the photograph here varies from the printed caption in the book where it reads: "Plate Number: 116 Esquimaux igloe or winter hut made of turf and stones. The entrance is to the left through a door which is about three and a half feet high. The length of the passage is about twelve or fifteen feet and at the farther end is another door through which one almost has to crawl on his hands and knees. After passing through there is then room to stand erect but one is forced to leave very soon owing to the bad air." <br /> <br /> This photograph is slightly larger than the one in the book which is 277 x 365mm. Furthermore the image in the book is cropped closer on the right and left margins. <br /> <br /> The New York Public Library has a folio of 26 images of near identicle size mounted on card. The portfolio was donated to the library in 1892 as part of the Robert Stuart Collection. According to Horch originally all of these images were captioned in manuscript though were later remounted with typed captions as "the original ink-written captions for the photographs had badly faded by 1940." It's interesting that the caption on their duplicate of this image is the same as ours and the image itself has not been cropped. Horch writes that Bradford probably not only selected these images himself but "closely directed the actual taking of the photographs." <br /> <br /> It's entirely likely that Bradford would have had extra prints made to distribute to friends repay favors and most of all to solicit subscribers to what was a very expensive book to publish. Given how it conforms to the examples in the Robert Stuart portfolio this particular image is probably one of them. Horch Frank. "Photographs and Paintings by William Bradford". OHIO; BLEEDING KANSAS; RECONSTRUCTION. A contemporary scrapbook of news clippings from 1856 1857 and 1868.
n.p.: n.p. 1856. Hardcover. Fair. This quarto-sized scrapbook in green cloth over boards was manufactured c. 1850 by Eayrs & Fairbanks No. 133 Washington St. Boston. It is about half full of contemporary news clippings affixed with paste. The scrapbooker did not comment on them with the exception of one instruction to "See the loose piece."The first 40 pages are from 1856-1857. The majority of articles deal with slavery especially political events in the Kansas Territory "Bleeding Kansas" the Dred Scott Case and President James Buchanan. The first clipping is from Feb. 9 1856 and details a pro-slavery meeting in Missouri addressed by David Atchison. The last clipping in this section is from April 24 1857 and reports on Stanton's speech at Lawrence Kansas.After a break of three blank pages the scrapbook resumes with news of Reconstruction from June 30 1868. There are 6 more pages of eclectica: political news clippings interspersed with a poem by Whittier and advice on How to Keep the Feet Dry.While the scrapbook is unsigned it can be tentatively identified with the Orton family since the last page contains an 1868 20th reunion announcement from the Hamilton College class of 1848 along with 1868 clippings from southwestern Ohio newspapers including the Springfield Ohio Republic. The only surviving member of that class residing near the Dayton-Springfield area is Prof. Edward Orton Sr. Yellow Springs OH where he was president of Antioch College. The 1850s clippings come mostly from New York newspapers particularly the Tribune and the Orton family was living in Chester Orange County NY at that time.Orton went on to become the first President of the Ohio State University from 1873 to 1881.The scrapbook is in fair condition; the pages and paper have held up remarkably well. However the spine is mostly detached and the binding is weak at several signatures. 003477 n.p. hardcover

No date mid-to late Nineteenth-Century. Four pages folio chipped with small loss of text. IN FRENCH. He begins: "Les nombreuses experiences que j'ai fait sur la lumiere electriquee l'appareil que j'ai confectionne me mettant en meme de pouvoir l'appliquer a l'eclairage des villes avec avantage et economie sur tout autre systeme". He discusses the expense of gas and gives a precis of his plan "L'agende" giving letters which correspond to a "dessin" which is not present and listing his points with a little detail: un ballon de gaz; filet ensoie; cordes en soie; Lampe electrique . . .; deux cabines; contre poids; deux meches en charbon lengthy description; un reflection en coupe parabolique; conducteur en Rubans de cuire; Etablissement au centre d'une ville d'ou eleverait sous les soirs le ball; fourneau; laboratoire; piles en fonction; poulie a tour mort. He mentions "difficultes meteorologique" in some detail accidents caused by electrical phenomenon. "Je liens du Sieur Lasseigne . . . qui a fait plus de cinq cent ascensions en ballon . . . ." In the final paragraph he says: Je travaille a une regulation qui fonctionant avec un tres petit nombre des elements me permettait d'appliquer la lumiere electrique a l'eclairage des magasins et des coins de rue j'en dormerai la description . . .Signed Charles Dubos. " Note: a Charles Dubos received an award for improvements to electrical lighting 1878 and invented something to improve the bicycle in 1868 see Net. This may give some idea of when he was operating - and how much of a pioneer he was in street- and domestic lighting at least in theory. IMage on request. With an engraved frontispiece a small engraved illustration by Noach van der Meer II on both title-pages 4 folding engraved plates of the old theatre; 5 folding engraved plates of the new theatre all engraved by the publishers after designs by Van der Meer and 1 by Simon Fokke. 2 works in 1 volume. Large-paper copies of the first editions of two works on the schouwburg theatre of Amsterdam the first on the old theatre which burned down in 1772 and the second on the new theatre which was built on the Leidseplein and finished in 1775. The large engraved plates show the exterior of the new theatre together with the surrounding buildings and with people on the foreground and the interior of both the theatres the balconies and stages. Two plates depict the old theatre going up in flames and another plate shows the ruins. The text gives a history of both the theatres including a description of the building process the restorations and renovations the staff the stage equipment lightning decor hoist tools costumes etc. and also including a vivid description of the fire. The first work is often ascribed to Jan Fokke but both works are also frequently ascribed to Myndert de Boer who wrote the long poems in both works.With bookplates. Binding rubbed along the extremities slightly worn at the head and foot of the spine. In fair condition only with significant soiling and large light stains somewhat affecting readability; numerous small holes to first two leaves most pinhole-sized or slightly bigger a few as large as pea-sized all sporadically affecting text; several short tears to edges and last leaf; old folds. A scarce issue of this influential German-language daily which ran from 1852-1918. The front page devotes considerable space to coverage of the looming Spanish-American War which is here termed "unvermeidlich" inevitable. The increasingly ominous preparations of the two countries since the sinking of the USS Maine are described at length as well as England and various European countries beginning to choose sides. Also included in this issue is content about Japan's imperial ambitions in China viewed here as in a positive light given the potential for spreading Christianity to China news about the Klondike Gold Rush various events occuring on the Pacific Coast and more as well as advertisements in both English and German.Not located in OCLC although several institutions hold other issues of this paper and its earlier iteration the California Chronik. With an etched frontispiece an etching of a mermaid on the title 2 folding etchings 2 full-page etchings and 21 etchings in the text all after Adriaen van Ostade. Further with musical annotation to all songs. First edition of a rare Dutch songbook with songs for farmer's festivals all with musical annotation. The work has been beautifully illustrated with etchings after the famous Dutch painter of country life Adriaen van Ostade 1610-1685. The fine etchings newly made and in reverse present an exemplary survey of Van Ostade's work showing busts of peasants women on their way to the market carrying baskets farmers smoking merry parties dancing in front of the farm a knife-grinder a schoolmaster etc. Together they give a lively impression of country life.The work was published anonymously but has been attributed to either Jan van Gijsen 1668-1722 or Aäron van Hulkenroy 1687-1733. Van Gijsen was a popular author who wrote a large number of occasional poems. His collected works were published at Amsterdam in three volumes in 1707-1711 but the present selection was probably published only once partly with the address of the Widow of Van Hulkenroy and partly with the address of J. van Egmont who had also published the collected works. Aäron van Hulkenroy was the son of publisher Hermanus van Hulkenroy and took over the publishing company after both his parents had passed. He was also a poet who wrote various poetry collections which were always published by his mother or later himself. The present work has been attributed to him because the very first poem on the verso of the half title is signed with his initials.The boards and spine are rubbed with some loss of material at the lower outer corner of the front board. Original photograph album. c.1935. Small oblong photograph album 18 x 13cm. Contemporary quarter blue cloth over paper-covered boards. The contents comprising 43pp. containing 88 mounted black and white photographs depicting peoples and scenes in the Gold Coast many with annotations in ink beneath. Each photograph measuring approximately 8 x 6cm. Condition is very good the binding remaining firm with a little rubbing to the extremities. The contents with some marking from the glue used to mount the photographs at the corners affecting four pages are otherwise in very good order. The photographs themselves remain clean and undamaged. An uncommon snap-shot album created by a British soldier stationed in the Gold Coast now Ghana during the 1930s predominantly documenting local people and their daily lives in the south of the country with several mentions of Busua and Takoradi. The album's creator clearly had a genuine interest in the country recording with detail various aspects of the society around him including for example depictions of street scenes festivities and portraits a "native school teacher with his class on the bush path near Bushwa" "palm wine in gourds or calabashes sold by native women" "native girl unmarried pounding cassara to make fu-fu" "two native girls both married as discerned by their hair pattern" "a Mohammedan festival" and "a Paramount Chief under his umbrella of state". An intriguing album filled with 43 silver gelatin photographs documenting the construction and operation of the Murphy Murray Dredging Company erected in less than three months by “Wicks†and operated until March 1941.
Gold Hill Jackson County OR: Murphy Murray Dredging Company ca. 1939-1941. Oblong 4to. 30 pp unpaginated. on thick black paper stock. With 43 silver gelatin photographs mounted w/ black corners sized from 2.75 x 3.75 in. up to 3.5 x 6 in. some date stamped on versos several w/ pencil annotations in cursive manuscript minor chipping to couple corners edgewear. Contemporary flexible ribbed black cloth post-binder nickel plated screwposts at gutter margins minor edgewear VG. This series of photographs captures the historic gold mining by the last gold dredge to operate on Foots Creek in Southern Oregon on the property of Edward Dole. Several dredges and placer mining operations mined Foots Creek from the 19th well into the 20th Century with one dredge owned by the Rogue River Gold Mining Co. known as the Ferry Dredge dredged both forks of Foots Creek until 1935 when it was moved to Graves Creek. Under the direction of “Wicks the Boss†this dredge was brought in unassembled by railroad in 1939 and “this was his 35th dredge.†The photos show the steel hull mass boom erecting the steel framework framing the steel gantries for the dredge installing the winches as well as the massive 67 bucket line ladder built by New York Engineering Co. Yonkers NY. The newly constructed dredge shown here proceeded to work it’s way up the creek digging 20 feet below the water line and moved 4000 yards daily through the screening and wash plant with conveyor belts stacking the tailings behind. In March 1941 just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor the dredge was dismantled and moved to another location by the Murray Dredging co. although mounds and walls of rock paralleling the creek still offer visible signs of its operation. Gray 1810-1889 who traveled to the Lapwai Mission in Lewiston ID in 1836 where he was the Nez Perce secular agent and she subsequently later married Jacob Kamm 1823-1912 pioneering Oregon industrialist and entrepreneur. First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional offprint for the placer gold mining concentrator for “float or flour gold†developed by A.D. Clarke in the early 1880’s at an Idaho gold mining operation. The invention required parallel bars of iron an 1/8th of an inch apart bolted in place allowing water to flow through a sluice from a hydraulic mining operation with good gentle water flow and then would be directed through a series of tanks fitted with sage brush to collect the particles of gold and then across a series of riffles to pick up still finer gold particles. There was a mini gold rush in Clatsop OR in late-1884-1885 after J.M. Weed filed a placer claim for his mine Gertrude on Rock Creek in May 1885 which claimed loose valuable material in gravel on Rock Creek followed by a plethora of gold miners staking claims in the area and by 1889 the Rock Creek Mining District was formed. Maggie Gray b. 1853 was the youngest daughter of William H. Gray and served as postmaster in Olney OR from about 1878-1884 according to government publications but sadly there are no production figures for any of the mines and no further census or government records for Maggie after 1884. Four albumen gold mining prospectus photos of the Stillaguamish & Sultan Mining Co. claims along Copper Canyon Creek and the Hoodoo Quartz Claim which were situated eight miles from the very successful Monte Cristo gold mining operation.
Seattle WA & Silverton WA: Stillaguamish & Sultan Mining Co. 606 Bailey Bldg. ca. 1893. Four albumen cabinet photographs sized 3.9 x 4.9 in. mounted on thick studio board stock sized 4.25 x 5.25 in. w/ all four containing manuscript annotations in ink on versos minor dustsoiling edgewear minor over-exposure to a couple images still a nice grouping with consistent contrast and definition. These scarce original albumen photos show the canyon water fall power and miners along the Hoodoo Quartz Claim Mineral Survey No. 403A and B which was filed originally in 1892 and are neatly numbered 3 6 15 & 11. The first image shows a heavily forested canyon with creek running through and annotations on verso detailing that the “Anaconda and Roman Senator lodes at the head of gulch.†The second photo shows fast running water fall and creek -- “water power that will be utilized in the development of the Stilliguamish sic and Sultan Mining Co’s property. Copper Lake Canyon.†Third photo depicts gold miners carrying and working with pick axes in “Hoodoo Canyon 500 feet higher up. . . the vein is found in the bed of the gulch at this point.†The series of mines developed by the Stillaguamish & Sultan Mining Co. had a well-defined fissure vein carrying iron and copper pyrites and pyrrhotite with bell metal all contained in a lime quartz gangue. The main tunnel was driven 420 feet on the Hoodoo ledge with about another 200 feet of tunneling ore concentrate worth about $83 a ton including gold silver and copper ores. The description on back of four describes “passageway where work was shot away for approach to Hoodoo tunnel. The snow banks in the distance and at the right are at the foot of Big Four Mountain. . . seen plainly from Monte Cristo 8 miles East.†By 1905 the company was largely dormant and later the mines would be owned by the Sykes Estate of which the Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust Co. of Chicago was the trustee. 9 March 1930; 'Trent House Main Street Georgetown'. 10 pages on 5 8vo leaves. In good condition but with a few large blots. The first part of a letter by a writer who appears to be English. Straight out of B. Traven. The author wants Joan to join him and Gwen in partnership with Hamerly. 'Hamerly is down here from one of his expeditions & we became friendly through his having lived & travelled widely in the Paraguayan Chaco. He is rather what the Americans call a roughneck but he has a most exhaustive knowledge of South America having done some tremendous journeys right through Brazil has had some extraordinary adventures which he tells amusingly in his broken English . He is like a character in an adventure novel . has made personal friends of all the big men in the mining fields the Venezuala Generals & Colonels &c & also of big Govt officials at Caraccas & he has obtained a concession of very rich gold lands immediately the other side of the frontier which he has not yet had time to work. The terms of his concession permit him to shoot anybody who goes on his land. .' There is 'a small shop at Five Stars run by a Chinaman Che Fat who could make a profit selling at 5 cents per lb cheaper . At Arakaka there is another Chinese store just sold out to Che Fat by Ho Shoo Hamerly is in partnership with Camizoulia wealthy Portugee of Georgetown who sends up the goods he requires . He wants to extend by establishing a permanent store on the frontier & to do that it is necessary to squeeze out the Chinks . I have discussed the proposition with two experienced men & they both agree that the only sound way to do gold mining is to establish it on the basis of a bush store which provides cash to carry on prospecting till creeks with rich pay are found. . If a bush negro comes in with plenty of gold & buys his provisions dirt cheap he feels he has been well treated & is expansive & wants to buy gaudy useless things that attract him & then does not mind how much he pays for it as he is totally without any standard of comparison on which to form an estimate of it's sic value .' Edinburgh: The Edinburgh Evening Courant 1851. With an article on the back page column 3 entitled "Gold In Australia" measuring 13 column inches which states "The discovery of the fact by Mr. Hargraves that the country from the Mountain Ranges to an indefinite extent in the interior is an immense gold field" which has ignited "a universal rush to the diggings". The article goes on to describe the rapid rise in the cost of provisions; a description of miners returning to town with gold nuggets; the government geologist's visit to the site; and the need to appoint a "Commissioner over the gold regions. in which Mr. Hargraves being the discoverer. points him out as the most suitable and worthy person for the appointment." An article picked up by the Edinburgh Courant from the Sydney Morning Herald of May 20 which took it from The Bathurst Free Press of May 17th. Small chips at top edges a little browned. The introduction nicely summarizes the increased presence of the Australian colonies: "In 1851 the Australasian colonies were but poorly represented although a few made some efforts to put in an appearance. . in 1862 the Australian colonies exhibit one of the most extensive and finest collections of the whole group. . New South Wales has a beautifully arranged collection of its gold products from all the principal fields in the several shapes of nuggets quartz grain gold washing stuff coin from the Sydney mint &c. . Victoria has gone to great expense . one of the most striking objects is a gilded obelisk representing the actual amount of gold found in the colony since 1851 about 800 tons or L103000000 sterling.:" Also information on wine with wine coming from South Australia; 4 exhibitors from Western Australia; Mr. Thomas Little of Dardanup won a medal for his light red Frontignac; Victoria 19 exhibitors with no wines older than 1858 shown putting them at a "taste disadvantage". Along the falls of a tree-lined river two First Nations men are pulling a canoe into the water directed by another in an elaborate feather headdress; a wigwam with mother and child is on the same shore to their left; across the river a longhouse and structure for smoking fish with another group of native people can be seen; at the far left a First Nations man is standing in his canoe fishing with a pole in the water just below the rapids.<br /> <br /> Although the 1796 watermark on the paper is consistent with drawings by Heriot the unfinished quality of this work make attribution difficult. However it is somewhat reminiscent of a smaller grisaille watercolor signed by Heriot titled FALLS OF THE POQUISQUE ON THE RIVER ST JOHN on verso sold at Waddington's March 15 2018 lot 137.<br /> <br /> Furthermore this scene is reminiscent of one described by Heriot in his Travels in the Canadas 1807 in which he describes Native American fishing on the cacasdes of St. Mary nine miles below the entrance to Lake Superior: "It is at the bottom of the rapids and even among their billows which foam with ceaseless impetuosity that innumerable quantities of excellent fish may be taken from the spring until the winter; the species which is found in the greatest abundance is denominated by the savages atticameg or white fish; the Michilimakinac trout and pickerell are likewise caught here. These aflford a principal means of subsistence to a number of native tribes. No small degree of address as well as strength is employed by the savages in catching these fish; they stand in an erect attitude in a birch canoe and even amid the billows they push with force to the bottom of the waters a long pole at the end of which is fixed a hoop with a net in the form of a bag into which the fish is constrained to enter. They watch it with the eye when it glides among the rocks quickly ensnare it and drag it into the canoe. In conducting this mode of fishing much practice is required as an inexperienced person may by the efforts which he is obliged to make overset the canoe and inevitably perish."<br /> <br /> Trained by Paul Sandby at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich London Heriot worked as a clerk for Board of Ordnance. "In 1792 Heriot was posted to Quebec and promoted clerk of the cheque in the Ordnance department. Heriot was to remain in Lower Canada until 1816 except apparently for two periods of absence in 1796-97 and in 1806. His first years at Quebec are not well documented. Sketches record visits in and about Quebec and Montreal perhaps on Ordnance business. In November 1792 he published a sketch of Jersey in the Quebec Magazine and the following year he prepared a view of Quebec perhaps also intended for publication. When he returned to Britain in 1796 he resided in London travelled to the south coast and made at least one sketching foray into Wales . A watercolour prepared from his sketches of Wales and two Canadian views were accepted by the Royal Academy of Arts for exhibition in the spring. Heriot probably sailed for Lower Canada soon afterwards taking notes and making sketches on the voyage. The impact of his visit to Britain was considerable. While there he had been stimulated by the art he had seen and by his success as an artist. He returned with a fresh enthusiasm for the Canadas; he began to read about their past and to make elaborate notes and numerous sketches of the places he visited and the peoples he encountered. His sojourn abroad had affected his artistic vision of the Canadas; his drawings and water-colours assumed a new confidence and his landscape forms developed a new strength and grandeur. In London he had probably studied the simply handled and remarkably strong water-colours of younger British artists such as Thomas Girtin Joseph Mallord William Turner and John Varley. Either in Britain or in Lower Canada he had also become familiar with Lieutenant George Bulteel Fisher's Six views of North America . London 1796. This is an excellent RARE and OBSCURE early group of six b.w. original photographs documenting the activities of the "Hong Wei Bing" "Chinese Red Guards". . It shows early examples of street action at the beginning of the "Da Wen Hua Da Geming" "Cultural Revolution". This movement officially ran from 1966-1967 but in reality lasted until Mao's death on September 9 1976. . THE PHOTOS: . 1. Although the "Da Wen Hua Da Geming" "Cultural Revolution" was later brutally put down throughout China by the People's Liberation Army with much force and large numbers of deaths the resistant anarchistic "Hong Wei Bing" "Chinese Red Guards" continued their chaotic run until the Mao's death. . Original photographs of the "Hong Wei Bing" "Chinese Red Guards" and the "Da Wen Hua Da Geming" "Cultural Revolution" are RARE and not commonly found. Therefore this group of original period photographs are a stunning primary and historical record of the early actions and events. . CONDITION: The group of photographs are in excellent condition no defects. Each comes with a red printed caption in Chinese tipped on to the edge of the photograph. We note that at the beginning of each caption paragraph the first character or perhaps a number was scratched out. This does not detract from the overall capton. . Prominent Ottoman and entourage boarding boats before the Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque.
Istanbul 1840. Mounted on a larger sheet of paper in a passe-partout. Watercolour drawing on wove paper 29.5 x 45 cm with highlights in shellac and a thin black border. A lively scene on the Tophane Quay in Istanbul with the background dominated by the dome and minaret of the 1580 Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque. The tip of a second minaret perhaps from a different mosque is visible in the distance. On the quay an opulently dressed black-bearded Ottoman a high official in the Emperor's court or a wealthy merchant stands in the centre of the scene with his entourage. He wears red robes trimmed with gold and with black decorations a white turban around a red fez and a gold waistband with the hilts of two guns sticking out and carries a walking stick in his left hand. His entourage includes a white-bearded Islamic holy man with a green turban around a red fez a Greek or Armenian man in a black hat a dark-skinned woman in green robes holding a bundle and several other men women and children. They appear to be preparing to depart in the boats that stand ready. Two more dark-skinned women in white robes with red and blue stripes follow the party deferentially. Several people appear in the boats in addition to their crews. Four more white-bearded Islamic holy men each again with a green turban around red fez sit in one with some women while two Ottoman infantrymen with bayonets stand in another one just stepping out. Other parts of the quay show various men busy with their trades or smoking long pipes. From the collection of Hooton Pagnell Hall in Yorkshire England. With a 1.5 cm tear in the water at the foot of the scene not approaching the boats and otherwise in very good condition. Japan.: No publisher. Meiji 16 1883. Japanese accordion style book orihon 10 numbered double page colour lithograph illustrations multiple images per page 24.7 x 17.5 cm patterned cloth-covered boards. Some soiling wear to cover extremities some even browning to pages but overall the contents are in very good condition. The illustrations feature details of brocade cloths with gold thread and silver thread as well as damask textile and gold foiled textile. Some of the samples are enlarged so that it is possible to see the details of the weave. The book is exquisitely printed in colour to give the effect of the real thing. It is an early example of Japanese colour lithography and an item of interest to fabric and clothing historians. The chop on the last page says that it was printed in the Printing Agency of the Treasury dated on July 28 Meiji 16 1883. . No publisher. hardcover

Lewis directed and played for the house bands of the Congress Hotel Multnomah Hotel McElroy’s Spanish Ballroom orchestra leader at the Coronado Beach Hotel in California Portland Night Club Garden Dancing Palace in Spokane WA and the famed Bungalow Club in Seaside OR.

This unusually well-preserved archive of a Roaring 20’s Jazz Orchestra musician and Band Leader in the Pacific Northwest reveals the exuberance and business success of this largely forgotten artist through his successful years before foundering during the Great Depression. Both scrapbooks open with clippings thank you and recommendation letters as well as dance broadsides and photographs during 1926 at the height of Lyle Lewis’s orchestra appreciation. Testimonials include B.J. Saad who owned the Garden Dancing Palace and stated “I have taken the Garden which is second to no other ballroom west of Chicago. That is why I have secured Lyle Lewis recognized as one of the best orchestra leaders on the Coast.†C.W. Craig of Lipman Wolfe & Co. department store extolls that Jazz music dance held at the Multnomah Hotel March 16 1926 that “I don’t think we have ever enjoyed better or more up to date dance music than that furnished by your splendid aggregation.†Broadsides and notices advertise the Lewis Jazz Orchestra playing the Grand Ball Room at the Masonic Temple Congress Hotel leading McElroy’s Oregonians at the McElroy’s Spanish Ballroom the Dessert Hotel Oasis near Spokane parties for Studebaker and more. One of the mounted letters includes a rather sad severance letter signed by Cole McElroy explaining the circumstances of Lyle Lewis’s leaving stating “I realise that you were a victim of circumstances. On account of the fact that you had a fine band organized. . . certain music masters of the theatre jobs saw fit to take your men away from you thereby breaking up your fine band and forcing me to make a deal for another organization.†McElroy 1888-1947 was known as “Pop†McElroy was a popular band leader who during the years before World War I and after played the Palm Gardens often and had great success in his McElroy Spanish Ballroom which opened in 1926 and then opened another Seattle McElroy Ballroom in 1928. Several TLS on letterheads include those for KXL Radio station KGW Radio Station and the KOIN Studio Director for The Portland News which played three nights a week on air for over six months. The many photographs capture the Lyle Lewis band joking around with their instruments on the road fully arrayed on stage in the Radio Station posing at various venues stages and even one as late as 1939 conducting the Lyle E. Lewis Dance Orchestra. The band included Cluet Mansfield formerly with Henry Halsted band William Webber on drums Eddie Scroggins & Frank Champion as sax players G. Berardinelli on Bass and also played dances at the Irvington Club Multnomah Athletic Club and for a while with the historic Congress Hotel in Portland which had been the City’s first reinforced concrete building erected during the Progressive Era and by 1924 expanded to 119 rooms with vibrant Jazz ballroom. The daily diaries for 1929 and 1930 show that Lewis regularly played at the Cotillion Hall now the Crystal Ballroom initially at $ 7.00 per night in 1929 and then steadily dropping to less than half by 1933. He writes about traveling for a gig in San Francisco with Mansfield in 1929 leaving Tuesday and arriving Wednesday Sept. 18 1929 driving 40 mph and getting 19 miles to the gallon with a drive made in 19 hours and 15 minutes. He played extensively at the Bungalow Club in Seaside OR which had opened originally June 19 1920 and for more than 25 years was the destination for the biggest names in the Big Band Jazz era including Lyle E. Lewis Cole McElroy Duke Ellington Bob Crosby Glenn Miller and tragically became connected with the death of Jimmie Lunceford who died from a heart attack just before playing his last set at the Bungalow after playing McElroy’s Ballroom in Portland 2 nights before. Lewis 1890-1948 was a popular Portland Oregon based jazz band & orchestra leader who managed to lie about his age and enlist at 15 in the Oregon National Guard Co. G 3rd Battalion served for three years and in May 1910 married Genevieve Franklin while working as salesman and musician before World War I Following the War he quickly became a successful band leader including successful stints with the Cole McElroy Spanish Ballroom Congress Hotel Multnomah Hotel Bungalow Garden Ballroom as well as the Coronado Hotel in California. As indicated by the daily diaries he maintained a fairly close relationship with his daughter Genevieve “Martha†but became largely estranged from his wife Genevieve living in separate rooming houses or hotels. Still in her position as a sales manager she managed to convince Meier & Frank to hire him as their house band for store functions and the restaurant while during the Great Depression he mostly worked for the US Forest Service mapping division while his show business largely disappeared. By 1943 he became the commercial agent for ACME Fast Freight where he worked as commercial agent until his death. This cataloguer could find no surviving recorded discography record for Lyle E. Lewis and his assorted incarnations although there are a few recordings for the Cole McElroy Band from 1926-1928 which most likely would have included him as band leader and musician. Lyle E.
