Nieuhof, Jan ( John Or Johann )
An Embassy From The East India Company of The United Provinces to The Grand Tartar Cham Emperor Of China.; A Facsimile.
Menston / Harrogate UK: Scolar Press Limited/ Palmyra Press. . 1972. First Edition Thus; First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good- in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. A 20th Century Exact sized FACSIMILE of "An Embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to The Grand Tartar Cham Emperor Of China EMPEROUR OF CHINA Delivered by their Excellencies PETER DE GOYER and JACOB DE KEYZER At his Imperial City of PEKING. WHEREIN THE CITIES TOWNS VILLAGES PORTS RIVERS etc. In their Passages from CANTON to PEKING Are Ingeniously Described by MR. JOHN NIEVHOFF Steward to the AMBASSADOURS. ALSO An Epistle of Father JOHN ADAMS their Antagonist concerning the whole Negotiation. WITH An Appendix of several Remarks taken out of Father ATHANASIUS KIRCHER. Englished and set forth with their several Sculptures by JOHN OGILEY Esq; Master of his Majesties Revels in the Kingdom of Ireland. LONDON Printed by John Macock for the Author MDCLXIX." Due to being translated into English by the bookseller John Ogilby in 1669 this is one of the earliest European attempts at an accurate description of China and its population. Due to its isolation under the Ming dynasty earlier descriptions of China relied on fanciful tales and legends many originating from ancient and medieval texts and hearsay. A Folio sized hardcover book measuring 42.5 x 4.5 x 28.2 cm approx 16.3/4" x 11.1" x 2.5" . In powder blue cloth boards with a brown spine unknown material with gilt title lettering and an inset image of an Oriental on the front board. Top edge gilt. Some light wear and a few negligible marks to the light blue cloth almost inevitable with this colour actually a rather strange binding but looks good on the shelf showing the spine only. INTERNALLY FINE. A former Owner's bookplate Dennis Law on the front pastedown otherwise NO Inscriptions or marks. A Fine clean and tight copy. 18pp prelims double page Map 327pp 106pp 6 blanks. Black and White Plates Illus. Maps Plans and Portraits. The book consists of both an account of an embassy of the Dutch East India Company to the Shunzhi Emperor 1638-1661 and an account of general Chinese customs and occupations. The information was gathered and collated by Johan Nieuhof one of the party which visited the Emperor in Beijing. His first-hand account therefore allowed accurate descriptions and depictions of Chinese architecture clothing and landscapes. Notably the book contains possibly one of the earliest descriptions of the cultivation of TEA specifically stating its expense and its value to East Asian society. A great chance to acquire a great copy of a facsimile of a book which in the Original costs many LITERAL Thousands of £s and $s! This has to be a Limited run production due to it's size and type but as the Scolar Press went out of business in the 1980s. I have been unable to find out how many copies were produced PLEASE NOTE : This book is very large and overweight c. 5.5 Kilos UNPACKAGED and will almost certainly require extra postage for International customers. Kyoto Osaka & Edo: 1808. First edition of one of the three most important Japanese works on orthopedic medicine. The book is based on Chinese medical science most notably the Sheng ji zong lu written in the 11th century and the Yi zong jin jian by Qian Wu active 1736-43 who also wrote the famous Yusuan Yizong Jinjian Imperially Commissioned Golden Mirror of Medical Learning published in 1742. Our work presents a system of surgical treatment to cure injuries to bones principally fractures and dislocations with instructions on how to stop bleeding and to bind or immobilize the injured part by bandaging. There is a substantial section on materia medica and the compounding of prescriptions considered essential to the treatment of bones in Japan. The numerous and fine woodcuts depict braces and corsets plasters manipulations bandaging techniques casts etc. Many of these techniques are clearly taken from Western medicine. Ninomiya 1754-1827 was a prominent medical doctor who laid down the foundations of orthopedic surgery in Japan. He studied in Nagasaki where he learned Western and Japanese techniques from Kogyu Yoshio 1724-1800 interpreter of Dutch and a famous physician and surgeon who had a "Western-style" room at his home in the city. After further study under a number of doctors throughout Japan including Gento Yoshiwara Ninomiya established himself in Edo where he had an extremely successful practice. After contracting syphilis as a baby from his wet nurse Ninomiya lost his nose and wore a artificial nose for the rest of his life. Nice set. Nisbet, Jim
THE PRICE OF THE TICKET SIGNED BY ALL THREE CONTRIBUTORS
Sun City AZ U.S.A.: Dennis McMillan Publications 2003. 1st ed. Fine in dust jacket. This copy is SIGNED by all three contributors: Nisbet the Author S. Clay Wilson Illustrator and Dennis McMillan the Publisher. This first trade edition is limited to just 1000 copies. Previously only available in French. Dustjacket endsheets and foil stamping all by S. Clay Wilson. The jacket is graphically illustrated and something to see. The inside front page is embosed with a gold skull. " In this bleak noir novel set in San Francisco Nisbet Prelude to a Scream etches the lives of two wretched misfits in acid prose. At 50-plus years of age Mark "Pauley" Paulos has survived the horrifically abusive childhood trauma that forms the book's unforgettable prologue along with untracked periods of jail and other misadventures to achieve a kind of precarious stasis. Martin Seam on the other hand has little idea of who or what he is. Full of wants and needs and thoroughly amoral he is willing to steal cheat scam or do anything merely to quiet those incessant desires. Unfortunately Martin is as unsuccessful as he is unscrupulous. When these two collide in their separate orbits about the universe it seems like a cosmic joke. If Elmore Leonard had created Pauley and Martin they would shine with a fine comic sheen. In Nisbet's hands they scratch prickle sweat and stink. Nisbet can overwrite "Like the lysergic pinwheel from which depointillates all phenomenology Mark Paulos' entire juvenile world devolved upon that nail and its strop" but he also presents with wrenching effectiveness the fragile accommodations his characters have to make in order to survive in a hostile world they can never overcome and can keep at bay only for a time." -- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. Mental Mapping
London: Printed by Women in Print. Wraps. Good. no date perhaps circa 1981. Wraps. 12 ½ by 8 ¾ inches. 20 pp. Black and white illustrations and clip art throughout. A zine style work written with a strong feminist perspective. No authors are given but most of the zine consists of an interview/conversation between two people musing on rock music including the punk and new wave genres reflecting on the politics of music and the influence of musicians. The last several pages of the zine contain comic style clip art and captions on the subject of women being oppressed in society through subtle means including sexism inherent in culture the workplace etc. One comic seemingly predicts the concept of mansplaining with captions reading " 'Do I oppress you' 'you oppress me intelectually sic' 'is that because I'm a man' 'it's still more accepted that men know about things.it does take courage for a woman to express opinions about a lot of things.'" Printed at the Women in Print collective. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven toning minor soiling and some staining to the covers. Moderate wrinkling and creasing. Mark Jay Collection. Noonan, Allen (or Allen Michael, 1916-2010)
EXCERPTS FROM THE LAST GOSPEL OF JESUS THE CHRIST
Long Beach California: Millennium 1960. Among the author's earliest published work this collection of 24 short commentaries warns of the imminent collapse of international capitalism and calls for a "New Age Movement" rooted in cosmic consciousness: "We shall not be concerned about invaders from other planets for our Space brothers of the United Planets shall be helping us to realize our great new dream. No person can leave this planet except in our ships until they have built an energy body by purifying their aura of negation and cleansing their body of organic matter by eating only natural organic foods.â€<br /> <br /> Noonan was working as a sign painter in Long Beach California in 1947 when he claimed to have an encounter with alien beings. He described being enveloped by "ultraviolet light entwined with gold threads" and pulled into a spaceship where he had a transcendental experience of being shown his entire life and made aware of spirits guiding humanity and of his own future role in that process. Later Noonan claimed that his first personal contact with alien beings happened in 1954 near Giant Rock in the Mojave Desert when he had an ecstatic experience interacting with three beings that exited a landed spaceship.<br /> <br /> Soon thereafter Noonan opened a cafe-art studio in Long Beach called the House of Meditation which reformed in San Francisco during the Summer of Love as the One World Family Commune OWFC. Like other New Age and hippie communities it was largely composed of young people motivated by rejection of capitalism western religion searching for closer connection to nature and acceptance of communal living and non-monogamous relationships. It was during this time that Noonan opened Here and Now the first vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco completely operated by the commune's members.<br /> <br /> In 1973 Noonan - who also used the alias Allen Michael - founded The Universal Industrial Church of the New World Comforter and published the first volume of his channeled revelations The Everlasting Gospel which combined UFO beliefs and Christian-based themes of good and evil with New Age concepts of spirituality and higher states of being. By 1975 the commune began decreasing in size and relocated to Stockton California. Noonan as Allen Michael ran for President of the United States in 1980 and 1984 on a Synthesis Party platform advocating for nuclear disarmament. Prior to his death he was living with a handful of aging members and maintaining the Galactic Messenger Network a website for the Everlasting Gospel.<br /> <br /> Quarto: 41 pp. Mimeographed on standard 8 1/2" x 11" white stock and bound with staples below a light brown paper title sheet. Some minor toning and wear along the extremities; otherwise very good. Scarce OCLC locates only two holdings: Hamilton College Library New York and at the University of Utah. Millennium unknown
