Silius Italicus or Tiberius Catius Asconius Silius Italicus
C. SILII ITALICI VIRI CONSULARIS DE BELLO PUNICO SECUNDO LIBRI XVII. Christophorus Cellarius recensuit & Notis & Tabulis Geographicis ac gemino Indice Rerum & Latinitatis illustrauit
Lipsiae Leipzig: Thomas Fritsch 1695. Hardcover. Very good. Silius c.28-c.103 was consul in 68 and governor of the province of Asia in 69; he sought no further office but lived thereafter on his estates as a literary man and collector. He revered the work of Cicero whose Tusculan villa he owned and that of Virgil whose tomb at Naples he likewise owned and near which he lived. His epic Punica in 17 books on the second War with Carthage 218-202 BC draws heavily on Livy's account. Conceived as a contrast between two great nations and their supporting gods championed by the two great heroes Scipio and Hannibal his poem is written in pure Latin and smooth verse filled throughout with echoes of Virgil above all and other poets. Includes supplementary material by the German classicist Christoph Cellarius. 22 586 52. Frontispiece engraving with a title page decoration and six folding maps. 12mo. In a contemporary full vellum binding. Typical mild browning to the contents with a negligible spot to the top edge. Minor soiling to the vellum; otherwise very good. Thomas Fritsch hardcover books

Sir Robert Peel [restoration of the Gold Standard, 1821]:
Peel; Gold Standard Anonymous printed petition to one of the Houses of Parliament.
c.1833. Text printed in Daniel Edward"An Appeal to the Landed Manufacturing Trading and Professional Interests of Great Britain: Exhorting Them to Insist Upon the Immediate Redemption of the Public Debt" 1833 . 4 pages 8vo. Pagination: 1 2-3 4. A frail survival: paper grubby discoloured and dogeared with a few closed tears and some fraying to extremities but the text clear and legible. A space at the beginning of the document for the insertion of the petitioner's name in manuscript has been left blank. Begins: 'The Petition of and all other Owners of Land subject to Mortgages and other pecuniary payments charged on it before its depreciation in consequence of the return to the present Gold Currency by which the value of every denomination of Money is so much increased'. The petitioner states p.1 that he 'hath for forty years with attention and concern observed the changes that have taken place in the condition of the middle and lower classes of society and his conviction is that most of the distress and calamities that they have experienced during that period may fairly be imputed to the Revenue Laws and the changes that have taken place in the Currency'. He calls for the appointment of 'a Committee to inquire into the practicability of the redemption of the Public Debt' and 'an Act to suspend all proceedings at Law and in Equity for the recovery of sums of money charged on land and the sale of land by persons having any claims to pecuniary payments out of it until the redemption of the Public Debt be effected'. Sleidan, John [or Sleidanus, Johannes]
The General History of the Reformation of the Church From the Errors and Corruptions of the Church of Rome: Begun in Germany by Martin Luther With the Progress thereof in all Parts of Christendom From the Year 1517 to the Year 1556. Written in Latin. And faithfully Englished. To which is Added A Continuation To the End of the Council of Trent in the Year 1562. By Edmund Bohun Esq
London: Printed by Edw. Jones for Abel Swall.and Henry Bonwicke. 1689 Second English edition of an important history of the Reformation. Contemporary reverse calf ruled in blind. Folio. Title-page printed in black and red. The Bohun work with separate title-page. With six engraved portrait plates. Joints starting to crack but sound. Armorial bookplate of Cobbold of Ipswich later ownership annotation dated 1980 on front pastedown. A good clean copy. Johannes Sleidanus 1506-66 was born in Schleidan Luxembourg and studied ancient languages and literatures at Liège and Cologne and law and jurisprudence at Paris and Orléans. At Lièges he encountered humanist scholars and developed an interest in Protestant ideas. He went to work for Cardinal du Bellay and was employed in the futile negotiations of the French court to make an alliance with the German Protestants against the Emperor Charles V. In 1542 he settled in Strassbourg. He was in the habit of copying all papers that had any bearing on the Reformation to which he had access and Martin Bucer who had seen his papers suggested that Philip of Hesse appoint him historian of the Reformation giving him a salary and access to all necessary documents. Thus began his great work the first volume of which appeared in 1545. That same year he traveled to England in a French embassy to Henry VIII and there he collected further materials for his work. He later went to Marburg to view the archives of Philip of Hesse. In 1551 he attended the Council of Trent. He finished his history in 1554 despite financial problems. He died in poverty the following year. Printed by Edw. Jones, for Abel Swall...and Henry Bonwicke.. unknown
