Paris / probably Amsterdam: Gedrukt tot Parys inde Koninglyke druckery van den klyne Louis Carel Allard. Imprime a l'Imprimerie Royal du petit Louisâ€. Circa 1706. Very rare and desirable overall plates are crisp and clean; corner of title and edges of some plates slightly darkened; corner torn off at plate 13. . Notes: An important work on the War of the Spanish Succession with a collection of prints by Carel Allard or “Petit Louis†ridiculing the “Sun King†or Monarch Louis xiv in eclipse. Many of Allard’s prints initially separately were published in sets of varying combinations – including the present ‘Almanach’. For instance the Rijksmuseum owns a copy of a later 1713 publication entitled 't Lust-Hof van Momus Beplant met de voornaamste Gewassen van Mars in Europa Een opgepronkt met Staat-kundige Zinnebeelden Des Tegenwoordigen Oorlogs’ by Abraham Allard in which most of the prints of the present work are incorportated. Carel Allard known for depicting royalty inspired other later publications such as satirical engravings in the ‘South Sea Bubble’ published approximately a decade later. Muller comments on the rarity of the prints and the present series; only few known copies exist mainly owned by institutions; Muller states: "Their value as expressions of the spirit and life of the common people is inestimable: indeed there is almost no period in our history for which we possess such a rich treasure of prints."
While the title states that the publication was printed in Paris researchers claim the place of editing and printing to be Amsterdam that not the royal imprimerie of ‘Petit Louis’ was used but the printing house of Carol Allard in Amsterdam. Moreover it is claimed that Allard edited the work in Amsterdam.
Size: Small Folio 317 x206 mm Illustration: Text in Dutch and French.
Illustrated with engraved letterpress copper title and eighteen 18 copper engraved plates; of these seven 7 full page with letterpress text and eleven 11 double page; all accompanied by text each in Dutch and all except for the fifth entitled ‘DE FRANSCHE EN SPAANSCHE HUYLEBALKEN’ and the eighteenth entitled ‘HARPAGON den Ouden Schrok EN HARLEKYN Smit’- all in French. Work on the War of the Spanish Succession ridiculing the Sun King. Provenance: Pencilled and ink notations and signature on upper pasted and free endpaper References: Brunet I: 194-195; Cohen: col. 28; Muller F: ‘De Nederlandsche Geschiedenis in Platen - Beredeneerde Beschrijving van Nederlandsche Historieplaten …’ 1863-70 vol.1: xiii-xv; vol 4: 36 3037/3067/ 3068/3082. Allen, Richard Edward
Origin of Street and Place Names - A Pictorial History of Vancouver: Book 1
128 pages. Abundantly illustrated in black and white. "This is the first attempt of which I am aware to describe a city, street-by-street and thereby to evoke memories in its readers. It is the kind of book which had to be written soon or later. The author has rightly started with the core of Vancouver and plans to extend his researches progressively to the suburban areas." - Warnett Kennedy, Alderman, Vancouver, B.C. Well-worn. no publisher stated Lugduni ie Paris - Jacob L'Aîne Rue Philosophie N°6 Orleans 1658 ie 1793 . 1st edition. Hardback. Diced calf VG. 172iv94pp marbled endpapers gilt dentelles all edges gilt leather a little rubbed & upper hinge cracked but holding Ex Libris Caroli Waldstein with their armorial bookplate neat late 19th century annotation to the first blank pages of the second title a little browned a nice copy. Two political tracts published in France in the early days of the Republic which look back to the English protectorate & the lessons to be learnt. The first is a translation of 'Killing Noe Murder' 1658 a pamphlet which advocates the assassination of Oliver Cromwell. Authorship has been attributed to either Edward Sexby or Silius Titus. Cromwell is considered a tyrant equal to Caligula and Nero - the people must rise up & rid them selves of such a despot and tyrannicide can not be regarded as an act of murder. The second work published in 1797 is based upon the 'The Syracusan Tyrant or the Life of Agathocles' by Richard Perrinchief originally published in 1661 an attack on Oliver Cromwell presented as a biography of Agathocles. Both works probably relating to Thermidor & the the overthrow of revolutionary radical Maximilien Robespierre & a retreat from more radical goals and strategies during a revolution. no publisher stated, Lugduni [ ie Paris ] - Jacob L'Aîne, Rue Philosophie N°6, Orleans hardcover

Folio. 290 x 230 mm. Printed text in various types and illustration in various media all on various paper stock in various formats final leaf with justification and colophon. The édition de tête in the deluxe magnetic binding of one of Susan Allix's most extraordinary inventive capricious and whimsical artist books. From the edition limited to 24 numbered copies signed and numbered by Allix in pencil with this one of 8 from the édition de tête in the deluxe binding.Allix's detail regarding the book taken from the colophon is instructive: 'Authors: old or unknown. / Typefaces: various but including Grotesque Gill Granby and Gallia with Caslon ENgravers Roman & altered and un-altered wood letter. / Papers: various including Arches Somerset Zerkall. / Printing: by hand by letterpress; with new intaglio plates and lino-cuts and old printer's blocks.'Also included inserted loose is the prospectus for the book a sheet folded in three 210 x 98 mm folded with printed text recto only together with the price list which also gives detail of the price for 'Pagoda Memories'. 'On a nonsensical scale this book is not deeply nonsensical. It looks like a book; it has pages that turn conventionally and its contents are not gibberish. Most of the words have been around for many years some so long their authors have been forgotten. But they are set in a variety of arrangements using more typefaces than are usually expected in one book. There is a new piece of punctuation I invented some woodletter I altered and some old printers' blocks reprinted . The initial idea . was for the reader to be able to do more than turn the pages; to be able to move or change images. Small pictures on the binding would be turned or re-located over others by the use of magnets. As the results of this were not intended to be serious they would be accompanied by some nonsensical words . The different sizes shapes and tones of the various papers used sustain a vitality in the flow of pages while the limited colour scheme of terracotta red and cream unifies the collection of odd puzzling or humorous verses and extracts.' From Susan Allix's text from the prospectus for the book. (Susan Allix). unknown
