Fisher, Irving
The Money Illusion
pp. xv, [i] 245. Index. First printing. "Aims to show how unstable in buying power are all monetary units, including the dollar; what hidden causes produce that instability; what harm results, although ascribed to other causes; and what are the various remedies which have been tried or proposed. The purpose is not to propose any one remedy as the best but to put the problem to the reader, especially to the business reader." - Preface. Very light wear to original olive cloth. Dust soiling to top edge. Binding sound. Several faint pencil erasures to contents. Dust jacket not included. A remarkably well-preserved copy. Stable Money - A History of the Movement
Stable Money Association gift bookplate inside front board is signed by Irving Fisher, James Rand, Jr., and Frederic A. Delano. "The present book is intended to be not so much a history of [monetary] catastrophes, due to unstable money and endured by unsuspecting millions subject to the money illusion, but rather a history of the efforts of a few to remedy or prevent such catastrophies." - xxi. FITZHERBERT John or Anthony
Surveyinge. Anno Domini 1567
Title within architectural woodcut border incorporating the date "1534." Largely printed in black letter. 67 leaves 8 pp. Small 8vo antique calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe spine gilt red leather lettering pieces on spine. London: Printed by H. Wykes 1567. An early edition of the first text on surveying printed in English. The first edition was printed by Richard Pynson in 1523; all early editions are rare as copies were used to death. Our copy is most unusual as it is fine and large with a number of lower edges uncut. Fitzherbert's book is concerned primarily with giving instruction to land stewards and overseers of the manor. The authorship of this work has long been disputed: was it Anthony Fitzherbert ca. 1470-1538 judge and legal writer or his older brother John d. 1531 The current scholarship supports John Fitzherbert as the more likely author. The book is "addressed to the landed interest and is an explanation of the laws relating to manors. Fitzherbert sets forth the relation between the landlord and the tenant with observations on their respective moral rights and mutual obligations to each other. The author is also concerned with the best means of developing and improving an estate to the advantage of both the lord and the tenant. "As defined by Fitzherbert the duties and functions of the surveyor were many and varied. In the preface he states that the surveyor should prepare his findings in a small book or put them on a large piece of parchment. This parchment or book should show the 'buttes' and 'bounds' of all the holdings as well as the leases grants and tenures. Along with this information he should state the number of buildings and their location and give a description of the lands specifying whether they are meadow grainland or woodland and by whom held. He should also record the value of all properties along with their rents and fines. The author then goes into considerable detail in giving the form for the preparation of this information. "The author states that the word 'surveyor' is from the French signifying an overseer and that the surveyor must appraise and make recommendations to the lord of the manor."-Richeson English Land Measuring to 1800: Instruments and Practices pp. 33-34. Fine copy. ❧ Fussell I p. 6-"contains a great deal of matter of service to farmers in particular as well as to the agricultural community in general." ODNB. hardcover books

Fleuret, Fernand and/or Emile Henriot (Gaston-Louis Vuitton)
Eloge de la plaquette
Paris: Les presses de l'Hôtel de Sagonne / Société des Bibliophiles Les Plaquettes 1939. First and only edition. THE EXTRAORDINARILY RARE FIRST PUBLICATION of a grand total of two OF THE SOCIETE DE BIBLIOPHILES "LES PLAQUETTES" AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF FRENCH PRE-WAR FINE AVANT-GARDE TYPOGRAPHIC PRINTING. 2 blank leaves; 27 pp. This bibliophile society was conceived by Gaston-Louis Vuitton in 1929 and by 1932 it had 57 members but hadn't yet published anything. In that year it lost all of its funds when its bank went belly up. The Society got rolling again in 1938 and finally printed this gorgeous book in 1939. The text of course is about booklets and their history in France and in the world. Shortly after this book was printed World War II and the German Occupation put a final end to this Bibliophile Society: its only other publication was an equally rare edition of St Francis' "Cantique du soleil" printed in 1943. Fleuret died in 1945. Notable avant-garde typographical design on cover. Edition limited to 111 numbered copies but much rarer as few if any copies were ever actually distributed to the members of the Société beautifully printed with huge margins on fine Montval laid paper. Folio. Publisher's wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED FINE AND BRIGHT LIKE NEW WITH NO DEFECTS. Original paper knife laid in. An incredible survival even more so in such pristine condition. The only copy in WorldCat is the one in the Bibliothèque Nationale.

Les presses de l'Hôtel de Sagonne / Société des Bibliophiles Les Plaquettes paperback

FOBES, Peres (or Perez)
A Sermon preached before His Excellency Samuel Adams Esq.

SERMON CLAIMING REPUBLICANISM DIVINELY INSTITUTED

first edition 8vo. in fours 4 5-42 2 blankpp. large ornamental headpiece on p.5 later half dark tanned roan marbled sides smooth spine direct lettered in gilt small closed tears or cuts no loss at upper margin of the first two leaves repaired on versos joints little rubbed very good fresh copy.

ESTC w29303 locating copies only in BL and O outside of the U.S.A.
Forbes 1742-1812 was the Pastor of the church in Raynham President pro-tem of Brown University and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He seems to have specialised in sermons on public occasions; in 1784 he preached at the execution for burglary of one John Dixon.
This sermon reflects a key moment in the politics of the young Republic and the special political character of Massachusetts. George Washington who was in the middle of his final term as President was attempting to hold the balance between two political forces the Federalists who had created the Union and the Democratic- Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson who stressed states' rights and libertarian principles. Behind the disputes about domestic issues lay important philosophical disagreements. The Federalists were distinctly lukewarm about the French Revolution and the whole idea of democracy; their opponents accused them of being aristocratic and royalist in their aspirations. In foreign policy this led the Federalists to sympathise with England against France while the Democratic- Republicans held the reverse view. Washington while officially non-partisan was psychologically drawn to the Federalist position and went over openly to them after his Presidency ended. This led to bitter criticism of him by Jefferson and his party.
Massachusetts was the strongest centre of Federalism indeed the Party survived there long after it had collapsed in the rest of the country. The Governor Samuel Adams a cousin of the 2nd President John Adams was a Federalist. His career illustrates that revolutionary fervour against English rule was not necessarily associated with social radicalism. He was one of the earliest separatists and drafted the Massachusetts constitution and the Bill of Rights. He was an organiser of the Boston Tea Party.
Fobes' sermon takes as its text 2nd. Peter 11 10 & 12 'They despise government - are not afraid to speak evil of dignataries - and things they understand not'. He strongly criticises those who 'speak evil' of governors an obvious reference to the Democratic- Republicans and the idea that government can be carried on if not based on the Christian religion - a specific attack on French influences Deism and Tom Paine. However he qualifies this by referring to the light of liberty kindled in America now shining in France and by claiming that Republicanism is the form of government enjoined by the Bible.
This is an interesting aspect of the Sermon. There are any number of sermons which proclaim that Monarchy is the Divinely instituted form of government but few which claim this for Republicanism. In France the Republican ideal was associated with the rejection of Christian doctrines and in Ireland the division within the camp of democracy was between those inspired by French ideas and the upholders of legislative independence under the English crown.
In Ireland the American and French Revolutions had very different effects - the triumph of the Volunteers in 1782 and the defeat of the United Irishmen in 1798. This sermon with its innate conservatism helps to cast useful light on the ideological gulf which separated these revolutions which in historical writing have been closely associated.
Printed at the Mercury Press by Young & Minns hardcover
