HORI Motomasa or Kairan
Manuscript on paper entitled on upper cover & first leaf "Aiketsu meiben" "Comprehensive Method of Determining the Pressure Points by Measurement of Bones"
Many fine brush & black ink illus. in the text. 45 folding leaves. 8vo 245 x 170 mm. orig. wrappers wrappers somewhat soiled old stitching. Japan: at end in trans.: "copied in 1807." We learn from the first leaf of the index at the beginning of this manuscript that this is a later copy of a unpublished manuscript by Hori 1725-62 a native of Kyoto whose father was also a prominent physician. Hori began to lecture in 1758 but died early. In this work Hori provides a guide to finding pressure points for acupuncture based on bone measurement. Using bone length measurement for the measurement of acupoints location is called the "bone length method." Hori was remarkable for his unique and influential expansion of this method by incorporating the "twelve zodiac method" in establishing pressure points on the body and determining whether the meridian is open at a certain moment. The text makes many references to the classics of Chinese and Japanese acupuncture. For each of the 14 meridians Hori has listed their pressure points the organs to which they are associated illnesses etc. The fine illustrations depict the meridians and pressure points. Fine copy. Minor staining in upper margin and a little wormed. unknown books

HOSOI, Kotaku (or Chishin or Tomochika)
Illustrated manuscript on paper entitled "Shoryo shuen jojuki" "Comprehensive Survey of Emperors' Mausoleums"
60 double-page two have flaps & several single-page illus. using brush & washes of many colors. 30; 31.5; 31 folding leaves. Three vols. Large 8vo 308 x 210 mm. orig. decorated semi-stiff boards manuscript titles on upper covers new stitching. Japan: Author's Prefaces dated 1699 & 1709; Postfaces by Nobutomo Ban dated 1813 & 1841.<br/> <br/> A most interesting and attractively illustrated manuscript. In the late 17th century the brother of Kotaku Hosoi Chimei d. ca. 1697 a samurai in service to the Koriyama fiefdom visited the Nara area and was saddened by the disrepair of the many mausoleums tombs and tumuli of former emperors. Chimei began a survey of grave sites and his work came to the notice of the shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa 1646-1709 who in 1697 ordered a series of fences to be built around these sites in Yamato no kuni including Nara Kyoto Osaka Hyogo and other areas. These fences - pictured in many of our manuscript's illustrations - were designed to protect the sites from further ruin and robbings.<br/> <br/> Upon Chimei's death his brother Kotaku 1658-1735 calligrapher and Confucian scholar took over the survey which is contained in the first two volumes of our manuscript. At the beginning of the first volume is a list of all the mausoleums recorded by the Hosoi brothers with the names of the emperors and the locations arranged not chronologically but by region. Also included are descriptions of the grave sites and the existing structures. <br/> <br/> Each volume includes an attractive series of double-page brush and color-wash illustrations of the 35 actual sites. In the second volume two of the illustrations contain flaps under which are shown the interiors of the stone burial chambers. Measurements are given along with details of ownership. Most notable is a fine double-page illustration of the famous Takamatsuzuka circular tomb.<br/> <br/> The third volume is an addendum written by Nobutomo Ban 1773-1846 Confucian scholar of kokugaku the study of Japanese history and samurai retainer who was famous for the quality of his historical research especially in archeology and religious studies. In this volume there are 25 fine double-page illustrations in brush and color wash and some black & white diagrams of more mausoleums tombs and tumuli mostly outside of Yamato no kuni including the former provinces of Ise Sado Harima Satsuma Osumi Kawachi and others. Ban's explanatory text accompanies the illustrations.<br/> <br/> In the first two volumes Ban has added further notes in red ink regarding other archeologists' researches and reports from local governments.<br/> <br/> Fine copy preserved in a chitsu. Some worming occasionally touching a character or illustration.<br/> <br/> ⧠Edgren Catalogue of the Nordenskiöld Collection 1980 490. The Imperial Household Agency Library Shoryobu owns a rather similar manuscript. unknown

With only the foundation completed the site became known as "Villard's Ruins" and the bodies of two murder victims were found there before construction resumed. George B. Hoyt [or Hoit], Alonzo
Civil War Letter
1862. Near Fine. Interesting content in this Maine Infantry Civil War Letter of almost 4 full pages written in a clear hand from Beaufort South Carolina and dated Aug. 22 1862. 25 cm. Envelope not present. The writer probably a Lieutenant references colored negro troops from Connecticut and gives a long opinion on how the north should win the war with the resources at its disposal. He also mentions troop misconduct at a "Negro Meeting: "Last night one of my sergeants attended a "Negro Meeting: in company with a few men belonging to the 6th Connecticut Vols. and as they had been drinking whiskey rather freely they thought to show their smartness by breaking in doors and windows of the meeting house and by kicking up a row generally. The sergeant was arrested and will probably be tried by a Court Martial. If he is found guilty I hope he will be punished to the full extent of the law. The sergeant George J. Card is quite young and smart and I have tried to make a man of him but it is of no use -- it can't be done. unknown

China: 1807.<br/> <br/> A rare and important edition of this notable text; the sixth volume contains the valuable commentary and notes of Dunren Zhang 1754-1834 Qing scholar mathematician historian and book collector.<br/> <br/> After the death of Emperor Wu in 87 B.C. his successor summoned to the capital scholars from throughout the empire to discuss the most important problems of the day. Emperor Wu had “implemented a series of centralized economic measures to support his territorial expansion particularly to sustain wars with Xiongnu a confederation of nomadic tribes from Central Asia. For example the state monopolized salt iron and liquor industries; operated nationwide transportation facilities; and ran retail businesses. After the emperor died the new emperor gathered his officials and more than sixty Confucian literati to reassess these measures. The consultation turned into a lengthy debate not only on economic issues but also on topics such as agriculture border defense diplomacy legality and Confucianism…<br/> <br/> “The debate was later reconstructed under the title Yan tie fan by a Confucian bureaucrat-scholar Huan Kuan who consulted both living debaters and the historical record. The text delineates the debate in sixty episodes spanning over several days. In each episode the debaters focus on a specific issue that emerges during the debate.†You “Building Empire through Argumentation†369.<br/> <br/> As a result of the debates the monopolies on salt and iron were briefly abolished but were soon resumed only to be abolished again after the overthrow of Emperor Wang Mang in 23 A.D.<br/> <br/> “The text of this book the Yantielun has been brought in the shape of a dialogue between the opponents. Except the state monopolies the text also touches political questions of the time like the power of the nomad federation of the Xiongnu in the north or the general style of politics as a ‘rule of the law’ versus ‘rule by virtue.’ Huan Kuan’s book is an important document about the internal discussions about political affairs during the Former Han period" ChinaKnowledge.de online.<br/> <br/> Fine set preserved in a slightly worn hantao.<br/> <br/> <br /> <br> <br> References<br /> <br> <br> ChinaKnowledge.de<br /> <br> <br> Wagner Donald B. HUET Jean-Baptiste (the younger); Benoit-Louis or Jean-Louis PREVOST
Fleurs & fruits des quatre parties du monde desseine par Prévost & gravé par J.B. Huet.
Paris 1837. Folio ca. 35 x 26.5 cm. Dauty Contemporary half sheepskin maroon watered silk sides title in gold on the front board. With an engraved title-page and 11 of 23 engraved botanical prints: 4 showing 5 kinds of fruits each 3 showing 9 types of flowers each and 4 showing flower bouquets. All prints are stipple engravings and coloured by a contemporary hand some parts glazed with egg white. 12 ll. Extremely rare botanical print series showing both European and exotic fruits and flowers engraved by Jean-Baptiste Huet the younger 1772-1852 after designs of Benoît-Louis Prévost 1735-1804 or Jean-Louis Prévost 1760-1810. It also includes four plates showing bouquets from Europe America Asia and Africa. Only one complete copy is known at the Bibliothèque nationale de France we have traced no copy in sale or auction records and it is not mentioned in the usual botanical bibliographical works. The BnF copy is described in the Inventaire du fonds français après 1800 where the series consists of 23 prints issued all together under this title. The BnF and the IFF date the work ca. 1837-1839 but it is more likely that it is ca. 1837-1838 as Dauty died in 1838 and he printed at Rue de Bibliothèque no. 16 only in 1827 and 1835-1838. The BnF ascribes the designs for the prints to Benoît-Louis Prévost but Jean-Louis Prévost remains a possibility for he produced another famous print series of flowers and fruits in the same style of stipple engravings Collection des fleurs et fruits 1805.With a contemporary inscription "A M.elle Vincent" on the first free endleaf dedicating it to or belonging to the famous French 19th-century botanical painter Henriette Vincent 1786-1834 who was a student of Gerard van Spaendonck and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Head and foot of the spine damaged and spine slightly worn boards a little rubbed edges slightly worn corners bumped. Some light browning and foxing throughout title-page a little more browned and with a light marginal water stain. Lacking 12 plates according to IFF. Otherwise in good condition. An extremely rare botanical print series vividly hand-coloured.l BnF FRBNF40503621; IFF Inventaire du fonds français après 1800 Huet p. 518; not in Nissen BBI; Pritzel; Stafleu & Cowan. hardcover
