Oblong 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content with log entries more or less statistical on all the versos and pictures and/or original drawings mostly mounted on 58 rectos with some additional loose material. 129 numbered leaves in all. Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album with some emphasis on sports including also fishing foxhunting and sailing but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa with photos of native tribesmen ostriches a hut Cecil Rhodes house etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored pencil pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes these sometimes done directly onto the page. Most charming are the comical illustrations of anthropomorphic foxes. Sepia photos are of the country estates their stately homes and rural settings of the hunts as well as the people involved -- the hosts and guests during these country weekends. Many but by no means all of the photos have captions helpfully identifying the participants or the locations. And the log proper provides the names of those participating in the shooting and often what would now be regarded as obscenely large kills. Among the many aristocrats and wealthy in the photographs and/or logs are Lady Randolph Churchill Jennie Churchill Arthur Balfour Lady Minto Mary the famous 4th Countess Henry Lascelles the 5th Earl of Harewood the 5th Earl of Carnavon of King Tut fame as well as the owner of the castle used in Downton Abbey Baron Rothschild Lord de Grey Lord Ashburton Prince Murat the Duke of Buccleuch Prince Duleep de Singh Lord Rosebery and on and on. Country homes include Longleat Greystoke Castle the Hirsel Highcliffe Castle etc. Alexander McDonnell was a son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and a clerk in the House of Lords. Obviously he was very well connected and surely very popular among the upper echelons of English society back then. And we would note that many of the most illustriously titled have frequent entries here; what we have here is a window into a cohesive social network it is our sense. Condition: morocco binding has moderate to heavy wear along edges some scuffs on the boards and spine. The leaves can have a waviness the result of the interaction of the mounted material upon the leaves. A few photos are loose. There is a little bit of a scrappy quality to the book as befitting a log book that was partially turned into something much more and this quality is part of its charm as well. <br /><br /> books

The uncommon sale catalogue of the collections formed by the founder of the famous Viennese music publisher. Originally from Lucca Mechetti c. 1745-1811 encountered financial troubles and was forced to sell his collection of thousands of items primarily Italian prints and paintings. In the introduction Mechetti highlights certain pieces in his collection which was apparently not for sale by auction but rather private contract. Pages 113-20 describe a large library rich in books on the arts and history. Nice copy. This copy was inscribed on the inside front wrappers to the amateur geologist Baron de Beroldingen see Zittel. Original manuscript autograph document signed by Mehmed Said Pasha sent to Trabzon Vilayat Ordu Kaza Hasbamane Nahiya local manager faziletlu 'Mehmed Ali Sevki Beyefendi'. 335x20 cm. Folded. 1 p. In Ottoman script. Mehmed Said Pasha was an Ottoman monarchist senator statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis. He supported the CUP the political party which came to power after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. His origin comes from 'Sebazâde family' from Ankara. He became first secretary to Sultan Abdul Hamid II shortly after the Sultan's accession and is said to have contributed to the realizations of his majesty's design of concentrating power in his own hands; later he became successively minister of the interior and then governor of Bursa reaching the high post of grand vizier in 1879. He was grand vizier seven more times under Abdul Hamid II and once under his successor Mehmed V. He was known for his opposition to the extension of foreign influence in Turkey. n 1896 he took refuge at the British embassy in Constantinople and though then assured of his personal liberty and safety remained practically a prisoner in his own house. He came into temporary prominence again during the revolution of 1908. On 22 July he succeeded Mehmed Ferid Pasha as grand vizier but on the 6 August was replaced by the more liberal Kâmil Pasha at the insistence of the Young Turks. Also during 1908 Mehmed Said Pasha bought the famed Istanbul arcade in the Beyoglu Pera district today known as Çiçek Pasaji "Flower Passage". The modern name became common in the 1940s; during Mehmed Said Pasha's ownership in the 1900s and 1910s the arcade was known as Sait Pasa Pasaji "Said Pasha Passage". During the Italian crisis in 1911-12 he was again called to the premiership. He was again removed from power by the Savior Officers who backed the Freedom and Accord Party Liberal Union against the Committee of Union and Progress and replaced by a new cabinet supported by the Officers and the Freedom and Accord Party. The objective of the book is exploring (through careful and rigorous archive research) the scenario of Italian twentieth-century jewellery by delving into the evolution of this art through chronological sectors illustrating different aspects of this production - approximately from 1900 until 1990. Various chapters in the book are dedicated to Neo-Historism, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, to the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and ultimately from the 1960s to the 1990s while highlighting the difference and uniqueness of Italian jewels. Alongside the works, many preparatory drawings still preserved in the archives of prestigious jeweller and private collections that have generously granted permission to consult these precious and mostly unexplored documents will be published in this book. In many cases, this will envisage the actual discovery of the identity of this great Italian production of millennial tradition. Renowned names will be present: Mario Buccellati, Alfredo Ravasco, the Musy family from Turin, the Petochi family from Rome. Particular attention will be paid to the 1960s and 1970s as they marked the birth of the new Bulgari style. The review will be presenting works created by the jeweller Mario Masenza in collaboration with painters and sculptors such as Afro, Cannilla, Capogrossi and Uncini, and the "new jewels" initiated by the brothers Arnaldo and Gio Pomodoro. During the 1980s and 1990s we have to mention the creations by Pomellato, Gio Caroli and Riviere. The book comes to a conclusion with some in-depth studies of manufacturing centres of excellence in the Italian jewellery sector, such as Valenza, Vicenza, Arezzo and Padua School. The book comes to a close with the biographies of all the Italian jewellers and goldsmiths mentioned within, in addition to 350 unprecedented images including precious archive documents: sketches, photographs of models wearing vintage jewellery, colour/black and white photographs of jewellery specimens.
