Book condition: In very good condition with light soiling and rubbed and bumped extremities. Yellow endsheets are soiled and have a few spots and a contemporary bookplate. A very small piece of the front pastedown has been carefully cut away from foot near hinge. Pages are moderately foxed and offset. Scarce in original cloth P. Hawker's ""Instructions to Young Sportsmen in All that Relates to Guns and Shooting"" includes in this ninth edition chapters on the hunting and shooting of North America. Important names like William T. Porter and John J. Audubon contribute stories descriptions and advice on such things as ""Barking Off Squirrels"" and ""The Canvas-Back Duck"". Publisher's dark green boards lettered in gilt to the spine and front board with black design to the front board. The half-title has a printed statement that the book is Presented with the Compliments of Berry Brothers & Co Wine Merchants who were established in the Seventeenth Century at 3 St James' St. London S.W. In the early part of the twentieth century Berry Brothers & Co was run by Francis L Berry and Charles Walter Berry known as "Walter". This copy is INSCRIBED BY FRANCIS L BERRY ON 21ST JULY 1913: "J. W. Burdick Esq/ of Pittsburg. pa./ with the compliments of/ Berry Bros & Co/ London/ & the personal regards of/ Francis L. Berry/ 21st July 1913". It is likely that the dedicatee of this copy was Joel Wakeman Burdick 1853-1925 who helped develop the American railroad system in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Superb provenance and exceedingly scarce with these attributes. In the early part of the twentieth century Berry Brothers & Co had a Price List of Wines Etc. for the USA. NB: In 1914 Hugh Rudd joined the firm: Rudd was a wine expert from Norwich a then-prominent wine region as well as being a true connoisseur of German wines. First edition presentation copy to the typist of the work inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "This copy of the Life of Grenfell George is presented to Miss Ada Goodman by its author in faithful appreciation of the obliging & expert manner in which she accomplished the somewhat difficult task of type-writing the manuscript for the press. May 1909". George Grenfell 1849-1906 was a missionary and explorer who was awarded the Patron's Medal by the Royal Geographical Society for his detailed account of his travels through Congo and Cameroon. Following Grenfell's death in Basoko a town on the Congo River the Committee of the Baptist Missionary Society commissioned Grenfell's former classmate and friend Rev. George Hawker 1857-1932 to write this biography. Hawker heavily relied on accounts from Grenfell's friends and family. This included Grenfell's sister Mary Rowe and his second wife Rosana Edgerley who accompanied him on his travels. Loosely inserted is an advertising slip for the Congo Reform Association. Octavo. Photogravure frontispiece with tissue guard 32 half-tone plates colour folding map illustrations to text 8 pp. of advertisements to rear. Original green bead-grain cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt Royal Geographical Society's Patron's medal in gilt to front cover edges trimmed. Cloth clean extremities slightly bumped and rubbed gilt bright foxing to edges and outer leaves occasionally affecting margins browning to endpapers a couple of small tears to folding map not affecting printed area.
