Signed in pencil titled in the plate. 6 1/4 x 4 3/16 inches 159 x 120 mm. Plate 8 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches sheet. With the label of The Print Rooms Inc. affixed to the mat. Two printing creases in the left and right margins not extending into the image else in excellent condition. ScarceOf 180 etchings catalogued by Zigrosser 103 were done by Marin in Europe between 1905 and 1910. Of these many were not editioned or exist only as trial proofs. Of the ones which were editioned the editions are often very small in many cases under 10 but some were done in editions of 25 to 50 one the Meaux Cathedral was printed by the Gazette de Beaux Arts in a large edition probably about 500. All of the European prints are fairly traditional in treating the subjects realistically but Marin's turn to Modernism is evident in Zigrosser 104 an etching of the Brooklyn Bridge the first print he did after returning to America in 1911. unknown

Laid in photograph and newsprint portrait. <p>First edition limited to 400 copies this copy number 343. Inscribed by Marin on the half-title: “To Stanley Clifford write some more John Marin.†A volume of letters written to Alfred Stieglitz between 1910 and 1930 reflecting the close relationship between the artist and the gallerist. Stieglitz was a crucial figure early in Marin’s career giving him his first one-man exhibition in 1909 at gallery 291 and providing him with financial support. Many of the letters included here were written from Stonington and West Point Maine. A photograph of Marin’s cottage at Cape Split Maine taken by Stanley Clifford in the fall of 1950 and so inscribed on the verso is laid in. Clifford was a Deer Isle Maine antiquarian bookseller and a friend of Marin.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>CONDITION: Near fine.</p> New York Privately Printed for An American Place, 1931 unknown

All of the European prints are fairly traditional in treating the subjects realistically but Marin's turn to Modernism is evident in Zigrosser 104 an etching of the Brooklyn Bridge the first print he did after returning to America in 1911. unknown

Paris: Gazette de Beaux Arts 1907. Etching with aquatint on cream wove paper 11 1/2 x 8 7/8 inches 229 x 225 mm narrow left-hand margin with a full margin with a deckle edge on the right as issued. Two small spots of archival canvas tape at the top right and left corners recto and several small areas of light unobtrusive discoloration in the margins otherwise in good condition.
