Engraved pictorial masonic membership certificate on vellum accomplished in manuscript electing Nathaniel Wade to the Unity Lodge in Ipswich signed at the bottom by Isaiah Thomas as Grand Master
Massachusetts 1805. Signed by Thomas at center on the pedestal. Countersigned by Grand Secretary John Procter. 17-1/2x13 inches. Fading to the manuscript light soiling and foxing. Signed by Thomas at center on the pedestal. Countersigned by Grand Secretary John Procter. 17-1/2x13 inches. Isaiah Thomas served as grand master of Massachusetts from 1803 to 1805 with the present certificate dated A.L. 5805 i.e. Anno Lucius being the Gregorian year plus 4000. The allegorical certificate engraved by Hawksworth shows the figures of Wisdom Athena wearing a helmet Strength Hercules wearing a lion skin and holding crossed keys and Beauty Venus trailing a rose vine surrounding a lettered tablet all upon a large pedestal with Masonic symbols at the base and with an all seeing eye above. The certificate was issued to Nathaniel Wade likely Col. Nathaniel Wade 1749-1826 who led a company of Minute Men who responded to the Lexington Alarm and served in the Continental Army or his son Nathaniel Wade Jr. 1778-1843. unknown

Heroic Deeds of Noble Master Masons During the Civil War From 1861 to 1865 in the U.S.A.
Pueblo CO: The Franklin Press. 1916. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. This volume written by Jewella Civil War soldier had started the process of becoming a Mason but was interrupted two weeks later by joining the Union army in 1862. After serving in the winter of 1865/66 he became Master Mason. The book contains the stories of soldiers who when captured by the Confederates or the Federal Army once they were known to be a Mason were treated as brothers and well cared for. Cleary Jewell had solicited these stories as they are mostly signed by the former soldier/Mason who experienced these considerations. The book also contains a brief autobiography of Jewell as well as some thoughts on Masonry war and related subjects. The Masonry scholar Michael A Halleran wrote in the journal "Heredom" suggesting the Masonry affiliation aided prisoners on both sides of the conflict. Jewell's book is considered one of the earliest works addressing the Freemasonry's role in the Civil War though Halleran does criticize it for being "anecdotal." See volume 15 2007 of "Heredom." Westervelt presented an original petition to Newburgh Lodge 309 asking if a new lodge could be organized in Newburgh “believing that the best interest of Masonry would be best subserved thereby.â€</p> <br /> <p>A charter was granted to Hudson River Lodge 607 on June 8 1866. Forty-six signatures are appended to the document. Many are designated “true†and a few are designated “non affiliatedâ€. David A. Scott was voted master; G. Frederick Wiltsie senior warden; Samuel Stanton junior warden and John Alsdorf as first secretary. </p> <br /> <p>John L. Westervelt 1826-after 1880 the petitioner was a silversmith whose specialty was repairing and replating Gorham objects. He married Catherine Gorham of New York.  “After the Lodge had been declared open the Master arose and on behalf of Bro. John L. Westervelt presented to the Lodge a full set of solid silver jewels for the use of the offices. The following resolution was then offered and adopted unanimously: Resolved That the thanks of this Lodge be and are hereby tendered to Brother John L. Westervelt for the very beautiful set of jewels which he has so generously presented to the Lodge.â€Â History of Hudson River Lodge.</p> <br /> <p>Charles Estabrook 1823-1900 bookstore owner and librarian at Newburgh Free Library signed as did Chancy M. Leonard mayor of Newburgh who died in 1874. Another jeweler and silversmith Thomas W. Purdy ca. 1830-after 1880 also signed. David A. N.p.: Privately Printed 1872. First edition. 8vo 20x14cm 3 98pp with 50pp consisting of 13 separately printed Pike poems and "In Memoriam Albert Pike" from 1898 bound in at rear. Lengthy presentation inscription from Pike to Capt. Fayette Hewitt and dated in 1872 Washington on separate leaf in front; and opposite a lengthy presentation inscription from Hewitt to a J.H. Johnson in 1896 Frankfort KY memorializing his friendship with Pike and gifting the book. Additionally Pike has briefly inscribed 2 of the poems bound in at rear to Hewitt one dated in 1870. Bound for Hewitt in full gilt-ruled black morocco binding spine and turn-ins tooled in gilt gilt lettering on spine marbled endpapers g.e. Spine ends joints and corners rubbed. Few of the poems at rear with light transmittal folds. <br /> <br /> Tremendous presentation copy of this privately printed collection of mythological poems from the Confederate General and architect of the Southern Scottish Rite Albert Pike 1809-1891. This copy presented to his close friend and subordinate Captain Fayette Hewitt 1831-1909 who served under Pike during the Civil War including the period of Pike's treaty negotiations in Indian Territory. Contemporary accounts from Pike on Hewitt illustrate the foundations of their relationship:<br /> <br /> "He daily deserved praise and won the love and admiration of all who knew him. He became as dear to me as my own sons. Brave courteous amiable unassuming obliging and kind to every one firm in the performance of duty—a nobler gentleman or better soldier never lived."<br /> <br /> <br /> This association is further deepened by the volume itself which Pike inscribed to “Capt. Fayette Hewitt†and which Hewitt preserved for over two decades before presenting it onward in 1896. Expanded with a substantial group of privately circulated poems including one inscribed in 1870 the volume documents a longstanding association between the two men later reinforced by Hewitt’s memorial presentation.  L. Boyden in his Bibliography of the Writings of Albert Pike 1921 records many of these bound-in poems as separately issued printings spanning from 1859 through the early 1870s with titles including "Cruiskeen Lan" "The Light of Days Long Past" "After the Midnight Cometh Morn" "The Fine Arkansas Gentleman" and others.  <br /> <br /> In all this volume represents a singular object at the intersection of the Civil War Southern fraternal culture and the personal legacy of Albert Pike preserved through his wartime friend and subordinate Fayette Hewitt.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> . Edition originale et unique, déjà qualifiée de rare en 1834, de cet ouvrage en français (seul le titre est en latin). Cet ouvrage est un compte-rendu très critique du Convent général des maçons qui eut lieu le 15 juillet 1782 à Wilhelmsbad (auquel Beyerlé n'avait pas participé). Il fut traduit en allemand par Knigge (Illuminati). Notre exemplaire porte plusieurs notes autographes d'André Joseph Etienne Lerouge (1766-1833) et en particulier celle en garde : « Le texte est de Beyerlé, de Nancy, l'un des membres du Directoire préfectoral de Lorraine. Lerouge ». Les deux autres petites notes, p.125 et p.127, sont des références ajoutées (illisibles). 6 exemplaires sont conservés en France : BnF (*2), Nancy, Besançon, Lyon et Le Mans. Aucun exemplaire passé récemment sur le marché. Provenances : André Joseph Etienne Lerouge (1766-1833), vente en 1835, n°34. L'ouvrage est déjà signalé comme rare dans la notice et il est aussi indiqué dans la liste des ouvrages d'une « excessive rareté » ; Paul Serbait (?) De Recquignies (Nord, France), avec son ex-libris manuscrit sur le titre. Demi-basane à coins, dos lisse, pièce de titre. Petite découpé sur la page de titre (en haut à droite). Un mors légèrement affaibli en tête, beau papier légèrement jauni. Coutures légèrement détendues. Très rare ouvrage provenant d'une des plus belles collections maçonniques du XIXe siècle.

2 ouvrages reliés en un volume petit in-8 (162 x 92 mm), plein veau marbré de l'époque, dos à nerfs orné de compartiments fleuronnés au fer à la grenade et cloisonnés, filet d'encadrement à froid sur les plats, roulette sur les coupes, doublures et gardes de papier dominoté fleuri, tranches rouges. 1- Edition originale de premier tirage selon Stoddard, très rare. Véritable credo sensualiste et matérialiste, "L’École de la Volupté" est une œuvre à la fois philosophique et libertine, l'une des productions les plus subversives des "Lumières radicales" qui justifie l’appréciation de Sade sur La Mettrie: "Le célèbre La Mettrie avait raison quand il disait qu'il fallait se vautrer dans l'ordure comme des porcs et qu'on devait trouver, comme eux, du plaisir dans les derniers degrés de la corruption" (marquis de Sade, 'Histoire de Juliette', IX, p. 115). L'auteur y développe une éthique du plaisir et du bonheur individuel, un "art de jouir" affranchi de toute morale religieuse ou sociale. Il critique les principaux systèmes "libertins" de son temps et se livre à une étude de la notion de "volupté", ses causes et ses effets, illustrée d’exemples "pratiques", en s’affirmant ennemi de toute affectation en la matière. Il conclut ainsi: "Tous les appétits, toutes les passions, tous les sens, tant internes qu'externes & en un mot tous les mouvemens de notre machine conduisent à la l'amour & de l’amour à la volupté (…). Le plaisir est le plus bel apanage de l'homme. Qui s'y refuse, viole les premières loix de son origine, & l'intention du Créateur". (Stoddard, 'La Mettrie, Bibliographical Inventory', n°22). Seulement 6 exemplaires sont dénombrés par WorldCat dans le monde. Une édition qui semble être une contrefaçon de mauvaise qualité, à la date de 1746, est conservée à la BnF: c'est l'unique exemplaire à cette date recensé dans le monde. - 2- Edition originale de ce programme utopique pour un gouvernement de la prostitution. Sous forme d'un code en 41 articles, le texte organise avec minutie le classement des établissements de prostitution et des courtisanes par classe et par ordre, leur accompagnement social (santé, prise en charge des enfants…), la police, les normes vestimentaires et de comportements, l'environnement culturel (lectures), etc. Le public pourra obtenir des "billets de jouissance" auprès de bureaux spécialisés. Statistiques et budget détaillés en annexe ("Bordereau de dépense et recette", p.76-81). Publié anonymement, l'ouvrage est attribué à Jean-Pierre Moet (1721-1806), ministre d'État et secrétaire du comte de Saint-Florentin. Polyglotte, se revendiquant encyclopédiste, il s'adonna aux sciences occultes, traduisit Swedenborg et composa plusieurs ouvrages véritablement féministes. Il est également à l'origine de sociétés "paramaçonniques", qui furent accusées de débauche, en tête desquelles "l'Ordre de la Félicité" société dans laquelle ce projet s'inscrit (cf. A. Dinaux, 'Les sociétés badines, bachiques', I, p. 304 sq. et J.-L. Quoy-Bodin, "Autour de deux sociétés secrètes libertines sous Louis XV: l'Ordre de la Félicité et l'Ordre Hermaphrodite", 'Revue Historique', juil.-sept. 1986, t. 276, fasc. 1, p. 57-84). Bel exemplaire, frais, très bien relié à l'époque.

Il s’agit du texte d’accueil d’Emile Loubet, président de la République Française, devant le Suprême Conseil de la Maçonnerie Portugaise lors de son voyage au Portugal en octobre 1905.

Winnipeg Manitoba: The Stovel Company Press 1891. First Edition First Printing. Wrappers. pp. 18 8 1. 12mo. measuring 5.5" x 4". Pebbled maroon stiff cloth covers gilt lettering to the front cover. Comprises of a detailed list of articles governing the operations of the Lodge with sections devoted to: "Rules for Membership" "Contributions and Benefits" "Penalties and Trials" "Elections and Duties of Officers" "Elections" "Sessions" "Length of Terms" "Meetings" "Dues" and much else. The collection further comprises of the following: a Two blank membership forms particular to the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the Province of Manitoba and bearing their insignia on the letterhead; each measuring 8.25" x 5.75". // b Single card printed on stiff card-stock bearing an image in black-and-white bearing caption: "The Proposed Manitoba Odd Fellows Home" measuring 5.25" x 3.5". // c Single remittance receipt in acknowledge of payment from a "H. Dool" to the Union Encampment No. 5 I.O.O.F. Signed in period ink and recording a payment in the amount of $4.00 measuring 7.25" x 4". // d Quarterly Statement dated February 10th 1892 on formal Union Encampment No. 5 stationary addressed to "Hugh Dool" of Merrickville Ontario evidently belonging to the Minnedosa MB chapter of the Manitoba branch of the I.O.O.F. indicating arrears for dues in the amount of $1.00 signed Alex Potter in period ink measuring 8.5" x 5.5". // e Three type-written letters each measuring 10" x 8" from A.W. Shaw A.W. Shaw was the proprietor of Minnedosa Manitoba based automobile dealer and garage A.W. Shaw. He also served as the 29th Grand Master of the Manitoba chapter of the I.O.O.F. on personal business stationary dated March 23rd 1921 April 5th 1922 September 28th 1924 respectively with two of the letters bearing his signature in period ink. The letters often addressed affectionately to an evidently older Hugh Dool discuss in candid tones the author's concern for the recipients' health and well-being. Additionally they discuss plans for the establishment of a new proposed home for the Order including fundraising efforts the poor state of weather affecting the crop yields details of a new electric plant being established in Minnedosa at the time. // f Three hand-written letters measuring 10" x 8" on formal water-marked Minnedosa Lodge No. 10 stationary bearing their crest at head two being blind-stamped with their Lodge marks. Two of the letters are addressed to Hugh Dool and one to M.G. Corbett Secretary of the Balmoral Lodge I.O.O.F No. 28 one a letter of appreciation acknowledging the gift of a family Bible by Hugh Dool to the Minnedosa Lodge the remaining letters discuss financial matters and dues as they related to the recepient Hugh Dool. The letters are dated: March 24th 1908 January 28th 1926 January 14th 1927. // g Two letters one type-written the other hand-written in lovely period ink each measuring 8" x 10" and addressed to Hugh Dool by M.G. Corbett on formal Balmoral Lodge Number 280 stationary indicating a grant of $25.00 to the recipient on behalf of the Minnedosa Lodge dated April 18th 1928 and May 31 1929 respectively. // h Single hand-written receipt for services rendered for "taking down storeroom windows" at the Oddfellows Hall by a Charles Knox for the period of January 12th to June 28th does not indicate a year. A scarce and important archival collection offering detailed insight into one of the earliest Masonic lodges to have been established in the Province of Manitoba. On note of condition: Light edgewear to the cloth extremities of the headline title excepting some light creases where the letters have been folded all articles remain entirely without blemish. Very good to near fine. <br/><br/>The International Order of Oddfellows was instituted in North America in 1819 with the Manitoba Branch being established shortly following the founding of the Province 1870 in 1873. "As settlers arrived in Manitoba they established organizations designed to assist members and their families in times of personal and material need. Some pale spotting and rubbing to boards. Text block toned. Very good. <br /> <br /> Self-published work from Sweney Munson 1860-1945 who worked as a locomotive and steam shovel engineer on the Santa Fe Railroad. Munson spent several months in Russia during WWI building 400 miles of rail from Kem to the Murman coast. <br /> <br /> This work which is signed by the author "Sweney Munson 32° Fort Scott Kansas November 19th 1924" begins by equating the Papcy with the Antichrist spoken of in scripture or "the counterfeit of Jesus." The remainder of the work which is "carefully compiled from Authentic Historical Sources" is presented as a history text book outlining the evils of the Catholic Church from the Crusades to papal persecutions to wars of the inquisition. A large section of the book is devoted to Martin Luther and the beginnings of Protestantism. Munson also includes an extensive chapter on slavery as well as Masonry in the United States and the Papacy's war against it. <br /> <br /> <br /> OCLC locates 7 copies of this controversial publication. . Contraddittorio e inquieto studioso, Odazi (Atri, 1741 - Napoli, 1794) è considerato fra gli economisti napoletani di maggior rilievo nella seconda metà del Settecento. Allievo del Genovesi, la cui cattedra gli sarebbe stata affidata nel 1781, massone, partecipò se pure con indolenza al fermento politico che avrebbe portato nel 1799 alla guerra civile e poi alla Repubblica napoletana. Ma, imprigionato nel ’94, si era ucciso in carcere, in circostanze mai chiarite. In questo suo “dotto studio” O. invoca “contro l’opinione del Galiani, la libertà dei prezzi, col notevole intento di giovare agli umili e, di riverbero, alla prosperità nazionale” (R. di Castiglione, “La massoneria nelle due Sicilie”, Gangemi, 2006, p. 115). A restless and complex scholar, Odazi was considered one of the major neapolitan economists of the second half of XVIII century. A mason, pupil of Genovesi, whose chair he obtained in 1781, he took part in politic stirs that brong in 1799 to civil war in Naples and the to the “Repubblica”. But he was imprisoned and died in jail, probably suicide, in ’94. In this learned work O. claims, against Galiani opinion, the freedom of prices, meaning to benefit the humble classes.
