First edition of this scarce and unusually complete salesman sample catalogue for men’s suits work clothes and evening wear during the Jazz Age. The company known as the “King of Tailors†together with its’ famed subsidiary J.L. Taylor maintained a huge tailoring operation in both Chicago New York and Montreal until after World War II employing hundreds of tailors and seamstresses to fill orders. The catalogues were very expensive to produce and so were most often found in department stores mercantiles and men’s stores which would have these catalogues on the sales floor for two years or more. Sales people were directed to simply clip the corners of samples for out-of-stock and discontinued fabrics but they often chose to remove the entire sample in order to not distract potential customers. The catalogue offers invaluable illustrated historical reference for the colours styles and fabrics during the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Flappers. Most of the colour fashion plates illustrating the available sports suits styles Alconquin Arcady Belleterre The Cherokee Comet Cosmopolitan etc. have elegant backgrounds as well as indicating necessary belts hat styles and linings. In addition there is a plate for evening formal dress such as Prince Albert Tuxedos and of course the appropriate silk linings. The factory buildings in Chicago and New York are still standing and in use with the Chicago building designed by Mundie & Jensen finishing construction with additions in 1922 it exemplified the modern spacious natural light and progress work space of the time now used by the Chicago Art Institute and as condos while the New York edifice was designed by Starrett & Van Vleck and converted to Co-ops in 1980. A wonderful advertising display for Monarch Shirts which originally came out of a Carlton Oregon general store which at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century also sold men’s clothing accessories and shoes. George Bywater Cluett 1838-1912 and Frederick Forrest Peabody 1858-1927 were pioneers in the shirt & replaceable collar industry in Troy NY who created the iconic Arrow brand detachable Collars and shirts. They formed their company from Cluett & Sons to Cluett Peabody & Co. in 1899 and rapidly grew their business by providing women with an easier way to clean their husbands’ stained shirt collars without having to wash the entire shirt. In addition the collars wore out a much faster rate than the rest of the shirts so these replaceable collars would extend the life of the garments. Monarch shirts were famed for their durability and patented their Patent Bound Bosom Shirt which became known to consumers across the country as the Monarch Shirt. In 1905 the company launched the iconic campaign for Arrow Shirts with the famed illustrations by Joseph Leyendecker which ran for over 25 years. Various Cluett divisions maintained offices and showrooms in New York through 2002 and then in 2004 the Arrow Shirt brand was acquired by Phillips-Van Heusen Corp. ‎Original small salesman’s sample oak & glass counter display for Arrow collars preserving two original collars; Leyendecker advertisement for Arrow shirts & collars with Arrow man holding the tiller of a sailboat with young woman companion leaning against the rail looking over her shoulder.‎

‎Troy NY: Arrow Shirt Co./ Cluett Peabody & Co. Inc. ca. 1930; 1955. Quarter-sawn oak salesman sample counter display case 18.75 x 6 x 6 ins. with glass top & front door in back with catch w/ original label at bottom of the display indicating that this case was only to be used for the display of the Company collars preserving two Arrow Shirt Co. Collars some scuffing and wear to label at bottom of case affecting lettering minor wear to sides of case together with original Leyendecker advertisement printed on canvas w/ oak frame 28.5 x 21.5 ins. the piece has been professionally cleaned and mounted on archival foam core and removed from the original bars which were damaging the image and placed back in the oak frame some sunning faint discoloration to upper left margin still remarkable pieces. A wonderful advertising display for Arrow shirts and collars including pre-World War II counter sample case and 1950s promotional ad reproducing one of the famed Leyendecker images. These pieces originally came out of a small men’s clothing shop in Bend Oregon. The Arrow collars grew from the marketing idea by Cluett Peabody & Co. in Troy NY that it gave women an easier way to clean their husbands’ stained shirt collars without having to wash the entire shirt. In addition the collars wore out a much faster rate than the rest of the shirts so these replaceable collars would extend the life of the garments. This style of detachable collars remained popular up until the mid-1930s and largely declined out of use by the end of World War II. Leyendecker 1874-1951 created the Arrow Collar Man which was an advertising campaign that ran from 1905 - 1931 and was perhaps one of the most successful product brands in history. He created 100s of images and many of them are still synonymous with men’s fashion and styles. This advertisement was part of a revived campaign by Arrow Shirt Co. in the 1950s through early 1960s as they revived the nostalgia of the Leyendecker ads and pushed their shirts with soft collars. ‎FASHION WOMEN'S PERIODICAL‎

‎PETIT MESSAGER DES MODES ET LE CONFIDENT REUNIS‎

‎1847. FASHION - WOMEN'S - PERIODICAL LE PETIT MESSAGER DES MODES ET LE CONFIDENT REUNIS: TOME VII NOS. 1-17 22-24; TOME IX NOS. 1-13 15-17. Paris: Imprim. Schneider et Langrand 1847 and 1849. Thirty-six issues illustrated with 72 lovely hand-colored engraved plates of which 33 are by Heloise Leloir and 12 by Laure Colin Noel. Quarto. Text: 27-136169-192; 104113-128121-128 pp. 10 1/4 by 7 in. Nineteenth-century binding: quarter black morocco marbled boards gilt title on spine marbled endpapers. The binding is shelfworn with top joint is starting and lower joint tender. The first issue is missing four text pages; otherwise despite some misleading errors in pagination all text is present. Most issues have a timbre royal mark a French duty stamp on one text page but not on the plates. The plates are generally clean and fresh; however there are a few exceptions: 1. - Both plates in Vol. VII no. 1 have old paper repairs on the inner margin and the top fore-corner of one has been clipped; 2. - The two plates in Vol. VII no. 2 have been trimmed 1/4" shy of the fore-edge of the bookblock; 3. - One plate in Vol. IX no. 15 which is the only horizontal image in the entire volume has been trimmed to the top-edge of the image at the fore-edge. LE PETIT MESSAGER DES MODES was a bi-weekly publication appearing on the 1st and 16th of each month comprised of eight pages of text that was to include 22 engraved plates and 3 large patterns in each six-month period. This volume is bound without any of the large patterns and instead an additional plate has been inserted wherever a pattern is called for. These `extra' plates have been supplied from issues that are not included in this volume. Although most issues are complete with text and appropriate plates together there are twelve instances in this volume including the plates-for-patterns substitutions of plates being misbound or of a plate from another issue replacing the expected plate. And so while the plates are lovely and in very good condition it is for these reasons that the volume is offered as is. unknown‎

‎FASHION 1960s CHANEL STYLED‎

‎Presenting the Davidow Collection. TWELVE BOOKLETS‎

‎New York.: Davidow. 1960-1969. A dozen eight-page sales brochures in color 10.5x 7.75 inches showcasing the Davidow fashions for fall or spring; the twelve brochures each titled "Presenting the Davidow Collection" span the decade from fall 1960 to spring 1969. Small logo of Meier and Frank Co. department store appears on most front overs. The 1969 brochure has creases on the free edge; time-toning at the top of the Spring 1965 brochure; abrasions at bottom of spine of fall 1963 brochure; stains and creases to rear page of the fall 1962 brochure and a 1 x 2 inch water stain on the bottom edge of front cover that causes ripples to the ensuing pages. Remaining brochures in overall good condition. The web site Sports Illustrated Vault provides an archived article on Davidow fashions first published in 1959: "Davidow suits of soft-colored plaids and tweeds are by now an American institution. They have been made and sold in this country for more than 30 years first by William H. Davidow.who started the family business in New York in 1880 with the manufacture of men's shirts and women's skirts. Coats and suits were added to Davidow's collections in the '20s and the firm has made its fame and fortune on the now familiar three-piece ensemble: coat and suit of matching or harmonizing fabrics. The style of these suits changes only subtly from year to year and this seems to be a secret of their charm to the wearer who knows that her outfit will always be recognized as a 'Davidow suit.' In the past five years since Gabrielle Chanel returned to the couture in Paris the Davidows have revived an old connection and have bought and reproduced the designs of Chanel in this country." The Chanel-inspired designs are featured in each of the twelve 60s brochures. In 1970 the Chanel look was displaced when the firm contracted with designer Umberto Manzo to produce a new line called Couture 71; the twelve brochures thus reflect a distinct epoch in the Davidow fashion line. These are uncommon publications of significance to American fashion history; WorldCat doesn't list any library holdings. Brochures overall in very good clean condition with condition issues noted. .
