Cette collection exceptionnelle a été acquise en 2012 par le musée des Arts décoratifs et 3000 de ces boutons, du XVIIIe au XXe siècle, sont présentés pour la première fois au public dans l'exposition. L'objet, d'apparence si modeste et fragile, et ne tenant qu'à un fil, se révèle être un miroir fidèle des convenances sociales, de la production artistique contemporaine ou encore des progrès techniques dans les arts appliqués. Le bouton endosse diverses fonctions utilitaires et décoratives : il apparaît aussi bien en tant qu'insigne, ornement, catalyseur de la pensée d'un artiste ou d'un créateur, que comme signe d'appartenance à un certain milieu social ou professionnel. Le propos se concentre sur le rapport du bouton au vêtement. Bien qu'il ait parfois disparu de certaines de nos tenues contemporaines, le bouton n'a jamais été supplanté par d'autres systèmes de fermeture. Il sculpte la silhouette, donne son rythme à la tenue, sert de point d'équilibre et de déséquilibre. Sa rotondité évoque celle du monde, dans toute sa diversité. Une commande photographique spécifique a été passée pour cet ouvrage : elle rend compte de l'extrême variété des matériaux et des techniques employés dans la création de boutons d'exception (ivoire, nacre, porcelaine, métaux, pierres précieuses.) comme de plus humbles (coquillages, graines, fleurs séchées, cheveux.). Solida ed elegante legatura coeva in mezza pelle, dorsi a nervi con titoli e fregi in oro ai comparti. Legatura firmata. Qualche rada fioritura ed una piccola mancanza alla cuffia superiore di un volume, peraltro esemplare ben conservato, con le tavole in coloritura particolarmente fresca. Opera celebre e non comune munita di un interessante apparato iconografico raffigurante una grande quantità di personaggi atti a mostrare i costumi locali d'ogni parte del mondo.
