The book we now list reflects LIN's great power. In this work Lin Biao is the author and is also pictured with Mao Zedong. It was when Lin reluctantly was recognized officially and was appointed China's second-in-charge in April 1969 date of this work we now offer following the 1st Plenary Session of the 9th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Lin's position as Mao's "closest comrade-in-arms and successor" was recognized when the Party constitution was formally revised to reflect Lin's future succession. At the 9th Central Committee Lin's faction was unquestionably dominant within the Politburo. . As LIN fell from grace his name was to be erased eradicated from the Communist Party China therefore many of his books or places his name appears officially and Lin Biao writings were defaced. Out item's cover shows exactly this issue with a "double pen lining out" LIN Biao's name. This does not detract from the work ! Just Chinese politics as usual !!!! Later LIN abstained from taking an active role in politics after the civil war but became instrumental in creating the foundations for Mao Zedong's cult of personality in the early 1960s. LIN was rewarded for his service to Mao by being named Mao's designated successor during the "Cultural Revolution" from 1966 until his death. . LIN died in September 1971 when his plane crashed in Mongolia following what appeared to be a failed coup to oust Mao. Because little inside information is available to the public on what has been dubbed as the "Lin Biao incident" the exact events preceding Lin's death have been a source of speculation ever since. Following Lin's death he was officially condemned as a traitor by the Communist Party of China. He and Jiang Qing are still considered to be the two "major Counter-revolutionary cliques" blamed by the Communist Party for the excesses of the Cultural Revolution. . LIN BIAO'S PART IN THE "WENHUA DA GEMING" or the "CULTURAL REVOLUTION": . In 1966 Mao appointed LIN as his successor being Vice-Chairman a position Lin hated as he has no or little political interest. Mao was displeased with his idea. Privately Lin had no interest in promoting the "Cultural Revolution" and attended government meetings only when Mao demanded that he do so. LIN's passivity was part of a calculated plan to survive the Cultural Revolution alive and well. . Following the lead of Mao in 1966 LIN directed Red Guards in Beijing to "smash those persons in power who are traveling the capitalist road the bourgeoisie reactionary authorities and all royalists of the bourgeoisie and to forcibly destroy the "four olds": old culture old ideas old customs and old habits. In August 1966 Lin publicly called for a "three-month turmoil" within the PLA and on October 6 Lin's Central Military Commission issued an urgent instruction that all military academies and institutes were to dismiss their classes and allow their students to become fully involved in the Cultural Revolution. Following the orders of this directive officers and commissars were expelled from their positions and some were beaten to death. . Students at Chinese military academies followed LIN's instructions to rebel against their senior officers breaking into the offices of Lin's National Commission for Defense Science to abduct one of the department's directors and claiming LIN's deputy chief of staff Li Tianyu whom students accused of disciplining them. The students "overthrew" General Xiao Hua the head of the PLA's Political Department since the previous July and went on to purge 40 other top officers working under him in the Political Department most of which died in prison. . LIN continued to support the Red Guards until May 1967 when Mao accepted Zhou Enlai's appeals to moderate their radical activity through military intervention. LIN in moderated some of the most radical activity within the PLA; but from 1967 to 1969 80000 officers were purged 1169 of which died from torture starvation or execution. . After 1966 LIN's few personal political initiatives were efforts to moderate the radical nature of the Cultural Revolution. Privately he expressed unhappiness with the Cultural Revolution but was unable to avoid playing a high-profile role due to the expectations of Mao China's unpredictable political environment. LIN's few proactive attempts to direct the "Cultural Revolution" were attempts to protect "Red Guards" and his political allies from political persecution and to mediate the attempts of Jiang Qing and her followers to radicalize China's political climate. . In May 1967 LIN's follower Chen Boda saved Zhou Enlai from being persecuted by "Red Guards" by convincing them that Zhou was Lin's follower and supporter. . LIN BIAO'S COUP TO ASSASSINATE MAO: According to the Chinese government LIN Biao was made aware that Mao no longer trusted him after the 9th Central Committee the work we list now covers this subject and he harbored a strong desire to seize supreme power. In February 1971 LIN and his wife Ye Qun a Politburo member began to plot Mao's assassination. In March 1971 LIN's son LIN Liguo a senior Air Force officer held a secret meeting with his closest followers at an Air Force base in Shanghai. At this meeting LIN Liguo and his subordinates supposedly drafted a plan to organize a coup titled "Project 571." . Mao got word about this plan Zhou Enlai began to investigate. Lin Biao eight men one woman took off on a plane which had insufficient fuel escaping to escape to the Soviet Union. The plane ran out of fuel and crashed in Mongolia on September 13 1971 all aboard were instantly killed. The circumstances are still clouded and the truth may never be known ! . CONDITION: This small pamphlet is bound in the original publisher's thin red limp wrappers. There is some of the usual spine head/tail wear corner wear a few mended page corners reinforcing them. The front cover author's name: LIN BIAO was crossed out twice in pen. . Since Lin was officially sanctioned by Mao on September 8 1972 for his plot to assassinate Mao. Thereafter at Mao's orders. LIN BIAO's name was stricken from history all books posters writings photos et al were to be destroyed and pulled down from public places as being a 'traitor' to the CCP. . Since then a majority of remaining LIN's books & writings if ever found for the most part had his photo & name either "X'd" out or defaced a common state of the few remaining items related to LIN. It is uncommon to find anything Lin that has not been defaced. Un-defaced items remain very rare and obscure or were items that went abroad prior to his death. . The pages are slightly wavy-wrinkled from a trifle bit of slight damping else all pages clean solid no marks or damage otherwise. An excellent and obscure example. Compiled in one of the hotspots of the Cultural Revolution it was designed to establish Lin as China's foremost leader apart from the Chairman himself. Lin's growing power and cult of personality made him a force that Mao would eventually have to reckon with. The first edition of Quotations from Comrade Lin Biao was published in Wuhan in December 1967 only a few months after armed conflict among different Cultural Revolution organisations in the city had come close to descending into a state of civil war. For the organisations involved in the compilation of this work it demonstrated their loyalty to the leadership in Beijing and courted the support of Lin and the People's Liberation Army. Shortly before the first edition went to press a high-level document outlining preparations for the Ninth Congress of the Party stressed the need to increase Lin's prestige as Mao's heir-apparent and most ardent follower. This second edition quickly followed a few weeks later to answer this call and included an additional preface heralding the widespread enthusiasm for the first edition. ‎Lin fu zhuxi yulu "Quotations From Vice-Chairman Lin"‎

‎Beijing: Beijing mangwen chubanshe 1967. A scarce Braille edition of the revolutionary wisdom of Mao's "closest comrade in arms" First edition in Braille first printing one of 500 copies of this collection of sayings by Lin published to ensure nobody was exempt from his burgeoning cult of personality. Editions of Lin's writings transformed him into China's number two fountain of ideological wisdom with a power base that would eventually rival that of Mao himself. Scarce with no copies recorded institutionally. The Chinese government had introduced a uniform Chinese Braille system in 1953 and by the mid-1970s there were over 170 organisations in China catering to the blind which all required copies of the latest propaganda publications. At the beginning of the Cultural Revolution Beijing mangwen chubanshe Beijing Braille Press was one of just two publishers in the country with the facilities to produce Braille books and it shouldered the task of producing the majority of translations including the present work. The high cost of production for works in Braille due to the large quantity of paper required was subsidized by the state rather than passed on to customers through the retail price demonstrating the state's determination to ensure that the Cultural Revolution's cult of personality touched all state subjects. This selection of quotations from Lin was first published in Chinese the preceding year. As the driving force behind the growth of the Mao cult Lin Biao inevitably accrued a level of political power and influence that left him in day-to-day control of a large swathe of China's government and party bureaucracy. His policy statements and speeches received extensive coverage in state media while at rallies and political meetings he wielded political legitimacy flowing from his unique association with Mao. As Lin's status as Mao's chosen successor grew so did his cult with collections of his speeches and utterances printed to further study of his contribution to the Cultural Revolution's various ideological "breakthroughs". Eventually Lin's personal prestige became too much for Mao. In 1971 he mysteriously died in a plane crash while fleeing with his family to the Soviet Union.
