Original maroon stiff wrappers, chromolithograph title-plate mounted on cover, spine worn, two chipped corners, small repair to back cover. In a very good internal condition. ~ First edition. This extremely rare variant copy includes the text "Nach Original-Skizzen von E. R. Barteau" lithographed in blue on the cover plate. A splendid production. The beautiful plates are printed with rich, dense colours and excellent gloss. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least 9 separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than 20. Colas 230 .

In a very good binding and with fine interior, with all the plates in superb condition, free of any sign of age. ~ First edition. Uncommonly, all the wonderful plates in this particular copy are bound together as one section at the end of the book. They are bound in accordance with the called-for order. This rare arrangement allows viewing the plates as a whole, being a complete visual part of the work.
