Hardcover. price-clipped a good sound clean copy brown cloth with spine stamped in gold with some discoloration to the endpapers but no significant shelfwear; the jacket is somewhat tattered with extensive paper loss at and surrounding the top of the spine various other small chips and chunks missing along edges foxing to rear panel ink scribble on front panel etc.; it's encased in a new mylar cover and it covers the book and that's about all that can be said for it. A slightly later printing of the 1943 re-issue of the book first published by New Directions in 1939 and acknowledged as such in the jacket blurb; the Miller titles advertised on the rear flap and rear panel date this printing as 1946 or 1947. Per the jacket blurb the book "is a miscellaney made up of representative examples of the different forms in which Mille rhas worked -- stories sketches prose poems philosophical and critical essays surrealist fantasies and autobiographical notes. It contains several sections excerpted from 'Black Spring' together with the now famous story 'Max' in itself an unforgettable literary experience." Interestingly the last title advertised on the rear jacket panel "Selected Writings of Henry Miller" which was "to be published next year" apparently wasn't published at least not under that title. .
