Into the night life.
Berkeley: Henry Miller and Bezalel Schatz 1947. Copy # 168 signed by author and artist. Very Good/The tortured publication history of this title begins with the sixteen months that Miller and Bezalel took to produce the sheets with the help of printer Alfred Stoddard in an edition of 800 copies. A prospectus apparently failed to generate subscribers so according to Schifreen and Jackson fewer than 200 copies were bound Hargrave estimates even fewer. The sheets were then stored in a closet suffering damage from vermin and deterioration from mold. Salvagable sheets were reissued in 1971 some of them in a modified binding and some of the wormy sheets were then acquired by Coast Gallery in 1976 and bound for sale. Our copy #168 is surely from the original 1947 issue with the red fabric patch on the upper board. In the opening text Miller calls the book "a Coney Island of the mind." Ferlinghetti's book of the same name appeared eleven years later. . 37 cm; 40 leaves including two leaves printed on glassine silkscreened in color throughout. Text written in author's hand and color silkscreened. Bound in blue cloth with Bezalel's screened shapes and a piece of red fabric by Eda Kairn. LACKS slip case. SIGNED by Miller and Schatz on justification page. Slight wear at extremities. Unblemished text. References: Shifreen & Jackson A60a; Hargraves #30. ADDITIONALLY: a silkscreened bifolium 315 x 385 mm heavy white paper reproducing two pages of the book with text and illustration signed by Miller and Bezalel; edges a little pinched; AND a three-panel glassine sheet frayed printed on one panel with the full text of the title page which reads: "The one and only life is the night life the life of the mind the night of night the life the mind the night the night life. Docketed by recipient. </p> <p>From Scottish paleontologist and geologist Hugh Miller author of works of popular science including The Old Red Sandstone 1841 Footprints of the Creator 1850 and The Testimony of the Rocks 1856 to fellow paleontologist Edward Charlesworth editor of the Magazine of Natural History. </p> <p>"I am glad to see you have added a . shell column to your columns of British Fossils. Please set me down as a subscriber for a £2 . . set; as also for a £2 . . set of the fossils of the Mountain Limestone . . . I am at present engaged with printers and woodengravers in getting up a fourth edition of my little work the "Footprints" which will contain prints of a few curious unique organisms picked up since I had the pleasure of seeing you in Autumn last . . ."</p> <p>Although he had little formal scientific training Miller made important contributions to paleontology including the discovery of several previously unknown species of fossil fish. A deeply religious man Miller believed that "the fossil record confirmed in broad outline the cosmic drama depicted symbolically in the Bible" Dictionary of Scientific Biography. His geological studies had convinced him of the Earth's great age but he held that the fossil record represented separate creations rather than the transmutation of species over time. His Footprints of the Creator was intended as a rebuttal of the evolutionary theory put forth in Robert Chambers's Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation 1844. The fourth edition of Footprints mentioned in Miller's letter came out in 1853. First American edition and first edition with Agassiz's Memoir; 8vo pp. 5 ads 1 xlii 1 26-337 1 22 ads; engraved frontispiece portrait by Sartain from a Talbotype; nearly 60 figures in the text; original brown cloth gilt-stamped spine; slight cracking at the spine ends very good. With the ownership signature in pencil on the front free endpaper of Chester Averill 1836-1883 "State Geological Survey of Cal. San Fran 1862." Also with pencil annotations by Averil in a dozen or so places throughout the text often taking exception to Miller's observations. Hugh Miller was an uneducated quarry man who came to prominence by writing letters to his local editor in Scotland condemning the House of Lords for demanding changes made to the Church of Scotland. His skills as a writer were immediately recognized and he was encouraged to write and publish more articles. Since his first love was the quarry in which he worked he began writing articles on geology which were very well received and published in book form. His autobiography went through numerous editions and was seen as an example for the working class of how a uneducated man could succeed by hard work and trust in his opinions. Miller whose work was praised by such men as Agassiz Carlyle Hunt and Huxley committed suicide two days before Christmas in 1856. <br/><br/> Gould and Lincoln hardcover books

They at once accorded to the old red sandstone as a formation an importance scarcely before recognised. His technical ichthyology was based on Agassiz's contemporary researches among the fishes of the 'Old Red' but it contained important improvements and the best part of the work was founded entirely on original observation. 'The more I study the fishes of the "Old Red"' wrote Professor Huxley twenty years afterwards 'the more I am struck with the patience and sagacity manifested in Hugh Miller's researches and by the natural insight which in his case seems to have supplied the place of special anatomical knowledge.'
