The Price.

Miller Arthur. The Price. San Francisco: The Arion Press 1999. Large octavo. Cloth paper labels. Fine in slipcase. First edition in this format illustrated with duo-tone offset lithographs by Stan Washburn. One of three hundred numbered copies of 326 signed by the author and the artist. 128 p. The eight illustrations 10" x 7" by Stan Washburn depict the set for the play in great detail. The binding is full cloth in a golden-brown color with an additional illustration by Washburn of a clock inset on the front cover; enclosed in a slipcase with cloth edges and paper sides. Extremely fine in slipcase.

Miller's most successful work since Death of a Salesman The Price depicts a family betrayal played out by two brothers who grew up during the Depression. They come together after sixteen years estrangement to clear their childhood home in Manhattan of furniture. Long-held rivalries resentments and delusions surface when they meet amidst surroundings that prompt painful memories of their father who became immobilized after losing his wealth in the Crash of 1929. As they confront each other while negotiating with an elderly dealer in second-hand goods the viewer - and reader - understands that ‘the price’ has more than one meaning. Comic relief comes in the character of the 89-year-old furniture dealer Gregory Solomon a wise man who is both scoundrel and saint. hardcover books

Miller Arthur; Bigsby Christopher
The Crucible: A Play in Four Acts Penguin Classics
New York: Penguin Books 2003. Reprint. Reprint. Very Good. 2003 reprint. Edges lightly worn. xxv 143 pp. "The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play based on the actual events that in 1692 led to the Salem Witch Trials a series of hearings before local magistrates to prosecute over 150 people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The play was written in the early 1950s as a response to McCarthyism when the US government blacklisted accused communists. Miller himself was to be questioned by the House of Representatives' Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of 'contempt of Congress' for failing to identify others present at meetings he had attended. It was first performed at the Martin Beck Theater on Broadway on January 22 1953. The reviews of the first production which Miller felt was stylized and too cold were largely hostile although the New York Times noted 'a powerful play in a driving performance'. Nonetheless the production won the 1953 'Best Play' Tony Award. A year later a new production succeeded and the play became a classic. Today it is studied in high schools and universities because of its status as a revolutionary work of theater and for its allegorical relationship to testimony given before the House Committee On Un-American Activities during the 1950s. It is a central work in the canon of American drama. Penguin Books unknown books
