From a contemporary review: "There is very much more to this volume than a reproduction in modern French of Nicolas Contat's manuscript Anecdotes Typographiques and the burlesque poem on the wretched experience of an idealistic young printing apprentice by Defresne. Each work is provided with an introduction that for Contat's work extending to over twenty pages there are several plates copious notes and three important appendixes. The first reproduces in two-dozen pages of line blocks poems addressed by printers to their master or his family most often on the occasion of a marriage but sometimes because of an honour bestowed on the master. From the introduction: ".from the early years of the fourteenth century onwards rich textiles such as velvets and silk brocades had been used in royal and other lay circles for covering favourite or especially valuable manuscripts. From the fifteenth century in particular the velvet cover was often extra adorned by embroidery but on the continent this form of de luxe binding yielded fairly rapidly in the sixteenth century to the new and more durable morocco binding with gold-tooling. In England embroidery remained widely popular until the mid seventeenth century dying out only with the Civil War after which morocco leather became more generally used here as well. Unfortunately the fragility of most textiles as a binding material especially when used on the heavy wooden boards often necessary with parchment manuscripts has resulted in a paucity of surviving specimens of such early bindings. Nevertheless for the period 1500-1650 a certain number do survive and this is the principal period illustrated here. A certain number of prayer-books and similar items have continued almost to the present day to be bound in velvet or embroidered bindings and a few specimens of these have been included. Altogether some eighty-five textile and forty-five embroidered bindings have been found in the Bodleian but there are others in college collections and some outstanding examples are reproduced in this booklet.
