BARBER John Warner 1798 1885.
Historical Poetical & Pictorial American Scenes
New Haven Conn: J.W. Barber 1850. 8vo. 7 2/8 x 4 4/8 inches. Engraved frontispiece and additional title-page with original hand-colour illustrated throughout with uncoloured engraved vignettes a bit spotted throughout. Original publishers brown cloth gilt hinges split. First edition. Barber said that his primary ambition was to "preach the Gospel by means of pictures." Five of his first seven publications had religious themes and his New England Primer incorporated engravings of Christian stories to teach reading. Four of these works were directed toward children. Although Barber was a religious man he was also aware that children's literature was a rapidly growing market especially among the educated middle class. Barber's most productive work however was in history. In 1827 he traveled around the country in a horse and wagon interviewing witnesses to local historical events and collecting data from books newspapers gravestones and other sources that he thought would yield useful information on the nation's past. He published his findings in Historical Scenes in the United States and illustrated his text with his own engravings of scenes of America's early settlement. Although the book was not well received Barber's use of local data became the methodology of his future historical work. He was more successful in 1831 with History and Antiquities of New Haven which was followed in 1836 by a history of Connecticut. In 1839 he published Massachusetts Historical Collections then in 1840 entered into a partnership with Henry Howe to write a history of New York State which was followed by Historical Collections of the State of New Jersey in 1844. The team of Barber and Howe followed the same formula that was initially successful for Barber: they traveled around gathering material and conducting interviews primarily of old people. They then compiled their data and divided states into geographic or political sections described each with statistics anecdotes or long quotations from printed sources and illustrated the material with engravings. The results were collections of history and folklore. Their goal was "to give faithful representations rather than picturesque scenery or beautiful specimens of art Michael T. Johnson for ANB. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. New Haven, Conn: J.W. Barber, 1850. hardcover

New York: S. Tuttle for the Authors 1847. Book. Good. Full-Leather. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Originally published 1844. Howes B 121 later edition not noted in Howes -- unlisted 4th printing following editions of 1845 and 1846. Full leather considerably rubbed with exposed corners. Lacks spine panel; both boards still anchored by binding cords. Thus best considered as binding copy. Marbled endpapers. 512 pp. illus. w/ engraved plates figures set into text. Double engraved frontis. with tissue guard both engravings hand colored. Interior ranges from clean and bright to moderately foxed with most pronounced foxing as expected proximate to plates. Dampstaining evident on early and late leaves also along margins here and there not pronounced or affecting legibility. Former owner signature on front blank of Alice M. Smith Yardville New Jersey. 522 pp. Most editions of this title contain a fold-out frontis. map; this copy does not but there is no indication that a map has been removed so we speculate that perhaps this edition was issued without one. Exterior Fair only due to lacking spine panel interior reasonably intact VG thus Good overall. S. Tuttle for the Authors Hardcover

BARBER John Warner 1798 1885.
History of the Most Important and Interesting Religious Events.
New-Haven Conn. J.H. Bradley 1851. 8vo. 7 2/8 x 4 2/8 inches. Two engraved frontispieces vignette title-page and 16 plates with multiple vignettes spotted throughout. Original publishers pale blue cloth gilt unevenly faded to brown extremities rubbed. First published in 1848. Their goal was "to give faithful representations rather than picturesque scenery or beautiful specimens of art." Michael T. Johnson for ANB. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. New-Haven, Conn. J.H. Bradley, 1851. hardcover
