Encuadernación original en pergamino.Libro muy escaso en comercio nada a la venta y raro en los catálogos colectivos solo 3 copias consignadas en el CCPB CCPB000210099-1.Duarte Madeira Arrais 1596-1652Arrais es uno de los pocos autores portugueses que sin haber vivido fuera del país adquirió cierta ―aunque limitada― proyección en el ámbito de la medicina fuera de las fronteras nacionales y también más allá de su época. Nació en Moimenta Gouveia probablemente en enero de 1594. Según él mismo declaró fue estudiante en Salamanca en 1620; en 1638 se sabe que era médico del rey Felipe IV y que ejercía la medicina en Lisboa.Duarte Madeira Arrais y la polémica en torno a la sangría:Duarte Madeira Arrais 1596-1652 publicó en 1638 en portugués una apología sobre la sangría practicada en los pies. Este texto se inscribe en la dilatada controversia que tuvo como punto de partida el temprano debate en Portugal entre dos médicos humanistas el francés Pierre Brissot y el portugués Mestre Dionísio. El tratado que mezcla observaciones médico-empíricas y argumentos teóricos era una respuesta a aquellos que promovían esta práctica solamente en los brazos. La Apologia rebate la opinión de Francisco Borges de Azevedo que defendía la tesis contraria a la que sostenía el autor y sus colegas. Ahora bien más allá de la cuestión epistemológica el texto encubre también otros objetivos médico-profesionales.Hasta el siglo xix las prácticas terapéuticas más corrientes ―asociadas o no a intervenciones quirúrgicas― eran la purga la lavativa y la sangría. Esta última suscitó una dilatada controversia que actualizó cuestiones ya antiguas acerca de la frecuencia de uso de esta práctica y de su lugar en la medicina. Se distinguía entonces entre la "derivación" sangría realizada cerca de la afectación y la "revulsión" sangría realizada en el lugar opuesto al de la afectación. El objeto de esta controversia no era sólo práctico sino también textual pues el humanismo galeno-hipocrático se desenvolvió con textos nuevos que se enfrentaban con los de la tradición arábigo-latina2.
