KILLING FOR SPORT: Essays by Various Writers.
London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd. 1914. First edition first printing. First edition first printing. Publisher's original red card wrappers with titles in black to the upper cover and spine and a declaration of the "Aims and Objects of the Humanitarian League" to the rear. A very good copy the binding firm with a little minor chipping to the spine and a little wear to the extremities. The contents with scattered foxing to the preliminary pages and the text-block edge are otherwise clean throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. A scarce collection of anti-hunting essays edited by the leading vegetarian and animal rights author Henry Stephens Salt with a preface by his friend fellow vegetarian and committed opponent to blood-sports George Bernard Shaw and including an essay by like-minded socialist thinker poet and early gay rights activist Edward Carpenter. Published under the auspices of Salt's Humanitarian League the collection presents itself as the first work to consider both the "humanitarian and economic objections to blood-sports" as well as encompassing a wider range of standpoints than ever before offered. This "war-time" edition in card wrappers forms the true first edition preceding the hardcover editions of 1915 and 1917. An important pioneering philosophical and practical work by a group of notable author-activists elucidating the various key objections to blood-sports and aiming to reform both legislation and public opinion. Life of Henry David Thoreau
London: Richard Bentley and Son 1890. First Edition. Octavo. 23cm. Publisher's maroon heavy bevelled cloth boards titled in gilt to spine. 315pp. Some minor rubbing and scuffing to the corners and spine ends with some light sunning to the spine the head of the spine is bumped and there is a shallow strip at the head where the color has been bleached. Strong and solid shows very well. A substantial piece of book production. Internally clean dark green coated endpapers. Ownership in pencil to a front flyleaf from E.P. Dickinson of Amherst Mass. A sensitive and scholarly biography of Thoreau from Salt an English renaissance man known for his espousal of vegetarianism campaigning for education and prison reform devotion to animal rights and for being the person who introduced Thoreau's beliefs and writings to Mohandas Ghandiat least partially influencing his philosophies regarding vegetarianism and pacifism. Notably ahead of his time in reference to social reform and animal rights he was of the belief that little beneficial change could occur until humanity acknowledged its close relationship with the animal kingdom refered to in his writings as "lower races" and began to view life as a universal brotherhood rather than a spectrum of higher and lower orders. SALT, Henry (1780-1827)
Pagodas at Trinchicunum
London: William Miller 1809. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by D. Havell after Henry Salt on wove paper watermark 'J Whatman'. An excellent view of Tamil Nadu including one of the great irrigation tanks: a true masterpiece of early technology.

Henry Salt artist traveller diplomat and collector of antiquities was born at Lichfield Staffordshire England on 14 June 1780. He was determined to become a portrait-painter and upon leaving school was taught drawing by Glover the watercolour-painter of Lichfield. In 1797 he went to London to study with Joseph Farington R.A. and then with John Hoppner R.A. in 1800. The turning point in his career was 3 June 1802 when Salt left London for an Eastern tour with George viscount Valentia afterwards Lord Mountnorris whom he accompanied as secretary and draughtsman. He visited India Sri Lanka and Abyssinia returning to England on 26 Oct. 1806. He made many drawings some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's Voyages and Travels to India published in 1809. The present image is fromTwenty-four Views in St. Helena the Cape India Ceylon the Red Sea Abyssinia and Egypt published by William Miller with hand-coloured aquatints by D. Havell and J. Bluck from Salt's own drawings. The originals of all these drawings were retained by Lord Valentia who also retained the ownership of the copper plates after Salt's death. The format and style of presentation of the plates is similar to Thomas and William Daniell's great work Oriental Scenery 1795-1808 and the artistry displayed by both Salt and his engravers is in many cases more than a match for the Daniell's images. Salt visited Sri Lanka only a few years after the British had wretes power from the Dutch who had been the dominant western presence on the island from the middle of the 17th century until 1795.

Abbey Travel II 515 no.13.
