Mai 1916, dem Todestag Schwarzschilds, veröffentlicht wurde. - Schwarzschild (1873-1916) leistete grundlegende Beiträge zur theoretischen Physik und zur Relativitätstheorie. Er war einer der großen Pioniere bei der Entwicklung der von Niels Bohr vorgeschlagenen Theorie der Atomspektren. Schwarzschild lieferte die erste exakte Lösung der allgemeinen Gravitationsgleichungen von Albert Einstein. Er legte auch den Grundstein für die Theorie der schwarzen Löcher, indem er mit Hilfe der allgemeinen Gleichungen nachwies, dass Körper mit ausreichender Masse eine Fluchtgeschwindigkeit haben, die die Lichtgeschwindigkeit übersteigt, und daher nicht direkt beobachtbar sind. - "It was Schwarzschild's great merit to have introduced into the quantum theory the analytical method of employing action-angle variables or uniformizing variables, as Bohr later used to call them. Although originally intended as theoretical accounts of the Stark effect on the basis of Sommerfeld's generalization of Bohr's theory, Schwarzschild's and Epstein's papers not only clarified the problem concerning the choice of the coordinates to be used in expressing the quantum conditions but showed quite generally how quantum-theoretic problems concerning periodic or conditionally periodic systems have to be linked up with the Hamilton-Jacobi theory in classical mechanics. In fact, it was due to their work that in its subsequent elaborations by Bohr and Born it almost seemed as if Hamilton's method had expressly been created for treating quantum-mechanical problems" (Jammer, Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, p. 103).‎
