1776 Letter from One Englishman to Another Asking for Financial Advice Given the “Fluctuating situation of Publick affairsâ€
Knaresborough England 1776. Single three page letter measuring 6 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. Normal wear; Near Fine. A letter from Nathaniel Sharpe in Knaresborough to Edmund Green a merchant in London addressed to Green at the Jamaica Coffee House. This café the first of its kind in London was established in the mid-17th century; in 17th and 18th century Britain coffee houses were popular meeting places particularly for conducting business. Sharpe writes to Green:<br /> <br /> “Your Esteem’d favour of the 22d is before me and the picture you have drawn of the situation of publick affairs are truly very alarming and have no doubt but the Representation is a very just and real one. . But to the following Fact place yourself in my situation and give me your Candid opinion Wether I am safe in letting £2200 lay any longer or whether I ought to call it in and place it out on a Security in this Country.â€<br /> <br /> He describes his investments and states that:<br /> <br /> “I have not one shilling in Trade since 1760 and in Decemr. 1762 Retir’d to this place and found myself in possession of a Happiness that I could ill brook to part with. And which I would wish to preserve. Should this sum be in no danger I can live as usual.â€<br /> <br /> The American Revolutionary War had a significant impact on the British economy; at the time Sharpe was writing although the conflict had been ongoing for some time the war itself was in its early days and uncertainty was high.<br /> <br /> Other than asking for financial advice Sharpe tells Green that Green’s “Brother Tommy had . taken a Cup of Liquor rather too freely and had been drawn into Cards†alarming their mother who had requested that Sharpe inform Green about the event; asks Green to visit her; and sends his good wishes to a mutual friend. unknown

Contents include 10 glossy black and white photographs approximately 9" x 7" with short descriptions at the bottom. These photographs depict coffee farms workers production etc. in the Sao Paulo Brazil region. The covers are edge worn with some dark stains on the back cover. The Chester Vale coffee plantation Jamaica owned by the Breon family. Six sets of manuscript accounts four for Edmund Breon; one for Thomas Cockburn guardian of Miss Elizabeth Susanna Breon; and one for her husband Colin McLarty MD.
Kingston Jamaica. 1785 1787 1789 1791 1792 1795. Chester Vale a substantial estate of 1420 acres paid taxes on 124 slaves in 1801. McLarty d.1844 was Physician-General for Surrey Jamaica and several letters written by him from the island are in the National Library of Scotland and are quoted in Alan L Karras's 'Sojourners in the Sun: Scottish Migrants in Jamaica and the Chesapeake 1740-1800' Cornell 1992. In 1794 he acquired Chester Vale on his marriage to Elizabeth Susanna Breon whose father Edmund Breon had died in 1792 leaving her the ward of the solicitor Thomas Cockburn. The six items in good condition lightly aged and worn. ONE: Docketed 'Edmund Breon Esqe. Sales Coffee &c Acct Current'. Signed 'Errors Excepted July 1st. 1785. for Mark Howard Breon's agent - S White'. 3pp. small 4to. Bifolium. Covering the period of May and June 1785. MELBOURNE Besses Banquet Vienna Café 20 July 1911.
Pen-and-ink illustration and calligraphy with onlaid silver gelatin photograph on thin card 420 x 200 mm sheet; a few light marks to the upper margins otherwise fine condition. A significant piece of ephemera from one of Melbourne's most famous dining establishments of the 1890s and early 1900s the Vienna Café which occupied the grand premises at 25 Collins Street East. The Australia Hotel was later built on the same site. This unique ""sign"" was probably created in-house on the occasion of a special banquet held at the Vienna Café a private function for the 17 young men in the photograph. Note that each of them has a letter ""B"" for ""Besse"" displayed in his lapel. ""Completed in Collins Street in 1939 to a Leslie M. Perrott design the Australia Hotel replaced an existing hotel of that name which had been established on the site of the highly fashionable and popular Vienna Café Hotel 1890-1915 Gunsler's Café Hotel 1879-90 and the City Club Hotel established about 1872. In 1908 the Vienna lease was acquired by Anthony Lucas who in 1916 contracted Walter Burley Griffin to remodel the interior to form a banquet hall incorporating a balcony mezzanine for his Café Australia Hotel. When Fred Matear and Norman Carlyon purchased the freehold and rebuilt the hotel in 1939 elements of the Griffin ceiling were incorporated into the ballroom of the new hotel."" Chrystopher J.
