FORBIN (Louis Nicolas Philippe Auguste de, comte) peintre français d’histoire, de compositions animées, directeur des musées royaux, membre de l’Institut (1777-1841)
Ensemble de 2 lettres signées au peintre Alexandre Colin (1798-1873) grand portraitiste, il fut élève de Girodet. On connait de lui de nombreux portraits de ses contemporains du théâtre et de la peinture, notamment celui de son ami Delacroix ainsi que celui de Géricault.
Ces deux lettres datées du même jour, 8 mai 1835, concernent l’acquisition de son tableau « la Jeune Convalescente », qui faisait partie de l’exposition de cette année. « Mr l’Intendant Général de la Liste Civile m’a fait connaître que d’après les ordres du Roi, il vous a été commandé un tableau pour la Galerie d’Apollon au Louvre... ».

A propos de ses soucis de « molaires » pour lesquelles, le praticien conseillé par un de ses amis, est intervenu, pour lui extraire quatre molaires, sans douleur. « Et c’est vrai puisqu’hier il m’a extrait quatre racines sans douleurs sans cocaïne, par un courant d’oxygène qu’il vous envoie sur la gencive, cela produit un froid… et il tire…On la sent passer mais on ne souffre pas. Te dire que c’est réjouissant serait exagéré. Il me fabrique au plus juste un appareil qui m’aidera à broyer et mes digestions ne seront plus imparfaites. C’est tout pour ma personne. Le déjeuner tout à l’heure avec Georges Hugo. [Peintre français, petit-fils de Victor Hugo] J’ai reçu de Florence une carte de Jean-Loup et une de Winey Edmond de Polignac (pour Winnaretta Singer, princesse de Polignac, dite Winnie, qui est une mécène musicale d'origine américaine et une des héritières des machines à coudre Singer.) Three-quarter red levant morocco over pink-coloured cloth gilt fillets raised bands gilt decoration & lettering on spine marbled endpapers a.e.g. occasional light foxing slight weakening to the gutter hinge of frontisp. slight rubbing and very slight bumping to couple corners still a VG bright copy w/ the original red pebbled cloth binding bound-in to rear and the fore-edge painting still quite bright. First edition of this humorous and entertaining work by the Brothers Mayhew together with a nicely executed Fore-edge painting in a fine binding. Caerphilly Castle was built by the Norman Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan which resulted in extensive fighting for generations and the most elaborate water defenses in all of Britain. With a fine fore-edge painting under the gilt showing "Christchurch in Hampshire here James Fordyce lived." With an early typed note relating to the painting. The artist possibly copied the engraving "Christchurch Hampshire" from the print by E. Finden after a picture by W. Westall published in Great Britain Illustrated 1830. This view shows the single row boat in the foreground similar to the image with this fore-edge painting. Artist unknown; painted ca. 1900-1955. This scene is delicately and skillfully painted. "Fordyce's delivery and gestures were studied and he drew crowds to Monkwell Street. His topics were didactic but he also satisfied cultured tastes and dealt with the ethics of actual life. David Garrick was impressed; Fordyce associated with Samuel Johnson and introduced him to Blair. Student's prize for George Rodney Scott d. March 3 1929 at Winchester College July 8 1866. later a Fellow of Merton College; bookplate of Bernardine Murphy. Very good. With a fore-edge painting by the "Dover" artist "Ponte Rotti Rome." With the title hand-written by the artist. Painted ca.1920-30s. Fore-edge painting of "Rotti Bridge Rome." The "Ponte Rotto" was drawn by J.D. Harding and engraved by Edward Francis Finden ca.1834 and the fore-edge artist has used this view to apply to the edge of Clinton's Chronology of Rome. The provenance suggests that Scott was the owner through 1929 and on his death it may have found its way to Marks & Co. perhaps by scouting or by auction. From that date it is consistent with other pieces also painted by the 'Dover' painter though this tends to support the point that the earliest date this book could have received a fore-edge painting would have been in 1929. <br /><br /> PROVENANCE: Bookplate of Bernadine Murphy Donahue 1904-1968 a prominent California Catholic philanthropist who married Daniel Donahue in 1954 and established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of her father to promote Roman Catholic causes. "So helpful to the Church was the foundation that Pope John XXIII conferred on Bernardine the title of 'Papal Countess' the only title given to an American during his pontificate. Several years later Pope Paul VI conferred on Daniel the title 'Gentleman of His Holiness' the highest award bestowed on a layman in the Church and the first such Award ever given to an American. Moran La Cañada purchased 16 July 1962 with fore-edge painting named on the receipt – gifted to William "Bill" & Phoebe Jane Easton in 1962. The important aspect of this provenance is that within it is a proof that this book was painted on before July 1962. Bill Easton ca.1916-1996 paleontologist was a professor of geological sciences at USC specializing in fossil corals. "Dr. Easton was an outstanding gentleman in the truest sense of the word" said paleobiologist David J. Bottjer. Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1833. unknown

Contemporary full crimson straight-grain morocco with triple fillet border in blind and panel with large gilt corner-pieces of volutes curls and roundels enclosing a central masonic sunburst emblem in gilt with dove and Tetragrammaton to both covers. Heavily gilt tooled compartments and spine head and tail. Gilt rolls to edge corners. Gilt fillets to turn-ins. All edges gilt. With the crimson morocco bookplate of Christ's Church - Middlesex dated 1825. Housed in an early twentieth century red cloth slipcase. With a splendid early twentieth century fore-edge painting by an unknown hand depicting Folly Bridge and Bacon's Tower at Oxford. Folly Bridge is a stone bridge over the River Thames carrying the Abingdon Road south from the center of Oxford England. It was erected 1825-27 to designs of a little-known architect Ebenezer Perry died 1850 who practiced in London. The bridge is in two parts separated by an island. The origin of the name is uncertain although it has been suggested that it originated about 1650 after a tenant of Bacon's study. <br/><br/> Oxford: Printed at the Clarendon Press by J. Cooke and S. Bookplate of Bernardine Murphy. Very nice copy. With a fore-edge painting by the "Dover" painter associated with Marks & Co. showing "The Coliseum from the Orto Farnese" perhaps after Frederick Walmisley 1815-1875. <br /><br /> PROVENANCE: The Catholic philanthropist Bernardine Murphy is Sir Daniel J. and Countess Bernardine Murphy Donohue 1904-1968; married in 1954. They resided in Los Angeles at one time buying the mansion of Earle C. Anthony the founder of KABC. That mansion was donated to the Immaculate Heart Sisters in 1971 upon the death of the Countess. The couple established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of Bernardine's father to promote important Roman Catholic and other philanthropic causes. Mrs. Donohue is entombed next to Cardinal James Francis McIntyre. Well kept copy in full black levant leather raised spine bands lettering and decoration in gilt and in blind all edges gilt gilt tooled inner dentelles 8.5" tall 300 pages plus folding facimile plate in Greek and errata page. Light edgewear good hinges sound text block small bookplate of Frances Rashleigh on front pastedown F. Rashleigh handwritten on blank toward the front endpapers and blanks at beginning and end newer than the book and probably early 20th century pages clean with only some light occasional foxing. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall. Printed for John Murray, By Thomas Davison, White-Friars Hardcover
