La Femme Visible
Paris: Éditions Surréalistes 1930. First edition. 72 pp. Original aluminum foil paper wrappers covered by red tissue paper title printed in black on the cover. Unbound sheets as this variant was issued. Photo-lithographed portrait of Gala heliogravure frontispiece retouched with a burin and six heliographic plates. A bit of wear to the extremities else a beautiful copy of a very fragile production.

Of an edition of 204 copies one of the very few on Rodingold vellum in sheets justified on the colophon by the Service de Presse stamp. With DalÃ’s autograph dedication on the half-title “Hommage de l’auteur. Salvador Dali.†Laid in is the prière d’insérer announcement with text by André Breton and Paul Eluard.

This issue of La Femme Visible is unbound sheets laid into the foil and red wrappers. For these few copies Dali apparently often added a simple autograph homage. The book did not meet with great success as Eluard reveals in a letter to Gala on January 27 1931: “La Femme visible a une presse immonde. Pourquoi Dali n’a-t-il pas mis dans ses dédicaces le nom des gens. Comme cela on n’en parlera pas ou en mal.†La Femme Visible is receiving dreadful publicity. Why didn’t Dali put people’s names in his dedications That way people won’t talk about it or talk about it badly. Georges Sebbag in his bibliography of Editions Surréalistes does not mention these press copies nor the printing of the book in sheets.

One of DalÃ’s earliest books containing four texts: “L’Âne Pourri†“La Chèvre Sanitaire†“L’Amour†and “Le Grand Masturbateur.†In these writings inspired by Freudian and post-Freudian theories DalÃ’s aim is to upset the frontiers between dream and reality and to break down the convictions that form the basis of so-called “bourgeois values.†He later spoke of it as “a spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on the critical and systematic objectification of delirious associations and delirious interpretations.†

References: Michler and Löpsinger. La Femme Visible The Visible Woman.
Paris Editions Surréalistes 1930. . Limited edition numbered 2/9 'auteur' on the justification seemingly out of series inscribed by Dali on the half-title in ink 'hommage de l'auteur Salvador Dali'; 4to 19 x 22 cm; 8 illustrations hors-texte of which one is a photolithographed portrait of Gala one an original etching three reproductions of Dali's drawings and three photographic prints; loose as issued in the original aluminium foil paper wrappers covered in red printed glassine very minor loss of wrappers to spine a very good copy.
The first edition of Dali's first surrealist work.

The 'femme visible' refers to Dalí's wife Gala who inspired him to create the book and to whom the work is dedicated. Her portrait is placed opposite the metallic covers to provide a reflection of her. It is Dali's manifesto for the paranoiac-critical method a surrealist technique which consists of the artist invoking a paranoid state resulting in a deconstruction of the psychological concept of identity subjectivity thereby becoming the primary aspect of the artwork.

The present example is numbered '2/9 auteur' on the justification and signed by the artist on the half-title. The fragile red and metallic jacket which is often found damaged and torn is in remarkably fresh and unrestored condition.
Michler-Lapsinger 4; Launay 288. Le Mythe Tragique De L'Angelus De Millet
Paris France: Jean-Jacques Pauvert 1963. Special Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Large 8vo 9" - 10. Salvador Dali. A truly fine exemplar of the Special Limited Edition of only 100 copies printed by Societe d'Impressions Publicitiaires in October of 1963. Table Des Matieres at book's end with Prologue I Partie II Partie III Partie with Appendice et Notes. Epigraph reads "Le scenario 'secret' le plus bouleversant pour selui qui osera le film le plus ambitieux." Translated: "The most upsetting 'secret' scenario for him who dares to make the most ambitious film." From the personal library of Dr. Sue Taylor noted Professor Emerita of Portland State University Hans Bellmer expert and lecturer-extraordinaire but ultimately from the personal library of her friend the fine-art curator and impresario Don Baum 1922 – October 28 2008 and who purchased the item straight from the publisher. Baum was an American curator artist and educator according to his Wikipedia entry "most known as a key impresario and promoter of the Chicago Imagists a group of artists that had an enduring impact on American art in the later twentieth century." Taylor asserted that Baum was known for "lively and irreverent" exhibitions and that blended elements of popular culture with those of Surrealism. He enabled artists such as "Ed Paschke Jim Nutt Roger Brown Gladys Nilsson and Karl Wirsum" Wikipedia. This exemplar is bound in an attractive Imperial octavo format featuring oatmeal sailcloth over boards measuring 10 3/4" by 8 1/2" tall and wide respectively augmented with a black-and-white reproduction of a Millet painting inset barely abraded typed paper label to front cover and with original cloth belt and clasp fully intact. Twenty-eight tipped-in images several in full-page a couple in full-page format evincing inventive use of post-cards from the past some being mildly scurrilous others being of grasshopper proboscisces. The inset Millet painting reproduction at front cover is repeated again and again and again at verso of many leaves of fine typescript; the font-bite is a bit faint here and there but still easy to read. The most representative exemplar of Dali's "paranoiac-critical method" say art critics; all French-language text. Laid in loosely are two invitations from the publisher Editions Jean-Jacques Pauvert in effect invitations to receive their catalogues periodically. All in a fairly arresting exemplar of an unusual S.D. item and with tight provenance and valuable association. 105 pp.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes and for sets. Jean-Jacques Pauvert hardcover

DALI, Salvador
Le Mythe tragique de l'Angélus de Millet.
Paris: Jean-Jacques Pauvert 1963. Inscribed by Dali First edition inscribed by the artist across the title page "Pour Christine Vaclasmy Dali 1963" with a loose sketch of a figure possibly a girl skipping a common motif in Dalí's work. The Angelus by Jean-Francois Millet is an oil painting completed between 1857 and 1859. It depicts two figures in a field heads bowed over a basket of potatoes in their recitation of the Catholic devotional prayer. It had a significant impact on Dali who saw a print of the painting early in life and insisted that it did not depict a prayer but a funeral scene. The Louvre at his request had the painting examined by x-ray and showed that there was originally a small coffin-shaped object painted in place of the basket. This discovery is included in the prologue and much of the text depends upon Dalí's interpretation of The Angelus as a tragic image of American folklore. Dalí created several paintings inspired by the titular work: The Architectural Angelus of Millet and Gala 1933 and Gala and the Angelus of Millet Preceding the Imminent Arrival of the Conical Anamorphoses 1933. These were followed two years later by a similar pair of paintings which included a partial reproduction of Millet's Angelus called The Angelus of Gala and Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus. Quarto. Illustrated throughout by Salvador Dali 33 plates tipped in. Original beige cloth with woven strap and buckle titles to front cover on octagonal plate in red and black black and white illustration of The Angelus to front cover on rectangular plate. Housed in a custom box illustrated with photographs of this copy. Lightly foxed with a few marks and one small scratch to covers a little shelfwear a few slight bumps to head of front board a touch of foxing to end matter and occasionally toned box a little rubbed and tips lightly bumped else bright and clean. Dali, Salvador; Moore, J Peter
Les Diners de Gala
Koln: Taschen 2016. Large Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8x11x0. Minimal wear to corners jacket lightly rubbed. Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 2016 Large Hardcover. 321 pp. Translated into English from the original Spanish by J. Peter Moore. Les diners de Gala is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of taste. If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment close this book at once; it is too lively too aggressive and far too impertinent for you. - Salvador Dali Food and surrealism make perfect bedfellows: sex and lobsters collage and cannibalism the meeting of a swan and a toothbrush on a pastry case. The opulent dinner parties thrown by Salvador Dali 1904-1989 and his wife and muse Gala 1894-1982 were the stuff of legend. Luckily for us Dali published a cookbook in 1973 Les diners de Gala which reveals some of the sensual imaginative and exotic elements that made up their notorious gatherings. This reprint features all 136 recipes over 12 chapters specially illustrated by Dali and organized by meal courses including aphrodisiacs. The illustrations and recipes are accompanied by Dali's extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversation: 'The jaw is our best tool to grasp philosophical knowledge.' All these rich recipes can be cooked at home although some will require practiced skill and a well-stocked pantry. This is cuisine of the old school with meals by leading French chefs from such stellar Paris restaurants as Lasserre La Tour d'Argent Maxim's and Le Train Bleu. Taschen hardcover
