Venice, Ludovico Furlanetto, 1763. In-folio oblong de (1) f. de titre et 21 planches à pleine page. Demi-vélin à coins, dos lisse avec titre manuscrit en long, non rogné. Reliure de l’époque. 715 x 512 mm.‎ ‎Première édition et premier état de cette somptueuse et magnifique suite de vues sur Venise. Katalog Berlin, 2713 ; Constable, Canaletto, II, pp. 673-674 ; Nessi, Una Venezia di Carte, p. 31, n° 16 (« Presentazione del Doge… »). Condition d’une insigne rareté : immense de marges (715 x 512 mm), à l’état neuf, conservé dans sa reliure italienne en demi-vélin à coins strictement de l’époque. Aucun autre exemplaire en cette condition n’est apparu sur le marché depuis un demi-siècle. Suite formée d’un titre d’après Visentini et de 20 vues, l’ensemble gravé au burin et à l’eau forte par Giovanni Battista Brustolon. 14 de ces vues sont des adaptations d’après Canaletto et Visentini ; 4 sont inspirées par Marieschi et 2 sont des interprétations d’après Giambattista et Giuseppe Moretti. Par leur format, plus grand, et le souci du détail, ces 20 vues sont considérées comme des œuvres d’art à part entière ; les marchands de gravures ne s’y sont pas trompés. Au XVIIIe siècle, Venise « La Serenissima » avait perdu son rôle important dans le jeu économique et politique de l’Europe en faveur de la Grande Bretagne et des Pays-Bas. Derrière les riches façades des palazzi, Venise se détériorait. Le gouvernement était incapable de supporter ses artistes par des commandes pour l’exécution des travaux de décoration des grand palais et édifices. Au début du XVIIIe siècle les aristocrates anglais et des nobles de l’Allemagne se profilent comme les plus importants connaisseurs et acheteurs de l’art des peintres Vénitiens. Venise et son charme intemporel deviennent au XVIIIe siècle le sujet de prédilection de peintre appelés védutistes. Leurs vues de Venise se répandent très vite en Europe et font de la veduta, encore de nos jours, le genre le plus collectionné et l’un des plus aimés du public. Maître incontesté de la veduta, Giovanni Antonio Canal, dit Canaletto (Venise 1697-1768) marque son siècle en fixant dans ses toiles les différents visages de la Venise de son temps. Outre la Place Saint-Marc et le Grand Canal, immédiatement reconnaissables, on y retrouve les campi et les églises de Venise, ainsi que des vues de la lagune, de la vie quotidienne ou des jours de fête. Peintre de théâtre dans sa jeunesse, Canaletto parvient à associer un grand sens de la mise en scène, une technique de la perspective qu’il maîtrise parfaitement, et de très séduisants effets de lumière. On doit à Canaletto les plus belles et les plus novatrices vues de Venise, sources d’inspiration pour ses suiveurs. « Suite de très belles Vues Vénitiennes gravées par J.B. Brustolini. 1763. Gr. fol. En largeur. Cette œuvre contient les vues les plus belles de cette ville fameuse et de ses environs, en 20 feuilles. » (Catalogue des estampes du cabinet de ma dame la comtesse d’Einsiedel, n°248). Michele Marieschi (1710-1743), presque de la même génération que Canaletto, est considéré comme son brillant rival. Mais il se distingue par son goût des angles de vue inattendus. Natif de Val Zoldone, Brustolon (ca 1716-1796) s’installa à Venise dès 1733 en tant qu’illustrateur de livres pour G. Zerletti A. Girardi, Fr. Pitteri et les deux grands éditeurs, A. Zatta et G. Pasquali. Apprenti dans l’atelier de Giuseppe Wagner, Brustolon fut initié très jeune à l’art de la gravure et devint l’un des grands graveurs vénitiens du XVIIIe siècle. Probablement à l’initiative du consul Smith, Furnaletto le sollicita par la commande de cette série de gravures sur Venise et son architecture. Leur deuxième réalisation fut une série connue sous le nom de « Feste Dogali », commencée en 1766 et achevée en 1779, qui consiste en une suite de 12 vues. Exemplaire du premier état, avant les numéros, dans sa présentation à plat, la plus convoitée. Les vues sont d’un beau tirage, elles sont à toutes marges. Le papier a conservé toute sa fraîcheur. Quelques traces de plis. Une 21ème planche, « Presentazione del Doge in an Marco », a été ajoutée au volume. Provenant de la série « Feste Dogali », elle est du tirage avec numéro, soit le deuxième sur quatre. Recensement des suites Canaletto-Brustolon complètes passées sur le marché international depuis 30 ans, conservées dans leur reliure de l’époque : -Sotheby’s, 5 décembre 1996. Maroquin d’époque aux armes Foscarini. Exemplaire ne comprenant que le titre et les 11 vues du premier volume. Restauration à une planche. Vendu 52 700 $ il y a 18 ans. -Sotheby’s, année 2003 : complet du frontispice et des 20 vues de l’édition originale de 1763 ; ajoutées les deux vues de l’édition définitive de 1778 et une œuvre incomplète de 18 planches sur 24 des vues de Venise de Sandi de 1779. Reliure postérieure du XIXe siècle ; exemplaire très rogné 430 x 310 mm contre 512 x 720 pour le présent exemplaire. Second état avec le numéro des estampes pour la suite de Canaletto contre premier état avant les numéros pour le présent exemplaire. Vendu en cet état 66 000 € il y a 10 ans. The Ranelagh Gardens was a park in the Chelsea area that served along with Vauxhall as a "pleasure garden" for Londoners in the 18th Century. The Rotunda was used for entertainments including a performance there by Mozart in 1764. Oktober 1780 in Warschau), war ein venezianischer Maler, der für seine realistischen Veduten europäischer Städte, neben italienischen Städten vor allem Dresden, Wien und Warschau, bekannt ist. Die Maltechnik Bellottos wurde in dieser kurzen Zeit enorm bereichert: kühle Farbtöne, starke Licht-Schatten-Kontraste, eine von der Diagonalen bestimmte Bildkomposition und ein unnatürlich tiefer Horizont. Der Maler präsentiert uns eine Bühne, auf der nun das Stadtleben "gespielt" wird. Hinzu trat als neues Bildsujet auch die ländliche Landschaft. Während bei seinem Onkel Canaletto die Stadt "aufgeräumt", d. h. von allem Unansehnlichen befreit wurde, um ein Idealbild zu schaffen, bezog Bellotto das tägliche, alltägliche Leben in seine Bilder ein. Ein Vorgehen, das eher auf das nächste Jahrhundert voraus- als in die Vergangenheit zurückweist. Mit zunehmender technischer Sicherheit vergrößerte Bellotto auch das Bildformat. Im Jahr 1745 erhielt Bellotto von Karl Emanuel III., Herzog von Savoyen und König von Sardinien, den Auftrag für zwei Veduten von Turin. Obwohl dieser königliche Auftraggeber nicht dem Kundenkreis seines Onkels entsprach, signierte er dennoch mit dessen Künstlernamen, der offensichtlich immer noch Klang besaß: "BERNARDO BELLOTTO / DT. IL CANALETTO". Erstmals bezog Bellotto hier auch die ländliche Landschaft in die Stadtansicht mit ein. In den Veduten von Verona gelang es ihm, die Individualität dieser Stadt darzustellen.
