An unusual and emotive artist statement/poem by Chagall based on his work "The Apparition 1917-1918" describing in beautiful imagery a "dream" "evoked" in Chagall. A lovely clean tight very good plus copy in similar jacket outer jacket and complete with rare surviving card slipcase. Complete with an original lithographic frontispiece 'pulled on the presses of Mourlot in Paris'. Original publisher's khaki cloth gilt embossed to the spine and to the front board. Light or slight bumps to the head of the spine and upper front board corner - a light bump to the upper rear board corner. A neat former owner's name in blue biro to the front endpaper. The jacket has not been price-clipped - no tears. Neither are there any tears or chips to the outer transparent jacket. The card slipcase is a little dust soiled creased to the lower panel and slightly rubbed in places. Nevertheless it has more than done its job of keeping the book in a well preserved condition. With two original lithographs First edition in English of this superb presentation of Chagall's magnificent stained-glass windows 12 designs depicting the ancient tribes of Israel which met with worldwide praise and were soon recognized as among the finest specimens of modern religious art. The volume includes bound in as issued two original Chagall lithographs. The windows were first exhibited in Paris in June 1961 and later at the Museum of Modern Art in New York before installation in February 1962 in their permanent home of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centre in Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Windows published the same year as the French edition Vitraux pour Jerusalem remains the definitive work on the windows and is renowned for the richness of its illustrations. Chagall produced the two original lithographs especially for this book and directed the printing of a further 36 lithographs of preparatory colour designs. Tall quarto. Illustrated throughout with 2 original lithographs and 36 colour preparatory lithographic designs some of which are in 20 colours all printed by Mourlot Fréres with further black and white photographs and illustrations. Pre-eminent modern artist Marc Chagall was nearly 70 when he began working on his first major stained glass projects during the mid-to-late 1950's. In 1959 he was commissioned to create a set of stained glass windows for Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. Upon completion the Jerusalem Windows enjoyed two short exhibitions in Paris and New York before their permanent installation in the synagogue in 1962. These twelve masterpieces in stained glass each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel are showcased in this lush folio which also includes two original lithographs Chagall created exclusively for this publication.<br /> <br /> Readers may observe the development of the windows through a procession of preparatory sketches in pencil ink and watercolor; the final models are represented on full page color plates 36 total. Additional commentary by Jean Leymarie explains the religious significance of each subject as well as Chagall's artistic intentions.
