Während dieser Zeit freundete sich Hugnet mit einer Reihe einflussreicher Künstler des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts an wie Joan Miró Marcel Duchamp Pablo Picasso Tristan Tzara Man Ray und Jean Cocteau. Hugnet kam 1926 in Kontakt mit den Surrealisten nahm an vielen ihrer Aktivitäten teil dichtete schuf Collagen schrieb Bücher und gestaltete Bucheinbände für surrealistische Publikationen auch in Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Freund Joan Miró. 1929 erfolgte die Präsentation seines Filmes La Perle im Studio Ursulines in Paris. In den 1930er Jahren war Hugnet Mitglied der surrealistischen Bewegung. André Breton hatte sich nach der Lektüre von Hugnets Artikel Spirit of Dada in Painting für ihn interessiert; Tristan Tzara machte sie miteinander bekannt. 1936 war Hugnet an der Organisation der International Surrealist Exhibition in den New Burlington Galleries in London beteiligt.1939 wurde er aus der Bewegung ausgeschlossen da er seine Freundschaft mit dem in Ungnade gefallenen Dichter Paul Éluard nicht aufgeben wollte. Mit Unterstützung seines Vaters – ein französischer Möbelhersteller – gründete Hugnet einen Verlag «Les Editions de la Montagne» um seine Werke und die seiner Freunde darunter Tristan Tzara Pierre de Massot und Gertrude Stein zu veröffentlichen. Illustrated throughout by Pablo Picasso with a further 13 etched plates by the artist loosely inserted with tissue-guards as issued. Light rubbing to slipcase. Sporadic very light foxing to contents. A fine copy. Limited edition number 171 of 240 copies printed on Rives paper from a total edition of 340 copies of which 65 were printed on imperial japon and signed and 35 for private distribution and numbered using roman numerals. In 1926 Picasso was commissioned by the publisher Ambroise Vollard to do a series of illustrations for Balzac's novella Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu. Picasso became obsessed with the novella's theme and plot which details a painter's determination to create a masterpiece. Picasso executed 13 etchings for the book etchings that do not illustrate the events of the story instead dealing with the novel's deeper meaning especially the various elements of an artist's relationship with their model. Initially he produced 12 etchings but as a consequence of his loose interpretation Vollard requested a 13th etching to serve as a table for the original 12 imposing a form of order. In addition to the etchings the text is illustrated throughout with other designs by Picasso: 16 pages of dot and line drawings taken from a book of sketches which Picasso drew in Juan-les-Pins in 1924; 4 reproductions of drawings in the classical style from a series done at Juan-les-Pins in 1926; and 63 wood engravings after drawings in India ink in the curvilinear style of 1925-26. Picasso completed the 13 etched plates and textual illustrations by 1927 but publication was left until 1931 to coincide with the novella's centenary. Vollard took great care with the book commissioning Aimé Jourde for the text and typography Louis Fort to print the etchings and Georges Aubert for the incision of the wood engravings. His friend Albert Bernard wrote the preface. The publication remains widely recognized as among Picasso's finest illustrated books and indeed arguably among the finest illustrated books of the century. The novella had a lasting impact on Picasso: he was so inspired by the work that in 1935 he moved into 7 Rue des Grands Augustin in Paris the location of the artist's studio in the story; it was in this building that Picasso painted Guernica and he remained there until 1955. "Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu can in its definitive version be considered to be Balzac's declaration of aesthetic faith at least as far as painting is concerned and his most fervent plea for the cause of art and the artist. Through the character of an old painter named Frehnhofer who has been working towards the completion of his painting La belle Noiseuse for ten years Balzac explores the problem of the artist torn between the ecstasies of creation and the quest for perfection in execution" Catalogue raisonné p. 60. The novella was first published in the newspaper L'Artiste in 1831. Balzac revised the text various times firstly for another publication in late 1831 in the third volume of Romans et contes philosophiques secondly in 1832 in his Contes philosophiques a third time for publication in 1837 in Études philosophiques essentially its final form fourthly for publication in the Comédie humaine in 1846 and then finally in 1847 in Le provincial à Paris. Folio 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.; 324 x 246 mm. 13 etchings and 63 woodcuts including vignettes to covers and title extra suite of 12 etchings on Rives illustrated covers bound in. Edition limited to 340 copies this being copy number 31 of 65 deluxe copies on Japan paper signed by Picasso and Vollard and with the extra suite. Black morocco with multicolored inlaid design spine lettered doublures gilt with black and white fillets all edges gilt; chemise and slipcase. Signed Paul Bonet and dated 1955. The binding and contents are completely without flaw. Bonet here creates a dream-like binding that mirrors the contents of Balzac's novella and Picasso's illustrations. The book is housed in in a chemise lined with calfskin and slipcase in quarter morocco. Trivial shelf wear to the slipcase chemise carefully reinforced on an interior joint with a strip of japanese paper. "One of the world's most beautiful books." The complete portfolio comprising 12 etching and aquatints on Rives BFK paper; signed in pencil by the artist and Fernand Crommelynck on the justification; copy 66 of 200 with the hors-texte and text in French the full sheets 29 x 39.5 cm loose as issued contained in original oxblood leather-covered portfolio with the title on the spine. Picasso created the etchings in 1966 but they were not published until 1968. Sheet 11 x 15 inches; 290 x 395mm. Bloch 1244-1255; Baer. 1432-1443 Cramer 140. Included with this copy is a photograph of Fernand Crommelynck with a handwritten dedication to the Russian theater director Meyerhold dated June 1930 10 years before Stalin had him executed. The gilt-decorated paper-covered boards are clean and bright with a small area of faint foxing and one tiny rub mark. Internally the paper is near fine except for a 1 1/4" X 2 1/2" water stain on the free front endpaper that is reflected only faintly on the half-title page. The dust jacket is clean and bright with minor foxing 3 tiny areas of edge chipping and a 1" X 1 1/2" triangular wrinkle/tear on the back panel without paper loss.
