In 1951 Picasso and Laporte began an affair which lasted for two years and during which time the artist presented her with a number of his works. A poet and writer herself Laporte published her book 'Sunshine at Midnight: Memories of Picasso and Cocteau' in 1973.<br /><br />While Pablo Picasso never claimed to be a Surrealist his earlier Cubist works certainly laid the groundwork for such a movement to exist. By the time André Breton's 'Surrealist Manifesto' was published in 1924 Picasso was creating art with a similar surrealist style. The present work demonstrates Picasso's ceaseless desire to present an alternative to realism. The artist challenges our perception of portraiture and reality by capturing the woman's face in a simultaneous profile and frontal-facing perspective. Unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript of Brassai's account of his visit to Picasso A superb unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript in French in which Brassaï recounts his visit to Picasso a long-standing friend at his home near Cannes. Brassaï who photographed much of Picasso's work in the 1940s had published Conversations with Picasso in 1964 in which he created an intimate portrait of Picasso covering their friendship and artistic collaboration and recording each of their meetings with minute detail. Picasso said of the volume "Read this book if you want to understand me". This account is written in a similar style and during the course of the afternoon Picasso speaks about his nostalgia for his old studios his health his enthusiasm for the recently invented felt-tip pen his opinion of his own writings his relationship with his wife Jacqueline and his views on feminism. Though unmarked as such it is from the collection of Brassaï's close friend and colleague photographer Stefan Lorant who founded Picture Post the pioneering pictorial magazine. Quarto 285 x 233. 20 typed sheets in French rectos only legibly hand-corrected throughout by Brassai in black ink. Housed in a black cloth album with each sheet in a separate clear plastic file. In excellent condition the final page a little creased and with minor loss to right-hand side affecting one letter. Overall fresh and clean. hardcover‎

Pablo Picasso, der die französische Hauptstadt nach 19OO dreimal bereist hatte, ließ sich im April 1904 endgültig in Paris nieder. Von seinen vorherigen Aufenthalten kannte er die Künstlergemeinschaft auf dem Montmartre gut, hatte er doch schon 19OO in der Rue Gabrielle 49 und ein Jahr später im Atelier seines Freundes Carlos Casagemas an der Place de Clichy 130 gewohnt. Bei Picassos dritter Reise im Jahr 1902 quartierte er sich kurzzeitig in Montparnasse, einem Viertel auf der linken Seite der Seine ein, doch pflegte er dort nur wenige Freundschaften und fühlte sich unwohl, sodass er 1904 ganz bewusst die fast noch dörfliche Gegend Montmartres als dauerhafte Wohn- und Arbeitsstätte wählte. Gelegen im ehemals neunten, heute dem achtzehnten Arrondissement von Paris, hatte diese Gegend damals noch einen zweifelhaften Ruf, doch zogen bescheidene Mieten Künstler jeden Alters an. Hier fanden sich bereits seit 1860 französische und eine große Anzahl ausländischer Künstler aus Spanien, Italien oder Holland ein, die dem kosmopoliten Ruf von Paris folgten. Femme a la mandolin / The early phase of Analytical Cubism went into high gear in late 1909. Picasso began Girl with a Mandolin (Fanny Tellier) (Z. 11,235, D.346, fig. 6), a work he was never to complete, though it was in fact a prelude to Femme a la mandoline. Ostensibly the young model, Fanny, quit after numerous sittings. Picasso later remarked, "It may be just as well I left it as it is." Golding considers it of great importance that Picasso saw the work as unfinished. "The legibility of this canvas demonstrates conclusively that although Cubist paintings were becoming more abstract in appearance, the artists were still deeply conditioned at least in early stages of their works, by the material existence and the physical appearance of their subjects ... the painting illustrates in a very concrete fashion the pull Picasso felt between the desire to give forms an explicit, volumetrical treatment, and the need to flatten them up onto the picture plane." Golding believed that this work, if completed, would have become "more elaborate, more abstract and more consistent in style."7 In fact, it might well have become Femme a la mandoline, an ostensibly more hermetic, less accessible, but intensely lyrical version of the same theme. But first Picasso had to undergo a crucial initiation into the realities of three-dimensional form before he was to reach what Douglas Cooper has labelled the period of "high" Cubism ? (S. 12)‎

Sie geht zum Anfang der modernen Kunst zurück, der uns zeitlich so fern und in seiner Wirkung immer noch ganz nah ist. Unsere Ausstellung wählt eine Form - den Querschnitt durch das Schaffen aus einem Jahr -, die nicht neu ist, aber sie beschränkt sich auf Figurenbild und Porträt. Und sie zeigt von jedem Künstler nur ein Kunstwerk (allein von Picasso wurde eine Werkgruppe versammelt). Es ist das Jahr 1909. Nicht das Jahr des Aufbruchs 1907, wie es Amsterdam gewählt hatte, nicht die erste Reife 1912 - das Kölner Datum. 1909 ist das Jahr, in dem Picasso den Kopf zerbrochen hat. Das Jahr 1909 ist in Picassos Biographie durch den Aufenthalt in Horta de Ebro von Mai bis Anfang September ausgezeichnet. Bereits elf Jahre zuvor war Picasso in jenem südkatalanischen Dorf in der Provinz Tarragona, das seit 1910 Horta de San Juan heißt, gewesen, damals mit Manuel Pallarés, der von dort stammte. Die vier Monate in Horta brachten Picasso einen entscheidenden Schritt auf seinem Weg voran. Hier vollzog sich in den Kopfbildern, was Daix unter der Überschrift Horta de Ebro et la mise au point du découpage en facettes als Zerschneiden in Facetten und Aufbrechen der Oberflächen in Facetten bezeichnet hat. Daix fährt fort: Die ganze hohe Zeit des Kubismus von Picasso und Braque kommt dorther. Von Werner Hofmanns auslösender Idee an bestand die Absicht, Picasso durch einen Vergleich mit Zeitgenossen zu ehren. Und von Anfang an hieß das, nicht ein Treffen der Avantgarde zu arrangieren, sondern Werke von Künstlern zu versammeln, die Wesentliches zum Thema beizutragen hatten, ob jung oder alt, ob neumodisch oder altmodisch.‎
