Christ of Caprarola. Original Engraving After Carraci.
c1665-1690. Extremely rare. Fine impression beautiful original engraving with large margins and fine detailed lines. Contemporary ink notes on verso no affect at all. Loose without matting. Body of Christ lying on the ground his head resting on the Vrigin supported by another Mary; with St. John holding Christ’s left hand and displaying its wound to St. Mary Magdalene. Stunning and very rare. Suitable for framing. 17 x 13.5 cm. Lairesse 1641-1711 born in Liege second son of painter Renier. Known for a facial deformity some will state syphilis Rembrandt’s portrait of Gerard at age 25 is a famous one. He was influenced by Rembrandt and later French neo-classical. In 1690 he lost his sight and concentrated on art theory. A draughtsman theatrical designer writer and theoretician he is best known as the celebrated Dutch painter in the years to follow Rembrandt’s death. Lairesse shows more detail and finer lines than Carracci in this beautiful scene which is in reverse of Carracci’s original. We attribute this work to Lairesse by the original auction purchase of this print over 20 years ago. Though we find no other copies of this print in any institutions reference citations or for sale at time of description. It appears to be extremely rare. unknown

Volume solido e ben conservato.

1 23x16.3 cm., 11, [1], 255, [1], 71, [1], 40, [8] pp., bel frontespizio inciso che include il ritratto del Tasso in medaglione e una veduta di Genova, il tutto entro bordura architettonica, i venti canti illustrati da 20 magnifiche incisioni a piena pagina disegnate dal pittore genovese Bernardo Castello e incise da Agostino Carracci (9) e da Giacomo Franco (11), legatura seicentesca in pergamena con titolo manoscritto al dorso, sguardie settecentesche, leggermente smarginato, lievi fioriture e bruniture uniformi, leggero alone ad alcune pagine, tracce di tarlo al margine inferiore di diverse carta senza pregiudizio, un rinforzo al margine interno al verso del frontespizio, restauro senza pregiudizio al margine esterno di pag. 245, nel complesso buon esemplare Prima edizione illustrata dal Castello, con la tavola del Canto Quarto non duplicata con quella del Canto Quinto. Gamba, 426: "Stimatissima edizione, principalmente per l'ornamento delle figure? E' da osservare che nel canto IV non sia duplicata la figura che sta nel canto V?".
