Jean Chardin
Voyages de Mr. le Chevalier Chardin
Amsterdam: Jean Louis de Lorme 1711. First edition. Leather. Good. 7" by 4.5". Not Stated. The scarce first complete ten volume edition of Chardin"s celebrated travels in Persia and the East offering a detailed early European account of Persia in the late 17th century. In the original French.Complete with all ten volumes bound in five. The first complete edition of Jean Chardin's travel works with this edition bringing together Chardin"s travels in Persia and the East including material not present in the earlier partial publications of the late seventeenth century. The work provides detailed accounts of Safavid Persia including its court customs commerce and cities such as Isfahan together with observations on neighbouring regions and travel routes. Chardin"s narrative is noted for its descriptive and ethnographic detail based on repeated journeys in the region. Illustrated with: one portrait plate to volume I; four plates to volume VI three of which are folding; three to volume VIII two of which are folding; five folding plates to volume IX.Collated lacking seventy-two engraved plates and folding letterpress leaves. In place of these contemporary blank leaves are supplied captioned with what the plate should be. So rather interesting - if disappointing. Pwerhaps a very early proof printing before the plates were finalised. Priced accordingly. But still handsome contemporary bindings or an important work. In contemporary calf bindings with gilt detailing to back strips and with former owner's inscriptions to a front blank of each volume.A principal early European source on Persia widely regarded as one of the most important travel accounts of the Near East. In contemporary calf bindings with gilt detailing to back strip. Rubbing to joints raised bands and back strip heads and tails. Lacking volume V spine label. Volume II joints head of volume III rear joint head of volume IV joints and head of rear joint of volume V starting with boards firmly held. Front hinge of volume I strained but firmly held. Inscription to a front free endpaper of each volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned with the odd spot and handling mark throughout. Lacking seventy-two engraved plates and folding letterpress leaves. Good Jean Louis de Lorme hardcover

Jean S Chardin
Jean Simeon Chardin 1699-1779 Gebundene AusgabeJean S. Chardin Autor
Hatje Cantz Verlag 2002. 2002. Hardcover.

Only the first of ten volumes was translated into English which was published concurrently with the French version; this volume covers the author's journey from Paris to Ispahan and contains the author's half-length portrait by Loggan in addition to 18 copper plates mostly folding. In 1664 Chardin started for the East Indies and journeyed by Constantinople and the Black Sea reaching Persia in 1666. That same year the shah Abbas II made Chardin his agent for the purchase of jewels. In the middle of 1667 Chardin visited India and returned to Persia in 1669. The next year he arrived in Paris. He issued an account of some events to which he was an eyewitness in Persia entitled 'Le Couronnement de Soleiman Troisième' Paris 1671. A learned nobleman Mirza Sefi a prisoner in his own palace at Isfahan had entertained Chardin instructed him in the Persian language and assisted him in this work.
Chardin again started for the East in 1671 and was at Constantinople from March to July of 1672. A quarrel between the grand vizier and the French ambassador made the position of French subjects dangerous and Chardin escaped across the Black Sea. He stayed at Ispahan for four years and made various journeys throughout the land from the Caspian to the Persian Gulf and the river Indus visiting several Indian cities.
In 1681 Chardin emigrated to England and a few years later he was appointed to the East India Company; during this time he had a chance to work on the publication of his memoirs assisted by John Evelyn.

Size: Narrow Folio Illustration: A very good example of this First English Edition of Chardin’s voyages. Complete with 19 engraved plates and maps; including a frontispiece portrait of the author engraved titlepage a map of the Black Sea and surrounding countries an important map of Iran and 16 numbered plates of which 12 folding.
