MATISSE Henri; NAU John Antoine; HENRI MATISSE
Poesies Antillaises.
1972. MATISSE Henri. Poesies Antillaises. By John-Antoine Nau. 90 ff. Illustrated with 28 full-page portrait lithographs and a further 27 hors-texte ornaments by Matisse. Folio 383 x 292 mm loose as issued in the publisher's wrappers and cardboard slipcase. Paris: Mourlot 1972. Matisse conceived of this work as an homage to his close friend John-Antoine Nau and as he had done with Charles d'Orleans and Ronsard he personally selected the poems that moved him most. As Matisse and the poet shared a common love for Martinique Matisse worked from Martiniquan models as well as Malagashan models for the illustrations. Matisse prepared the illustrations for this book in 1946 and a contract to publish the edition was drawn up with Mourlot in 1947. Matisse worked on and off on the production maquette for Poesies Antillaises from 1950 to 1953. However due in large measure to the artist's ill health at the end of his life publication was delayed until almost twenty years after his death. One of 200 regular copies. A superb copy of this magnificent book which is similar in feel to Florilège published by Skira in 1948. Duthuit Henri Matisse Les Ouvrages Illustrés No. 37. From Manet to Hockney No. 129. unknown books

Jackie Matisse : Jeux d'espace
Paris: Bernard Chauveau Editeur 2013. Softcover. As New. White card wraps with color illus. and yellow/red lettering. Color-pictorial French flaps. 119 pp. with 100 color and several bw images. Catalogue from the exhibition held July to September 2013 at Musee Matisse Le Cateau-Dambresis. Most text in French; some in English. "Jackie Matisse granddaughter of Henri Matisse and daughter of Pierre Matisse who had a famous gallery in New York was born in 1931. This immense filiation and her father's position meant she was in contact very early with the most important artists of that period Alexander Calder Roberto Matta Joan Miró . and thereby able to nourish her research on the most experimental of the artistic 'avant-gardes'. She started working alongside Marcel Duchamp and then worked with artists as different as the composer David Tudor the dancer Merce Cunningham and her friends from the Nouveaux Réalistes movement. Her works essentially kites composed of light material and recycled objects are both heteroclite and unexpected. Jackie Matisse's sensitive free-minded lush world is perfectly described by the artist herself: 'My artistic activity enabled me to explore the elements and to indulge in my fascination with space movement and chance either in the air or below water. Watching and making the kites fly brought me a feeling of freedom a means of collaborating with others and with nature and an open door to the immensity of life through my vision.
