The result of research conducted on two fronts--conservation and curatorial--the catalogue offers a reconsideration of the cut-outs by exploring a host of technical and conceptual issues: the artist's methods and materials and the role and function of the works in his practice; their economy of means and exploitation of decorative strategies; their environmental aspects; and their double lives first as contingent and mutable in the studio and ultimately made permanent a transformation accomplished via mounting and framing. Richly illustrated to present the cut-outs in all of their vibrancy and luminosity the book includes an introduction and a conservation essay that consider the cut-outs from new theoretical and technical perspectives and five thematic essays each focusing on a different moment in the development of the cut-out practice that provide a chronicle of this radical medium's unfolding and period photographs that show the works in process in Matisse's studio.<BR>One of modern art's towering figures Henri Matisse 1869-1954 was a painter draftsman sculptor and printmaker before turning to paper cut-outs in the 1940s. Malgrado il cancro diagnosticato nel 1941, il progressivo indebolimento e la costrizione sulla sedia a rotelle, l'indomito francese non smise mai di fare ricerca artistica. In quella che chiamava une seconde vie, una seconda vita, intraprese uno straordinario "periodo dei collage" tagliando e incollando pezzi di carta colorata per realizzare gouaches découpées di uccelli, piante, fiori e forme femminili. Ponendo l'accento su colore e contrasto, la tecnica del ritaglio generava linee singolari e vividi accostamenti. In opere come La caduta di Icaro (1943), Nudo blu (1952), La lumaca (1953) e Il fascio (1953), forme nitide e strutture elementari alimentano una forza compositiva che cela il fascino decorativo dell'opera, al contempo rigorosamente strutturata e pervasa di una contagiosa gioia di vivere. Man mano che il lavoro procedeva, l'entusiasmo di Matisse per i risultati ottenuti lo spinse a realizzare opere sempre più grandi, passando da piccoli esemplari a enormi murali delle dimensioni di una parete. Man mano che si avvicinava alla fine della vita, l'artista godeva sempre più della luminosa semplicità di queste opere, ammettendo: "Solo ciò che ho creato dopo la malattia rappresenta ciò che sono veramente: libero, liberato...". In questo indispensabile volume introduttivo rivisitiamo il lieto capitolo finale della lunga e prodigiosa carriera di Matisse, analizzando come nei ritagli sia racchiuso tutto il percorso dell'artista grazie all'esplorazione delle possibilità che offrono a livello formale, cromatico e compositivo.
