Lotto comprensivo di 188 stampe in nero originali, presumibilmente di diversa provenienza, tutte raffiguranti soggetti classici (prevalentemente religiosi e mitologici) ricavati da grandi autori quali Raffaello, Michelangelo, Rubens, Reni, Leonardo Da Vinci, ... Stampate in Francia, non datate ma, presumibilmente, risalenti ai primi decenni dell'800. Dimensioni: 12 x 18 cm all'incirca. Stato di conservazione: Qualche inevitabile ossidazione della carta, alcune stampe presentano piccole mancanze o tagleitti sui margini, alcune presentano i margini un po' rifilati, due o tre stampe (in totale) presentano una scritta apenna sul margine bianco ma, nell'insieme, un lotto ben conservato Si vedano le fotografie che fanno parte integrante della descrizione. Nato in Germania si trasferisce giovanissimo con la famiglia ad Anversa, dove passa dal protestantesimo al cattolicesimo. Nel 1600 compie un viaggio in Italia, dove rimane otto anni tra Mantova, Venezia, Roma e Genova. La sua formazione classica si indirizza verso lo stile che contribuisce a formare, il Barocco. Diviene il prototipo dell'artista ricco e famoso, colto e ben introdotto nelle corti di tutta Europa. Il suo stile elegante, solenne e teatrale, capace di tenere insieme naturalismo e piacevolezza decorativa detterà le regole della pittura per l'intero secolo XVII.

L'attenzione per la cultura italiana costituì per Rubens un costante riferimento durante tutta la vita e, in particolare, gli otto anni di soggiorno in Italia furono l'occasione per studiare l'arte antica e i grandi maestri rinascimentali, ma anche per guardare le opere di artisti a lui contemporanei, come Caravaggio e Baglione, per analizzare l'architettura, per frequentare circoli scientifici e letterari. Una così evidente fascinazione nei confronti della civiltà italica ha prodotto una vera miniera archivistica, iconografica e stilistica attraverso la quale interpretare non solo la pittura, ma anche il sistema di rapporti diplomatici e di relazione che Rubens perseguì nel corso di tutta la vita. Molti legami fondamentali per la carriera del maestro d'Anversa ebbero inizio o si intensificarono proprio durante gli anni italiani, con collezionisti romani e genovesi, ma anche con personaggi politici stranieri, come la famiglia Richardot e i governatori delle Fiandre, e con ordini religiosi quali Gesuiti, Filippini e Carmelitani.

Il volume è il catalogo della mostra omonima allestita a Genova presso il Palazzo Ducale dal 6 ottobre 2022 al 22 gennaio 2023, una straordinaria esposizione per raccontare la grandezza del massimo pittore barocco di sempre: Peter Paul Rubens e il suo rapporto con la città. Il progetto nasce in occasione del quarto centenario della pubblicazione ad Anversa del celebre volume di Rubens Palazzi di Genova (1622). Rubens soggiornò in diverse occasioni a Genova tra il 1600 e il 1607 ed ebbe così modo di intrattenere rapporti diretti - e in alcuni casi molto stretti - con i più ricchi e influenti aristocratici della città. In mostra e nel catalogo sono presentate più di 150 opere, tra le quali hanno il ruolo di protagonisti oltre venti Rubens provenienti da musei e collezioni europee e italiane (con alcuni 'rientri' molto significativi), che si sommano a quelli presenti in città, giungendo così a un numero come non vi era dalla fine del Settecento a Genova; da quando, cioè, la crisi dell'aristocrazia con i contraccolpi della Rivoluzione Francese diede avvio a un'inesorabile diaspora di capolavori verso le collezioni del mondo. A partire dal nucleo rubensiano, il racconto del contesto culturale e artistico della città nell'epoca del suo maggiore splendore viene completato da dipinti degli autori che Rubens per certo vide e studiò (Tintoretto e Luca Cambiaso); che incontrò in Italia e in particolare a Genova durante il suo soggiorno (Frans Pourbus il Giovane, Sofonisba Anguissola e Bernardo Castello), o con cui collaborò (Jan Wildens e Frans Snyders). Disegni, incisioni, arazzi, arredi, volumi antichi, perfino abiti, accessori femminili e gioielli consentono di celebrare la grandiosità di una capitale artistica visitata da uno dei maggiori artisti di tutti i tempi e confermano quell'appellativo di Superba che fu dato a Genova. Il catalogo è riccamente illustrato e dà conto del lungo percorso di studi e approfondimenti scientifici da parte dei curatori e i saggi tematici vedono i contributi di un consistente numero di studiosi internazionali. ill., br. Al "benigno lettore" il pittore fiammingo Pietro Paolo Rubens presenta i Palazzi di Genova in un volume pubblicato a proprie spese ad Anversa, la sua città. Un progetto editoriale che giunge al quarto centenario e ancora fa parlare di sé, catalizza l'interesse di studiosi, critici, addetti ai lavori e non. Più che "well travelled" all'età di quarantacinque anni ancora da compiere, il fiammingo aveva già visto buona parte dei centri artistici (e di potere) in Europa: Roma, Mantova, Genova, Firenze, Padova, Venezia, Madrid, Valladolid tra il 1600 e il 1608, senza contare quanto vide in patria. Ha incontrato re, principi, duchi, ambasciatori, conti e marchesi. Ha frequentato finanzieri, mercanti e condottieri. Era elegante e conosceva sette lingue, tra le quali il latino e l'italiano. Aveva un "gustoso e vivace colorito" e un "tratto gentile" e lo fregiavano "nobili doti", tra le quali la "facondia del parlare". Eppure, fu Genova e la ristretta élite dei genovesi che ebbe modo di incontrare ad apparirgli quanto di più moderno. Erano qualcosa di inedito ai suoi occhi i palazzi di città e le tante ville a pochi chilometri da quel centro che oggi chiamiamo "storico" e che allora era il cuore pulsante della vita economica e finanziaria che gravitava sul porto, abbracciato naturalmente ad arco da un fitto reticolo di strade strette e buie.

Salomè con la testa di San Giovanni Battista
Bulino misure: mm 280 x 230 Incisore attivo a Venezia. Fratello di Guglielmo e padre di Suor Isabella, entrambi incisori. Thieme-Becker registra diversi ritratti incisi da Pecini o Piccini spesso editi da Scolari. In questa stampa, tratta da un invenzione di Paul Rubens, vengono rappresentati Salomè, Erodiade, Erode e la sola testa del Battista. Il Battista è uno dei profeti dell’Antico Testamento, il primo Apostolo di Gesù, eremita e predicatore battezzava i suoi discepoli nelle acque del Giordano presso la confluenza col Mar Morto. La vicenda biblica è nota: Erode turbato dal ballo sensuale di Salomè le promette di soddisfare qualsiasi suo desiderio, Salomè allora, per compiacere la madre Erodiade, chiede di avere su un vassoio la testa di Giovanni Battista già in prigione per aver precedentemente osato condannare il comportamento di Erode. La scena si svolge all'oscurità della prigione, le figure si staccano dallo sfondo caratterizzato da una colonna e una finestra con le sbarre. Attraverso un gioco di sguardi cercano di coinvolgere lo spettatore, solo quello di Salomè è incosciente. Gli abiti dei tre personaggi sono riccamente e abilmente descritti; le acconciature raffinate, i gioielli e l'armatura scintillante. Anche la testa del Battista ha lo sguardo sofferente, dall'occhio semi aperto la pupilla è rivolta allo spettatore. Oltre l'immagine nel margine inferiore bianco incisi il titolo e le firme "P.P. Rubens pinx", "Stefano Scolari forma" "I. Pecini ... Venetiis". Si intuisce che prima di Venetiis doveva esserci una scritta ormai cancellata. L'indicazione dello stampatore è più nera delle altre scritte, perciò si tratta di un esemplare in stato successivo al primo. L'esemplare conservato presso il MET, infatti, reca la scritta "J. Pecini sculp et excudit Venetiis". Dunque il presente esemplare è nel II stato, senza l'excudit di Piccini e con l'indirizzo di Scolari stampatore bresciano attivo a Venezia dal 1660.
