Traces de pli transversales inhérentes à l'envoi. Renoir rédige cette missivedans sa maison des Collettes à Cagnes,qui vit naîtredes uvres d'une grande sensualité, et où il s'essaya également à la sculpture : « Cher ami J'ai vu ta lettre avec plaisir je me porte à merveille et ce matin reçu lettre de Jean [Renoir] qui se repose quelques jours. Je t'écrirai plus longuement bientôt, tâche surtout malgré tous les ennuis de bien te porter. A toi » On retrouvera, quelques semaines plus tard, ce même enthousiasme de Renoir dans les mémoires de son fils Jean, touché peu après cette lettre par une balle allemande : « Mon père m'attendait dans son fauteuil roulant. Il y avait déjà plusieurs années qu'il ne marchait plus. Je le trouvais beaucoup plus recroquevillé qu'à mon départ pour le front. Par contre, son expression était d'une vivacité extrême. Il m'avait entendu sur le palier et rayonnait de sa malice heureuse. Ses yeux semblaient dire: 'cette fois ils t'ont bien raté!' ». Lettre autographe signée d'Auguste Renoir, datée de sa main du 5 février 1909.2 pages à l'encre noire sur un bifeuillet. Tracede pli horizontalinhérentà l'envoi. Renoir rédige cette missive dans sa maison des Collettes à Cagnes, qui vit naître des uvres d'une grande sensualité, et où il s'essaya également à la sculpture. Le peintre commande des pinceaux et mentionne ici la venue de la famille du docteur Emile Baudot, son médecin de longue date et médecin-chef de la Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest. Renoir eut comme unique élève la fille du vénérable docteur, Jeanne Baudot, dont il fit le portrait et qui posa aux côtés de son maître pour une toile de Maurice Denis. Maurice Gangnat était un mécène, grand collectionneur d'art et ami intime de Renoir,qu'il rencontra en 1904 par l'entremise de Paul Gallimard. Lorsque celui-ci le présenta à Renoir, ses tableaux l'enthousiasmèrent tant qu'il en acheta immédiatement douze, au prix de vingt-mille francs .Il avait l'instinct du connaisseur, et Renoir lui laissait choisir chaque printemps le meilleur de sa production : "Il a l'oeil " disait-il de lui. Gangnat acheta entre 1905 et 1917 cent-quatre-vingt tableaux lors de ses séjours aux Collettes, dont trente-six paysages de Cagnes et de ses environs. "Cher Monsieur Gangnat, Je retrouve sur ma table une lettre que je croyais depuis longtemps à la porte. Je vous disais que j'avais reçu un avis de la Banque marseillaise ou vous avez eu l'obligeance de déposer de l'argent pour moi et que je vous renverrais (?) Je prends la liberté de vous charger de m'apporter un paquet de pinceaux. Millaudvous les apportera chez vous. Nous comptons toujours sur vous le plus tôt possible. Les Baudot doivent me faire leur visite annuel vers le commencement de mars. Ce pauvre docteur est replacé à la gare Saint Lazare. Ce mois-ci il s'y attendait. [...] J'espère que vous êtes en bonne santé et prévenez nous pour vous aller chercher à la gare. Lettre autographe signée "R" d'Auguste Renoir adressée à son ami et grand collectionneur de ses oeuvres Paul Berard. Une page et demi à l'encre noire sur un bifeuillet. Tracede pli transversaleinhérenteà l'envoi. * Renoir rédige cette missive au diplomate et banquier Paul Bérard, l'une des figures les plus importantes de sa carrière de peintre, commanditaire de pas moins d'une dizaine de toiles, avec qui il entretiendra une correspondance sur plusieurs décennies. Cest chez cet ami intime, dans le château de Wargemont non loin de Dieppe. que Renoir peint un nombre de ses chefs-duvre, célèbres paysages et portraits des membres de la famille Bérard ("quelques un de ses portraits les plus vivants et les plus insolites" Anne Distel), leurs cousins, et même leur concierge. Trois ans plus tôt, le peintre avait voyagé sur les traces des peintres hollandais avec Bérard, en compagnie de Claude Monet et du marchand Durand-Ruel. A l'écriture de cette lettre, Renoir fait séjour Sud de la France, afin de soulager ses rhumatismes qui l'ont finalement poussé, dans la dernière partie de sa vie, à explorer avec brio le médium de la sculpture. Il mentionne le Grand Hôtel des Colonies et des Négociants à Cannes, qu'il fréquentait souvent lors de ces déplacements dans la région. Il pourrait s'agir d'une lettre du printemps 1901 - par sa correspondance avec Durand-Ruel, il est connu que Renoir a effectivement séjourné dans cet hôtel cannois à cette date. Egalement conformément à notre missive, sa femme Aline partira au même moment à Essoyes, son pays natal, avec leur fils Jean, futur cinéaste de renom. Au début de l'été, quelques semaines après cette lettre, Renoir recevra la Légion d'honneur des mains de son destinataire Paul Bérard, qu'il avait choisi pour lui remettre la plus haute décoration française. "Cher ami Un peu moins abruti ce matin. Je pense pouvoir vous donner quelques renseignements. Je pense pouvoir faire mes paquets demain dimanche et descendre lundi soir à l'hôtel des Négociants à Cannes en face [sic] la gare. Ma femme partirait pour son pays avec Jean et je resterai quelques jours seul. Si tout cela n'est pas dérangé par une quinzième grippe subitte [sic]. J'espère cependant me retapper [sic] suffisamment pour pouvoir circuler un peu avec vous. R. Serai Lundi pour diner à l'hôtel" Charmant billet du grand peintre à l'un de ses plus grands collectionneurs. Ce document très visuel date d'une période décisive dans la réception de l'oeuvre de Renoir, auquel on remet la légion d'honneur quelques semaines plus tard. et dont les oeuvres apparaissent enfin dans les collections des musées français.
