The original string binding is lost; a former owner kept the book together with 3-hole ribbon ties only one still present. Rear cover detached; tears creases and small paper loss to covers with very modest soiling from page turning; 3 inch closed tear to one page repaired with archival tape. Name and date in pencil inside front cover; also rubber stamp imprint "Okolona O." Color plates remain bright and engaging. A retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. The story told is of the loss of a one-legged tin soldier out a window and into a gutter and out to sea with happy ending the eventual return to the home he had lived in. Whimsical and beautifully illustrated book. Condition is fair only as described but nonetheless a fascinating book with color illustrations of a very high order both in their execution and in the color printing process. An uncommon book. . There is no date of publication in the book; however an inscription in ink on the front free endpaper is dated 1895. On verso of front cover is small emblem identifying the book as being sold by C. A. Rohde Company of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Rohde also published in 1896 a color fold-out view book of Milwaukee that was printed by Louis Glasep Leipzig Germany.
