Le sue stampe per più di un secolo costituirono il canone della perfezione grafica e servirono da modelli per infinite altre stampe, come pure per dipinti, sculture, smalti, arazzi, placche e porcellane, non solo in Germania, ma anche in Italia, in Francia, nei Paesi Bassi, in Russia, in Spagna e, indirettamente, persino in Persia. L'immagine di Dürer, come quella di quasi tutti i grandi, è cambiata secondo l'epoca e la mentalità in cui si è riflessa, ma sebbene le qualità distintive della sua innegabile grandezza furono variamente definite, questa grandezza fu riconosciuta subito e mai messa in dubbio».

Blind stamp decorated black calf over bevelled boards with brass cartouche to front board and gilt titles to front board and spine. Edges lightly rubbed and corners bumped. All page edges bright gilt. Original marbled endpapers. Double gilt rules to turn-ins. Foxing to free-endpapers and title page. Ornate ink name within decorated border: "Ellen Davis Nov. 22nd 1866". Clean pages throughout just the odd brown spot un-paginated with woodcut page borders of designs after Holbein D�rer and his contemporaries. Plus a woodcut portrait of Elizabeth at prayer to verso of the title-leaf. A very good copy of this Whittingham printing a classic of Victorian book production supposedly imitative of Queen Elizabeth's prayer book. Referenced by: Griffiths 1863/22 . .
