Contemporary panel-stamped reversed calf with traces of gilt stamping early repairs to spine ends clasps present and intact endpapers renewed at some point. Some rubbing to extremities chipping to head of spine a few scuffs and stains to boards small crack to front joint rear hinge cracked due to worming minor worming to fol. 208. Allegorical frontispiece by Durer featuring Lady Justice and a female figure representing charity attractive woodcut decorated initials throughout. Light toning to text some leaves lightly browned faint stains and foxing to a few leaves wide margins. "1522/ jahre" to title page in near-contemporary hand interior otherwise clean. $12500. First edition and only edition with Durer's frontispiece which includes an image of Lady Justice. This was the first time her image appeared in a book. Nuremberg was the center of the Renaissance in Germany and was its leading cultural and intellectual center until the end of the sixteenth century. These qualities are reflected in the contents and design of this volume. Enacted in 1479 the Reformacion or Reformed Civic Legal Code of Nuremberg is known for its humanistic orientation straightforward language and elegant production. It is also notable as the collection of German city laws to be issued in print. The 1522 issue by Peypus is notable for its splendid full-page frontispiece by the great Nuremberg artist Albrecht Durer which was originally issued as an independent print in 1521. The bottom half depicts two putti displaying the arms of the city and empire. The upper half depicts Lady Justice holding scales and a sword and a female figure representing charity who is pouring coins from a purse and opening her bodice to bear her heart which is represented by a flame. The woodcut initials are finely carved and possibly the work of Durer or his workshop. OCLC locates 4 copies in North America 1 in a law library Harvard. In the years 1508 to 1511 Albrecht Dürer created three famous sets of engravings two Passion of Christ and the Life of Mary. Among them the Passio Christi known as the "Small Passion" to distunguished it from the one with bigger format is considered DÜRER'S MASTERPIECE. <br /> This edition was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Albrech Dürer's birth. It includes 37 images including the engraving on the frontispiece and is notable for the artist's focus on the essence of depiction. The works were cut in wood by the Italian master-engraver Leonardo Farina. As in the first and very rare 1511 edition this volume's verses are in latin commissioned by Dürer for this work from the monk Benedictus Chelidonius / Benedikt Schwalbe. The Italian translation by the poet Enzio Cetrangolo is included in the book as well as an essay by the publisher Giovanni Mardersteig on the work of Dürer and the verses of Benedikt Schwalbe. Le sue stampe per più di un secolo costituirono il canone della perfezione grafica e servirono da modelli per infinite altre stampe, come pure per dipinti, sculture, smalti, arazzi, placche e porcellane, non solo in Germania, ma anche in Italia, in Francia, nei Paesi Bassi, in Russia, in Spagna e, indirettamente, persino in Persia. L'immagine di Dürer, come quella di quasi tutti i grandi, è cambiata secondo l'epoca e la mentalità in cui si è riflessa, ma sebbene le qualità distintive della sua innegabile grandezza furono variamente definite, questa grandezza fu riconosciuta subito e mai messa in dubbio».

Dal titolo stesso del saggio si comprende come il capolavoro di Dürer sia chiamato a svolgere la funzione di metafora la cui intelligenza, anche se immediata, richiede anche il supporto di un'attenta esegesi affinché se ne possano ricavare le più nascoste significazioni. Si scopre allora come un'opera artistica divenga stimolo di riflessione politica, o meglio meta-politica. A uomini condannati ad avanzare insieme a compagni scomodi come la Morte e il Diavolo qui si propone un'alternativa al di fuori di vie liberticide ed in grado di affermarsi sul fondamento di valori come dignità, decoro, onore e fedeltà, calpestati dalle masse e dai capi-popolo come dalla catena di ottusi consumatori, imbroglioni, sfruttatori e demagoghi.
