Portrait accompagné dun double feuillet contenant la notice biographique du célèbre critique littéraire, rédigée par Ch. Vendryes et, en fac-similé,une lettre autographe de Sainte-Beuve au biographe. On joint également la couverture papier originelle de la livraison (27,5 x 37 cm), imprimée et illustrée d'une composition à figures allégoriques de Claverie et Tellier, ainsi que de nombreuses publicités.(Imprimerie Bernard).‎

‎Bel état du portrait (hormis deux infimes traces d'encre), quelques rares piqûres et rousseurs sur la notice biographique et la chemise de livraison (laquelle présente de petits accidents en bordures de marges). Publiée de 1876 à 1884, la collection complète de la Galerie Contemporaine, littéraire, artistique, compte 242 biographies illustrées de 410 photographies, dont 241 portraits reproduits en photoglyptie par la maison Goupil et Cie. La photoglyptie, ou woodburytype, est un procédé opto-mécanique de reproduction et d'impression d'images photographiques inventé par le Britannique Walter Bentley Woodbury en 1864. Inaltérable, diffusable en grand nombre car bien moins coûteux que les tirages argentiques, ce procédé connut pendant trente ans un énorme succès dans la presse et lédition. En effet, il était pratiquement impossible de distinguer le tirage en photoglyptie de la photographie originale ! Goupil et Cie fit appel aux grands noms de la photographie de lépoque pour réaliser les portraits de célébrités contemporaines, notamment : Les Photographies sont de : Antoine Samuel Adam-Salomon ; Eugène Appert ; Charles Bertall ; Bertall et Cie ; Numa Blanc ; Adolphe Block ; Boussod, Valadon et Cie ; Alphonse Braun ; Étienne Carjat ; Franck ; Jacques Edmond Maurice Lecadre ; Augustin Aimé Joseph Le Jeune ; Fernand Lochart ; Charles Marville ; Achille Mélandri ; Mulnier ; Félix Nadar ; Étienne Neurdein ; Pierre Petit ; etc. Jusquen 1880, 236 livraisons hebdomadaires proposent en alternance 2 séries, la première consacrée aux peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs, graveurs, architectes, etc., la deuxième aux littérateurs, prosateurs, poètes, musiciens, etc. En 1881, un nouveau titre (Galerie contemporaine artistique : Peintres & sculpteurs, Nouvelle série) accompagne une nouvelle périodicité, bimensuelle. Certains portraits seront repris en collections, après 1884 : par exemple par Paul Lacroix (le bibliophile Jacob), qui sassocie au relieur Magnier pour proposer une édition bibliophilique en 8 volumes, la Galerie contemporaine des illustrations françaises. Baschet lui-même en rééditera, non seulement dans sa Revue illustrée en 1888, mais aussi au sein dune collection alphabétique de 7 volumes, rassemblant 222 peintres et sculpteurs, inscrite au catalogue de sa librairie en 1890 comme Album de la Galerie contemporaine : biographies et portraits.
