n.p.: Warner Bros 1960. PRESENTATION SCRIPT. Hardcover. A near fine copy with minor blemishes and a few scratches. Marked "Final Screenplay" April 11 1960 148pp. Directed by Vincent J. Donehue with a screenplay by Dore Schary who produced the film and the play. The film starred Ralph Bellamy Greer Garson Hume Cronyn and Ann Shoemaker. An ALS is bound in from Dore Schary to first assistant director Russ Saunders dated August 5 1960 "Dear Russ / Thanks my good friend / you were a tower of strength / and good sense / Best Dore." Three black and white film stills are bound in including the great one of Bellamy clenching a cigarette in a holder as F.D.R. This is the story of Franklin Roosevelt's bout with polio at age 39 in 1921 and how his family especially his wife Eleanor coped with his illness. From being stricken while vacationing at Campobello to his triumphant nominating speech for Al Smith's presidency in 1924. The story follows the various influences on his life and his determination to recover. The film was nominated for four Oscars; Best Actress Art Direction Sound and Costume Design. Despite it being perhaps Bellamy's most famous role it was Greer Garson who received the critical acclaim. She won the Golden Globe and National Board of Review Award for Best Actress. <br/><br/> Warner Bros hardcover books

Schary 1905-1980 born August 31 1905 Newark New Jersey; died July 7 1980 New York New York; American writer/producer of films; winner of the Best Screenplay Academy Award for "Boys' Town" 1938; producer at MGM 1941-1945; head of production at RKO 1945-48; head of production at MGM 1948-1956; independent producer thereafter. Swanson 1900-91 one of the nation's most famous literary agents; known in the industry as "Swanie"; wrote and produced a handful of films after David O. Autograph Note Signed
This American screenwriter director producer and playwright co-authored the screenplay for "Boys Town" winning an Academy Award for Best Writing; in 1948 he became chief of production at MGM Studios ascending to the presidency in 1951 with the departure of Louis B. Mayer filling that office until 1956; among his plays are the Tony Award-winning "Sunrise at Campobello" for which he also wrote the screenplay. ANS 1p 7¼" X 10½" n.p. n.y. 1966. Fine. Near the bottom of a one sentence typed note dated 6 April 1966 sent him by noted Lincoln Scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 on letterhead of "The Civil War Round Table of New York" Schary pens a bold reply in blue ballpoint. Gates had asked Schary "If you can make this one I would be very pleased to have you attend as my guest" referring no doubt to a Civil War Round Table guest lecture -- to which Schary replied "Dear Mr. Gates -- I would have enjoyed being there -- by some breakdown of U.S. Postal Service -- your invitation reached me on the 20th of April -- Perhaps next time -- Thanks -- Dore Schary." Most unusual in this form! Schary produced the 1955 documentary "The Battle of Gettysburg" hence his proven interest in the topic. unknown

New York: Robert Whitehead & Roger Stevens 1962. A touch of weaer to wrapper eges; very good. 4to 108 miegraphed pages bolt bound in printed leatherette wrappers of the Studio Duplicating Service. Schary based this play on his own experience working in the Hollywood studio system at MGM. It starred Ed Begley and Carol Ohmart and was meant to open at the Music Box Theatre in October 1962 but it never made it to Brodway closing after a series of regional test-runs.
