Composition réalisée par Gustave Doré et gravée par Jules Fagnion sur chine et contrecollée sur vergé de Hollande à la demande de l'éditeur Hetzel pour illustrer son édition in-folio des Contes de Perrault en 1862. Excellent état. Ces illustrations des Contes sont considérées comme les plus réussies de ce texte : Gustave Doré en propose une vision dramatique sans précédent. Chez lui, tout concourt à la dramatisation du conte, depuis la mise en scène théâtrale du tableau jusqu'aux moindres détails qui génèrent un réalisme terrifiant grâce à la technique dite "du bois de teinte". Il utilise de l'encre de chine ou de la gouache, préalablement diluée comme le veut la technique du "lavis". Pour les contes de Perrault, les onze meilleurs graveurs de l'époque ont été mis à contribution pour graver au burin les quarante planches de bois : Pannemaker, Pisan, Pierdon, Maurand, Boetzel, Brevière, Hébert, Deschamps, Dumont, Delduc et Fagnon. Le travail de Gustave Doré dans le cadre de l'illustration des Contes est primordial ; il ne réduit pas la gravure à sa fonction ornementale mais la transforme en véritable objet de narration. Ces illustrations sont les oeuvres les plus célèbres de Doré et reçurent immédiatement des critiques enthousiastes, notamment celle de Sainte-Beuve dans Les Nouveaux lundis (23 décembre 1861) : "Un Perrault comme il n'y en eut jamais jusqu'ici et comme il ne s'en verra plus. (...)
