‎Milano - Milan: Edoardo Sonzogno 1868 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Early Italian editions of Gustave Dor�'s classic illustrated version of the Divine Comedy. The Inferno is found in its original folio format in a reprint from 1868 which is bound in the publisher's sand-grain purple cloth. There is gilt lettering to the faded spine some slight fraying at the top and bottom of the backstrip. Internally purple endpapers with an old crease to the free endpaper browning and some foxing to early leaves. The text is unmarked and complete with Dor�'s images in their largest and most striking format. Purgatorio and Paradiso appear together as first published in 1868 by Dor� in a single smaller volume the 'Edizione economica' of 1880; purple cloth and endpapers some rubbing to corners and extremities; toning to text with occasional foxing throughout. Dor� had to self-finance the first edition of the Inferno in 1861 but the publication was an immediate aesthetic and commercial success and translations adorned with his images soon appeared all over Europe such that it is sometimes difficult to envisage any but Dor�'s imaginings alongside Dante's text. In 1856 he produced 12 folio-size illustrations of The Legend of The Wandering Jew which propagated longstanding antisemitic views of the time The Wandering Jew is a mythical figure whose legend began to spread in Europe in the 13th century. The original legend concerns a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion and was then cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming. The exact nature of the wanderer's indiscretion varies in different versions of the tale as do aspects of his character; sometimes he is said to be a shoemaker or other tradesman while sometimes he is the doorman at Pontius Pilate's estate.
