BARTLETT, John Henry
The Bonus March and the New Deal
Chicago and New York: M.A. Donohue 1937. First Edition. original blue cloth with dust jacket. Excellent Dust Jacket Condition. First edition of this contemporary history of the Depression and the New Deal with 18 striking photographic illustrations from the era inscribed in the year of publication: "To my friend Gall—— with all good wishes John H. Bartlett. Dec 25-1937" in original dust jacket.

The Bonus March and the New Deal by John Henry Bartlett is a concise insightful examination of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Great Depression. Focusing on the 1932 Bonus March when thousands of World War I veterans descended on Washington D.C. demanding early payment of promised bonuses Bartlett explores the clash between protestors and government authority and its lasting political impact. The book traces how the violent dispersal of the veterans helped shape public opinion influenced Franklin D. Roosevelt’s rise to power and informed key elements of the New Deal. Blending political history with social analysis Bartlett presents a compelling account of how grassroots protest and federal policy collided at a pivotal moment in American history.
